I am not a hardcore reader by any means, so I am in shock that I read this book cover-to-cover in less than 24 hours. I am a fairly new addict to the game of disc golf but once I really started playing consistently last summer I have never looked back. My daily life is consumed by my passion for disc golf and how important it is to me. This author has such an incredible way of explaining vastly important outlooks that EVERY player needs to understand. I truly believe with the things I am learning in this book I will become a much better player. Patrick, thank you for such an awesome book, and outlook. I can't wait to start reading it again now, only this time I'll follow your instruction to read a chapter at a time and then go play! (Lol)Amazon, I heard through the grapevine that the author has a new book coming out soon. Please do everything you can to make this happen, and add me to your list of definite orders! :)

If you are serious about playing disc golf, this book is a must read. It's not a "how to" guide for the game itself, it's a guide for managing your thoughts and attitude on the course and in all aspects of your life.In disc golf and in life, it's difficult to stay focused on the present moment and to stay centered. This book walks you through a plethora of ideas that help you manage the game and life by teaching you to nourish your mind, body and spirit. It also helps you to be aware of both positive and negative thoughts that can and do affect you and how to overcome the negative, focusing instead on the positive.By reading this book a little at a time, it helped me to improve my game and my personal quest to be a better person. It is a constant struggle to stay focused, but book guides you in the right direction. Attitude is everything!

Having just picked up disc golf and becoming hooked about two months ago, I wanted to absorb as much about it as I could. I watched videos and read reviews for discs and listened to podcasts. Which is how I came across this book. This book captured everything that really drew me in to the sport. The reflection time that you have between your shots was such a draw for me, and Patrick puts this time to the most positive use. The ideas and philosophies that he lays out are meant to sharpen the mental blade in the game, but they seamlessly bleed into your everyday life.I am a fifth grade teacher, and as I was reading I was picturing all of these positive thoughts ending up on my walls of my classroom. Reading this book and listening to his podcast has inspired me to start a disc golf club in my school. In the book he speaks of three groups, the mentor, the peer, and the protege. And how the positivity that you spread to the protege comes back to you in great amounts. My goal is to pass these ideas on to the next generations of players.I really can't say enough good things about this book. Read it.

My son loves disc golf. He's played all kinds of sports and understands that your mental state certainly affects your playing. Ultimately, that's what sports is about; sure, there's skill and luck involved, but ultimately the athlete who masters his or her mind prevails. I read about this book and ordered it for him for a birthday present. He almost teared up when he opened it and said he'd been wanting it for forever and how did I know. I knew because of other good reviewers who post their reviews. Hope this one is helpful to you too.

I purchased this book because I wanted to read something about the subject of disc golf which has become a hobby that I very much enjoy. Know this: it's not a book on how to play the game or even throw a disc. It's not a book on Zen either. It's a book on mindfulness and using the disc golf course as an avenue towards mindfulness that can potentially spill over into your life in a positive way. I've read it an re-read it and I love it. The author does not claim to be an expert in the ideas he is presenting, but instead humbly offers up ways for you to see your games in a new light and take lessons from them that can apply to all aspects of your life. For this I'm grateful to him for his effort. I would recommend this to any disc golf fan that wants to deepen their experience with the game.

I've read a good deal of material on Zen and other various spiritual practices, but the concepts in Zen in the Art of Disc Golf have stuck with me more than any other book because I love disc golf and everything is introduced in a disc golf context. All of the concepts are then shown to apply to many other aspects of life beyond disc golf as well. It's written in a very practical tone so it's comfortable to read and is understandable. There is very little material involving the mental and spiritual game of disc golf, so it's great to have more available especially since this is quality and thoughtful work.

I read this in one night with a pink highlighter. The writer makes clear connections between disc golf and other aspects of life. A good opportunity for reflection. I did find myself chuckling at times when the writer's inner zen master came on a little strong: "Disc golf can become a mirror of yourself once you learn to step back and see that you are the game and the game is you." To his credit, the writer spends the rest of the book clarifying this idea in concrete and relatable terms. I'll definitely take his advice and read a chapter between rounds and use my time on the course to reflect on the spiritual and mental sides of my game.

I really like what this book has to say in reguards to the sport of Disc Golf and the power of positive thinking. Writen from the stand point of an "average Joe" Disc Golfer with a good grasp on spirital balance, this book is a must read to help elevate your mind, body, and spirit and drastic lower your scores on the course. I have used this book to aid in my enjoyment of the sport and to help clear my mind of the things that used to keep me up at night. Thank You Pat for sharing this with the world... Maybe your next book could be "Zen and the art of Mankind"... A practical guide to getting along with everyone else... Then we could all get some sleep!!!

Great book. Came handy as a reference source for a report I had to do of him in college. Great director and fan of his work!

I love the films by Francois Truffaut. I think he is probably one of the best directors of French NEW WAVE. That's why it is so interesting to get to know his own views on cinema.

Truffaut's Reviews, Book Introductions, and short program pieces. Buried inside are all of his approaches and attitudes, andeven a description of how the New Wave got up and running. I recently referenced this work extensively for a lecture on theNew Wave for a Gallery Retrospective. Going to the source is sometimes the best place to start.

A precious, enjoyable book from the director of "The 400 Blows". He was a fabulous storyteller, especially when he talked about his passion: the films in his life.

I read this entire book on a flight from London back to the U.S. When I got home, I rented/watched several of the movies mentioned by Truffaut (Rear Window, etc.) watching for the points he made. Many people don't know Truffaut was a journalist as well as a filmmaker. He was able to write as desriptively as his films were imaginative. My only complaint is that this is a book for serious film fans who have already seen the movies he reviews. If you haven't seen the films, his comments aren't referential enough to include you. But, that said, it will help you see many titles in a new way.

Nice book for anyone who enjoys film arts and particularly the French New Wave films.

Very interesting to see these reviews from Truffaut. Definitely worth checking out. His thoughts on some classic films are really priceless.

Great stuff

#96,400 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is a famous book, but “Bowling Alone” was not what I expected. What I expected was social commentary. What I got was social science, proving with reams of statistics what is now a commonplace, that social capital in America has eroded massively over the past several decades. Of course, that it’s a commonplace is due largely to this book, published in 2000 as a follow-up to a 1995 article, so that’s hardly a criticism of the book. But, paradoxically, it’s not clear that most readers nowadays will get much value, by itself, out of reading this very valuable book. That’s not to say readers can’t get much value out of this book. But to do so today, you have to evaluate the data it provides with frameworks it doesn’t provide. I found that reading this book while keeping in mind some of the insights provided by Yuval Levin’s recent “A Fractured Republic” helped me better understand the causes of the decline in social capital. In particular, Levin notes that after World War II, Americans have become increasingly individualistic, in a rebound effect from prior consolidation, which helps explain the trends Putnam documents.Putnam begins by convincingly demonstrating that the same pattern of erosion of social capital has occurred in nearly every area of American life. That pattern is, basically, an increase in participation (and resultant social capital) at the beginning of the 20th Century; an even greater increase in participation after World War II; and a precipitous fall-off from roughly 1970 through the 1990s. He demonstrates that this is true of all forms of political participation, civic participation, religious participation, workplace interactions, informal social connections, volunteering and philanthropy, and mutual trust. After proving this erosion to his, and the reader’s, satisfaction, Putnam tries to figure out why this has happened. He carefully parses various possibilities, from increased pressures for time and money, women entering the work force, suburbanization, TV and the Internet, generational change and others. He concludes there is no single culprit and each of these has some responsibility, although TV is the largest driver. Putnam considers only materialist drivers and does not consider philosophical shifts in American thought, probably because those would be difficult to capture in social science surveys (although it seems to me it could be done, by asking about opinions, rather than activities, while keeping in mind that such self-reporting is subject to all sorts of biases and inaccuracies).Putnam does an excellent job of sub-analyzing the data he presents. For example, he is careful to distinguish trends across generations from those occurring within generations (generally, intra-generational trends are swamped by inter-generational trends—in other words, it’s the younger generations in which social capital is actually eroding). He is also careful to note where the data is uncertain, and to avoid sweeping conclusions. And he makes interesting distinctions that are relevant to his arguments, such as between bridging social capital, that creates new connections among disparate people, and bonding social capital, that creates tighter social connections among people with something in common. Finally, Putnam optimistically lays out a program for restoring social capital, analogizing the current age to the late 19th Century Gilded Age and, among other things, citing Booth Tarkington’s laments about the decline of social capital in the early 20th Century as evidence, given the increase in social capital later in the 20th Century, that the pattern can be reversed. Putnam’s specific suggestions are not very detailed—they are couched as, for example, “Let us find ways to ensure that by 2010 significantly more Americans will participate in (not merely consume or ‘appreciate’) cultural activities from group dancing to songfests to community theater to rap festivals.” How this is to be done Putnam does not really say, other than to claim that “top-down versus bottom-up” is a false dichotomy—“the roles of national and local institutions in restoring American community need to be complementary.”But the problem here is that top-down actions have been a major cause of the problem of eroding social capital, and one that Putnam mostly ignores, since he assigns causal value exclusively to bottom-up causes. Long before Putnam, commentators noted that the growth of the Leviathan state was crowding out intermediary institutions of the type whose decline Putnam decries. In 1953, Robert Nisbet pointed this out, though he did it qualitatively, not with Putnam’s quantitative approach. Nisbet noted that as Leviathan grows, as it did from Progressive times on but most of all starting in the 1960s, intermediary institutions decay, since people seek meaning, and when they cannot obtain meaning on the local level, they will turn to national meaning, thus strengthening the central state (while obtaining only counterfeit meaning).Similarly, this year (2016), Yuval Levin (who extensively cites Putnam) noted that “As the national government grows more centralized, and takes over the work otherwise performed by mediating institutions—from families and communities to local governments and charities—individuals become increasingly atomized; and as individuals grow apart from one another, the need for centralized government provision seems to grow.” Moreover, “In liberating many individuals from oppressive social constraints, we have also estranged many from their families and unmoored them from their communities, work and faith. In accepting a profusion of options in every part of our lives to meet our particular needs and wants, we have also unraveled the institutions of an earlier era, and with it the public’s broader faith in institutions of all kinds.” Levin points both to the expansion of government and to a widespread acceptance of “expressive individualism” as causes for the erosion in social capital. These are the type of framework insights Putnam does not provide, and they suggest that government may be the problem, or a large part of it. That’s not to say that the national government is unable to help with the decline in social capital, but it is to say that its nature is not best suited to that role, and recognizing its culpability in the erosion of social capital is necessary to properly analyze the problem. Similarly, it’s important to recognize philosophical shifts in Americans themselves. In fact, at no point does Putnam assign blame to government action as a possible base cause for the national decline in social capital (although government actions, such as splitting Indianapolis with an interstate, do occasionally figure in anecdotes). The huge increase in government scope and power that began in the 1960s is exactly coterminous with the drop in social capital that Putnam documents. That, by itself, proves nothing. But it’s at least a coincidence that is worth addressing, and Putnam doesn’t. Government, in fact, figures nearly not at all in Putnam’s book, other than indirectly, with respect to individuals’ reduced civic engagement in the political process. In my mind, this blind spot is the biggest defect of Putnam’s book. That said, I am less convinced by a related frequent criticism of Putnam’s argument—that he ignores modern reasons why Americans might choose to be less politically involved, such as the perception both on the Left and the Right that the system is “rigged.” The supporters of Bernie Sanders point to the political power of the rich and connected; conservatives point to the federal government’s, and particularly the Supreme Court’s, seizing of power that used to be devolved to the local level, where individuals could have an impact. But if you think about it for a little while, those things may be true, and they may affect civic engagement in politics, but they say little about areas of social capital other than political involvement, such as religious involvement and workplace interaction. Therefore, this seems like a weak criticism, although attractive to those who view the world solely or largely through a political lens.Putnam has written books since this one, including a recent one on income immobility which seems like it might be very interesting. I’m curious if there is data from the past fifteen years on the trends that Putnam addresses. While “Bowling Alone” does have a website, most of the links in it don’t work, which is too bad. If he hasn’t already, it’d be great if Putnam updated some of his data from this book, and let us know if his analysis and conclusions have changed. For example, Putnam notes that non-privatized (i.e., public) religious belief is the single largest driver of social capital. How has the modern tendency away from religious belief, accelerating since 2000, affected social capital? And, of course, this book was written before the rise of social media (although Putnam does discuss Internet social activity in some detail, as it existed when the book was written, including its impact on reducing constraints of simultaneous timing on communication, and the “poverty of social cues” in Internet communication). How has the utter dominance of Facebook and similar media affected social capital? These, and many similar questions, would be worth answering. So, while Putnam’s conclusions have, I think, been very valuable for society, I’m not sure that actually reading this book is necessary or valuable for most people. But if you are very interested in the topic, and read this in conjunction with other works, it may well be worth your time, even today.

Putnam’s study will tell you more than you may wish to know about how Americans spend their time in an effort to answer the question of where has the civic soul gone. As he notes: “Community has warred incessantly with individualism for preeminence in our political hagiology…. The dominant theme is simple: For the first two-thirds of the twentieth century a powerful tide bore Americans into ever deeper engagement in the life of their communities, but a few decades ago— silently, without warning— that tide reversed and we were overtaken by a treacherous rip current. Without at first noticing, we have been pulled apart from one another and from our communities over the last third of the century.” (p.27)Bowling Along describes this shift and makes efforts to offer the reasons why, one of the heaviest being the arrival and dispersion of Television. He states: “I need to make clear at the outset that I have not entirely solved the mystery, so I invite your help in sifting clues.”Putnam does not delve into the politics of the era only that the citizen has become detached from the sense of participation. This review offers another explanation, following the wisdom and publications of Sheldon S. Wolin a political philosopher who describes the same process in a very different manner. Part of the change is in style of presentation. Putnam’s approach is under the sway of the behavioralist revolution, which emphasized the quantitative analysis of data rather than political ideas as a way to explain political behavior, in his case “SOCIAL CAPITAL”.Wolin sees the same shifting from communal involvement to individualism and a following drop in the role of active government beginning in the 1970’s, but this was an engineered change with its roots in the formation of a small group, the Mont Pelerin Society (named after the Swiss spa where they first met) in 1947, with Friedrich von Hayek, Ludvig von Mises, and the economist Milton Friedman as recognized contributors. They felt the world was headed toward a centralized highly managed regulated existence threading Freedom and Individual Rights as they saw it.In America this was the Post-Depression, Post-War, FDR creation with Keynesian anti-cyclical intervention, anti-trust and social overhead dimensions, characterized today as our period of ‘Welfare Liberalism,’ all features they hoped to destroy. (Putnam handles this period as one of extensive interpersonal relationships.)Those believes had been sold by individuals like Lewis F. Powell Jr. who in 1971 issued a call to the US Chamber of Commerce, and other conservative organizations and think-tanks such asThe Business Roundtable, The Heritage Foundation, The Cato Institution, Accuracy in Academia and the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research to counter criticism of the free enterprise system. At the University of Chicago Milton Freedom was spreading the word. Powell was to be appointed to the Supreme Court by President Nixon. A formidable array of power and influence.David Harvey in A Brief History of Neoliberalism details their impacts and views it as ‘Class Action’ a dangerous tack for an academic but now in 2018 when “1%ters” has entered the common vocabulary likely raises few eyebrows. It is a long shot from Reagan’s ‘Government is not the solution but the problem’ to the neoliberal existence prevalent today, the point is just that Putnam’s Bowling Alone concerns may have very different causes and therefore very different solutions. The book is very complete but tedious and Wolin’s thesis of “Democracy Incorporated” definitely seems more relevant. Sheldon S. Wolin was professor Political Science Berkeley and Princeton, Robert D. Putnam was Dena of the Harvard Kennedy School of Government.Perhaps the Millianians generation can put us back together someday, that would please both.3 star

Bowling Alone has risen to the status of "classic" in rather few years to attain that distinction. Putnam saw -- and understood -- things happening in American culture that, when he wrote it, no one else seemed to have focused on. Sure, people would write articles in the popular press about how lodges were going under for lack of members, and community activities seemed to have become a thing of the past, but no one had pulled it together into a comprehensive -- and very readable -- analysis and, as far as I can tell, absolutely nailed it.I see this book cited continually in articles and books in a wide variety of fields that attempt to understand contemporary America. As I watch the Trump phenomenon unfolding, I am wondering when someone will astutely draw the connection between the phenomena Putnam analyzes and the current political scene. It's a classic, and you need to read it if you have not.

I’ve always enjoyed watching Dancing With the Stars, and Derek and Julianne Hough have been my favorite dancers, so when I saw this book listed on Book Bub I purchased it. Derek recounts his childhood growing up in Utah, the only son in a family of 5 children. He started taking dancing lessons where his sisters went, and soon found his lifelong passion. When he was 11 he was invited to live in England with Mark Ballas and his parents, Shirley and Corky, where he went to school, continued with dance lessons and competed in ballroom dancing competitions, winning many trophies. He has also been a singer and actor and was the lead in the play Footloose in England; an interesting parallel is his sister Julianne played the lead in the remake of the movie Footloose. Derek is a multitalented performer as well as choreographer who excels in whatever he undertakes.

As soon as I started to read the sample, I was hooked! What a wonderful surprise to find out that Derek is not only an amazing dancer & choreographer ... he's quite an entertaining author as well! I literally read this book from cover to cover in a couple of hours. I couldn't put it down. I enjoyed the writing style & loved being able to discover what makes Derek tick. For such a young man, Derek clearly has his head together. He is a positive role model in so many ways. He is passionate & driven yet remains humble, patient, empathetic & kind. I know I speak for many of the DWTS audience when I say I think he's special but now I have even more respect & admiration for his many talents & accomplishments. This book is a truly delightful & entertaining read! If you are a fan of DWTS, you will absolutely love this book! :)

I just finished this amazing, very inspirational book by the incredible (and very handsome) Derek Hough! He talks of his life growing up, being bullied, competition dancing, growing as a person , and working with his dwts partners... but there's so much more then all that! I wanted to read this because I think Derek is amazing and I wanted to know more about him. You definitely know what makes him tick after reading all of it. He also writes Life Lessons after each chapter. You can tell he has it altogether and really knows how to work at life and make things positive! After that at the and of each chapter, ppl he either worked with or knows, write a lil about how they feel about Derek and what they learned from him. Reading this gives you a motivation boost! I highlighted a lot in this kindle addition, and I don't ever do that with books I read in the app, or books in general for that matter. I'd recommend this to anyone! I really loved it! Oh and the photos at the end of the book were fun :-) its him as a kid, some dance partners back then, his sisters and parents, and him closer to now. I also loved the Q&A at the very end of the book. They're all questions he is frequently asked. I can't say anything bad about this! It was great!

I did not know what to expect from one so young writing about his dancing life but this is a wonderful book written by a man who left nothing out. His trials & tribulations & the first time he told of how badly he had been bullied. His parents never knew but he was determined to make his life a positive & in my opinion he he can give those bullies a broad grin of "try it now"His book is more like a much older person wrote it as he is so driven even people twice his age do not have it. I never watched DWTS from the start but the first time I saw him I knew here again is a great entertainer. I expected him to just touch on his dancing but he told all...even his bad problems & even ends up doing some singing. He deserved every mirror ball he has and should get more. When I watched the Emmys when they announced the choreographers it happened so fast even Derek was shocked & I actually jumped up & down clapping & hollering I was so happy. By the way, jumping up and down isn't that safe at this time of my life but only would I have done it for Derek. He always emphasis turning the difficult into the easy. His personality is right out there and oh wouldn't I be happy to have one waltz with him...but a good old waltz of years ago not all the jumping around. Boy that would make my life complete. Do get this book & you will never be sorry...it is outstanding. There is so much more you will learn about Derek and I do not want to give it all away.

Derek Hough is an extremely talented person - I've watched him every season on DWTS as well as seen him in the DWTS live shows and in the Move tour. His dancing is mesmerizing to watch and his love of life is evident in all he does. He takes you on a journey through his life's experiences in his book, allowing you enough detail to feel like you actually know at least a part of what makes him tick and his life lessons are both attainable and inspiring. Derek Hough will continue to excel in all he does because he believes in himself! His honesty and positive approach to life are a breath of fresh air in a world of negativity.

I enjoy watching Dancing With The Stars where I first met this talented young man. I have admired his performance skills and his creative skills. I have always been curious about his background and family. I learned so much. Like many well trained Olympic athletes he did not live at home much of his life. He and his sister spent much of life with another family and spent grueling hours from the time he was a small boy dancing and dancing. He talks about his family life as a young child and the love he had from his parents. There is humor and sadness in his family, but it seems he was the one who pushed himself to become one of the world's greatest ballroom dancers in the world. The style of writing is very well done because he draws you in to understand how the family and his goals, as well as teachers of dance, developed his character. I was not let down in learning his life lessons and admire how much more remarkable his character is and what wonderful goals he set for himself as a person along his journey. He passes all those on in his book for the reader to see what is important in life and how he has tried to pass it all along.

Deep and Wide: Creating Churches Unchurched People Love to Attend is a great site map of the birth and development of the Northpoint Church in Atlanta, Georga. Andy Stanley opens the journal of his early years in ministry giving a glimps of the troubles and thrills of developing a new location for His father's church, the First Baptist Church of Atlanta. While the plan was clear to open a new campus, God took control as like-minded Christ followers prayerfully focused on developing a dynamic church for the "Unchurched" where people love to come. It is an amazing story and the mission, vision and strategies employed gives church leaders much to think about in the evaluation of their churches' effectiveness in these times. Andy Stanley does a masterful job of opening his heart and soul to church leaders with no claims to developing a master template for all churches. However, it fills the reader excitement and some trepidation to change to a model far more like the "Early Church" than churches of our modern day.

I have no idea why I was drawn to read this book. I am not a pastor, worship leader or in any way involved in church leadership. I am not even a member of the church I attend. What I AM is a new Christian, a fan of Andy Stanley’s who listens to his podcasts and an information seeker. I’m adding this review for the benefit of church leaders who might be reading it and here’s what I want to tell you as a previously (and long time) unchurched nonbeliever: Andy has got it right. As a new believer, I read the entire book crying, YES!If you are leading a church for churched people, you are going to have a hard, if not impossible time, appealing to "everybody else". If your goal is to lead a church for churched believers, then by all means: continue to do what you’re doing and how you do it. But if you want to draw people into the story of Jesus, if you REALLY want to draw the unchurched in and change lives, then read this book and follow Andy’s lead. He is onto something, and it’s brilliant and magical and you WILL bring people into the church and into a relationship with Jesus. And really, isn’t that what church is supposed to be about?

Week before last I attended a Chick-fil-a Leadercast in my area. Andy Stanley was the first speaker on the docket. As always, he was engaging, humorous and motivational. He is a tremendous communicator. I have watched video from his services at North Point a few times and am always impressed by his ability to hold an audience captive to what he's saying. Despite that, I have been bothered by his approach and the content of his church services--not enough to try and figure out why, just enough to know that his model isn't one I would want to emulate. But during the Leadercast, everything about Andy Stanley's ministry became clear when he shared his vision for North Point Ministries. "Creating Churches Unchurched People Love to Attend." That explained everything. I disagree with his premise. That was what caused my antipathy toward his ministries. But though I disagree with his premise, it amazes me how all aspects of his ministry are laser-like focused on their vision. They know who they are, why they do what they do, and how they're going to accomplish it. That laser-like focus is something all churches can learn from--whether we agree with Stanley's foundational premise or not. That brought me to Andy Stanley's book Deep& Wide: Creating Churches Unchurched People Love to Attend. If you have a good understanding of what you believe God is calling your church to be (hopefully based on a biblical understanding of ecclesiology), then I commend this book to you. If you know who you are, you will be able to eat the fish without swallowing the bones. And there is some great fish among the bones in this book. It is divided into five sections, the first of which is somewhat biographical. If you bought the book to satisfy your prurient desire to know the "dirt" about the split between Andy and his father, you will be mildly disappointed. He quickly and graciously covers the difficult time, but quickly moves on to the heart of the book. One thing I did find disturbing was the fact that Stanley never felt called to the ministry. Instead, he asked his dad if it was okay to "volunteer", which is what he did. Spit out the bones. Enjoy the fish. The second section of the book is full of bones--almost like trying to eat carp. I was close to putting the book down at that point, but was still intrigued at how Stanley is able to maintain such laser-like focus on his vision. So I pressed on. Thankfully, there was more fish in sections three through five. Those sections contain some wonderfully insightful tips on human nature, communication dynamics, pursuing excellence and leading change. Those tips alone made me glad I kept reading. For those who have been steeped in biblical ecclesiology and whose shelves are lined with 9Marks materials and the like, read this book. Enjoy it. You will have the discernment to recognize the bones and spit them out as necessary. The fish will help you see things from a different perspective. For everyone else, build your solid foundation first--understand the biblical purpose and mission of the local church. Then read this book.Understand that my differences with North Point Ministries stem from disagreeing with Andy Stanley's premise. But with a biblical ecclesiology in place, we can learn from him how to be laser-focused on a biblical mission and vision for the local church.Hardcover: 352 pagesPublisher: Zondervan (September 25, 2012)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 0310494842

A great book for anyone who wants to understand church environment (how they work, their goals and community outreach) and receive healing from their own church experiences. I did..In fact if I could afford it and receive a job in Atlanta, I would move in a heartbeat to attend North Point Ministries. This book is answered to prayers as i miss church yet couldn't find one where I was comfortable..didn't realize I needed a "non traditional" church where it doesn't matter your background..I love the fact "unbelievers" and "believers" can work side by side in Andy Stanley church. I love Andy sense of humor and doesn't hold back, yet also let you know of his fails and successes..don't know too many pastors who admit their failures...highly recommend ....

Excellent book on strategic thinking for church leaders by Andy Stanley, the founding pastor of one of the largest and most influential churches in the country. Andy Stanley is a very strategic thinker who walks the reader through the challenges the leaders of his church identified and the solutions they adopted to accomplish their goals. They focus on the people they would like to reach with the Gospel message and figure out how to intentionally give them a great experience so they will want to keep coming back. The challenges are common to any church, but the solutions may differ. It just needs to be well thought out and intentional.

AfterThe Untamed Bride (Black Cobra Quartet) and the rest of the quartet (which I borrowed at the library) I was done with this author. But I got hooked with this one with a teaser chapter after the short story in Royal Bridesmaids: An Original Anthology. I wasn't disappointed. On the contrary, I enjoyed the novel a lot. I liked the lengthy story, most of the filler others have complained about being love scenes. I can name few other romantic novels were so many were described. There is also a lot of introspection by the main characters, but they are likeable and attractive enough that you want to know their mental rambling. It is not the kind of book you can't put down, but more a guilty pleasure you can look forward at the end of the day. For someone with time to read it all at once I can imagine it must turn too repetitive. If you liked the author may I recommend Devil's Bride (Cynster Novels) one of my all time favorite and a good introduction to her "world".

THE LADY RISKS ALL is the story of Neville Roscoe the mysterious owner of clubs and gaming hells in London. Readers of Laurens' other books will recall Roscoe from THE EDGE OF DESIRE and THE RECKLESS BRIDE. Roscoe lives outside society. We quickly learn that Roscoe was born into an aristocratic family but made the decision to live on the outside. One night a woman, Miranda Clifford barges into his house in order to rescue her younger brother from Roscoe's clutches. Miranda is twenty-nine and has spent her life living beyond reproach in order to make up for her family that made its money in trade and also for women in her family that have acted scandalously. Roscoe and Miranda have soon joined forces to save her brother and family.Briscoe is a complicated character because while he does good, he has put himself outside of the society that most historical romances focus upon. He is direct and at times brutal while he is also a man who had given up his future and cares for others. Perhaps because Laurens cannot rely on stereotypes of tonnish gentleman, she has created a multidimensional hero.Miranda is a woman who grows in this book. She has to change in order to be the wool man for Roscoe. I especially liked that Miranda ultimately decides that she must reach our and take what she wants from life and not merely allow things to happen to her. She and Roscoe are similar in fundamental ways which allow them to more closer together and ultimately have a happy ending.I've read a lot of Stephanie Laurens and this book felt fresher even though it follows a similar plot of there being a mystery that bring the couple together to resolve. Finally, for fans of the Bastion Club and the Black Cobra Quartet, there are some cameos by Rafe Carstairs, Christian Allardyce and Wolverstone. These appearances are brief and there is nothing missing for those who have not read the previous books.I absolutely loved this book. I especially liked the fact that there are no magic solutions for the characters in this book. I had expected that the romance would be resolved in a more conventional fashion than it was. Instead, the resolution was true to the characters and was deeply satisfying because of it.

Is this the Stephanie Laurens that wrote the Cynster Series? It almost seemed as though someone else was doing the writing. For me to sit down and write a review, I have to be full of sentimental warmth, frustrated beyond belief, or stirred up and not easily calmed down. This book frustrated me pure and simple. The premise of an aristocrat leaving his life behind and working to turn a gaming empire into a business to support the ducal family household and enterprises was very interesting so I had great hopes for the story. I kept reading and reading and giving this book a chance. However, it never took off for me. The endless descriptions of the encounters of the two lovers, Roscoe/Julian and Miranda left me skimming over those parts and thinking - enough already!Another thing that I heartily disliked was reading Miranda's thoughts expressed over and over about how she was assessing her life and how she would go on. Again - enough already. She is one of my least favorite heroines. Aside from physical, this book had very little relationship building - not enough to lay a foundation for warmth and love.In Kindle pages, this book was over 8,000 pages long which would have been great if the story had remotely held my interest. The typical number of Kindle pages in most of the Regency Romance novels that I read are between 4,500 - 6,500 pages. I rarely pay more than $4.99 for a Kindle book. I really regret buying this one. I know that most reviewers gave this a 4 to 5 star rating so I know I'm in the minority.I will finish by saying that I have greatly enjoyed most of Ms. Laurens' books.

One of my favorites by this author! Yes it is long and probably could have condensed but truly these two were so complex that the length was justified. Roscoe or Lord Julian gave up so much he could never get back and when faced with the chance to regain it refused out of loyalty to the ones who had provided the means to save his family. Even sacrificing his chance at happiness and a family with the woman he loved. What a woman. No simpering miss here. Miranda was a joy. Her loyalty to her brother was unending, without her he would of have a much different ending. Her determination to go after what she wanted and only what she wanted in the face of disappointing her Aunt Gladys who had drilled respectability into her until my head hurt was beautiful. She made her own happy ending after much thought. She truly weighed the pros and cons gathered her courage and made her happy ending. Bravo Miranda!

What a charming and at the same time very practical book. Nothing really new for anyone who has made this transition as I have, but seeing the organisation of thoughts, useful tables and checklists in print makes me remember just how complicated this process can be. I can recognize many of the steps they had to take and verify that anyone contemplating a similar move is well served by emulating their example.Shawna's whimsical asides and droll humour adds life to what could have been a dry text book.Steve Friedman

Thank you Shawna! I feel renewed energy to get my dream of living abroad moving again! Your comments/recommendations for making all the lists and setting goals have inspired me out of the complacency that has plagued me. I especially liked reading about how you downsized and got your possessions organized for the move-probably one of the biggest things holding me back after 47 years of collecting crap. Thanks again! Hope to share a Mango with you some day...soon-JWhitley

Written with such wisdom, compassion and humor. It is a must read for anyone thinking of relocating to a different country as well as a great read for all of us dreamers. The best ex-pat story I've ever read. Completely entertaining as well as detailed on "how to do it". This is a can't- put-it- down page turner for everyone.

This story is both informative and fun to read. Shawna made me laugh a few times with her easy going sense of humor! The information is real, honest, and very inspiring! Lots of important points to consider when you are considering moving to another country...the Morris's break it all down into manageable steps!!

Great read from first to last page. Read it straight through. Good suggestions and explanations. Recommend the book not only to those thinking of moving out of North America or Europe to start a life in Costa Rica, but to those wishing to explore the country for an extended period of time in order to restore or reset their inner self. I think it is great that the author(s) are available for consultation.

Nicely done. Good info and advice for those considering a move like this. And they also assist others in all aspects of the move and provide their website. Good marketing via the book. Enjoyed the humor.

good primer for the move and an easy read!

Great information for families planning to move across the state or out of the country, not just Costa Rica. Full of many useful tid-bits to make the transition easier. Written with wit and a sense of humor, this is an easy read!

The Upside of Down: Catastrophe, Creativity, and the Renewal of Civilization

From Publishers Weekly

With easy-to-understand terminology and a mountain of research, Toronto author Homer-Dixon (The Ingenuity Gap) faces down imminent, unavoidable and catastrophic threats to modern civilization, keeping a wary eye on mankind's chances to adapt. Methodically illustrating how the modern world is doomed to suffer a large-scale breakdown, Homer-Dixon enumerates the "tectonic stresses" on civilization-population growth disparities, energy scarcity, environmental damage, and economic instabilities-and the "multipliers"-increasing global connectivity and small groups' ability to enact destruction-that help propel them. Woven throughout are well-illustrated comparisons between the current state of industrialized nations-especially the U.S.-with the unsustainable complexities, and subsequent downfall, of the Roman Empire. With each page, humanity's situation seems more dire, but Homer-Dixon argues that the force of "catagenesis"-the "commonplace occurrence of renewal through breakdown"-means that good will come from the collapse of civilization as we know it. Unfortunately, he offers few practical suggestions as to how we can prepare for civilization's inevitable failure, and little evidence on which to hang hope. As a result, the book takes on a tone of doomsday prophecy directly at odds with its title. Where Homer-Dixon succeeds admirably is in explaining exactly why modern stresses are so worrisome and the outcomes that neglect could cause.Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. Even though this book was written in 2006 it still seems quite relevant to me. It's not that we don't know all the bad news in the world; it's just that it has not been laid out in such a devastatingly organized way as Canadian Homer-Dixon does. The five major stresses where he expects breakdown to occur are: population, energy, environment, climate, and economic. Most of these spring from our troubled relationship with nature, which public leaders are doing little to change. He spends a chapter on each of these stresses and lays out in gory detail how catastrophe can come about. (This is not a book for the faint-hearted.) But surprisingly, his book, as you see from the title, is hopeful. His point is to help us recognize the signs, prepare for breakdown, and "exploit the opportunities." He believes that, even though breakdown can hurt many people, it can also shatter the forces standing in the way of change. One thing that appears certain: constant change and surprise are now inevitable. The first step toward a creative response is to move from denial that it will happen. When we deny our problems, we can't choose our future. And our future lies in the creative renewal of every aspect of our lives in the aftermath of breakdown. Homer-Dixon's advice is that we do four things, which he describes in detail: 1) reduce the force of the 5 stresses to lower the risk of synchronous failure, 2) cultivate a prospective mind that can cope better with surprise, 3) boost the overall resilience of our energy, food supply, and other networks, and 4) prepare to turn breakdown to our advantage when it happens. Key to all this is building communities of like-minded people who can work together and are bound by trust.

Interesting career memoir of an entrepreneur and former Greenpeace leader, that helps provide a sense of what's at stake in climate change, and how diverse are the contributors and processes.I have one big objection to the prediction that we will overcome climate change. The author continually turns to the analogy of WWII as a time when whole societies sacrificed for the common good, uniting across even across national boundaries. Selflessness will save us from climate change when, somehow magically, we finally all understand, and the "dam of denial" bursts. All the necessary changes will still be possible. How is this magic supposed to happen? No one one knows, but it must, because otherwise we're doomed, and we can't be doomed.A much better analogy would be the Great Depression, when the Dust Bowl helped trigger financial collapse, and societies around the world were simply unable to cope. The situation deteriorated into WWII, at which point extreme resource exploitation (e.g., the East Texas Oilfield) allowed the U.S., with the assistance of the UK, to cut off German and Japanese access to Middle Eastern and South East Asian oilfields, and win the war. Not the only factors, but critical. Now fire, famine, flood, drought & storm again weaken societies that can't cope. Wars deluge Europe with immigrants. More of this is on the way. Resources around the world are stretched thin by a population approaching 10 billion. Maybe there's a technology miracle coming we haven't foreseen. Maybe not. Civilizations have collapsed before.

As I read this book I was reminded of Paul Kennedy's 1993 book "Preparing for the 21st Century." Like Kennedy and other authors in recent decades, Homer-Dixon assesses major global problems and trends with an eye toward how such stresses have converged throughout human history to cause breakdown or collapse of whole societies. The "tectonic stresses" he identifies are: Population stress (megacities; differing rich/poor growth rates) Energy stress (especially from scarcity of oil) Environmental stress (land, water, forests, fisheries) Climate stress (atmosphere) Economic stress (instability; widening income gaps)None of this is surprising, having been identified elsewhere in the literature at least as far back as the 1972 study "Limits to Growth" by the Club of Rome. But the author eloquently lays out the scenarios, makes historical analogies, and explains the interplay between the stresses in language that concerned citizens, and even policy-makers, can understand. This in itself is a great service to the reader.Like Kennedy, Homer-Dixon will be criticized for not sufficiently addressing solutions to these problems. Indeed, the "upside" in his title doesn't really manifest itself until about the last 50 pages of the book, and some readers may find what's offered to be inadequate. His solutions should be common sense (which can be uncommon in complex societies): design for resilience, be prepared to make the best of change. His belief that endless economic growth is overrated and even detrimental will not please everyone. And part of his argument is that collapse is probably inevitable, so we should strive to emerge from the disaster as good or better than we were before. Not the most encouraging pep talk - try not to think about your children and grandchildren when you read this. The author seems to be anticipating that some kind of breakdown having ripple effects across the world will occur somewhere between a few years from now and mid-century. Energy, which he calls "our master resource," seems to be his favorite choice as the primary culprit, which makes sense from today's perspective.I selected this book because for the past few years, I've been trying to absorb as much wisdom as possible about the globalization phenomenon. The book definitely comes down on the skeptical side of what the author calls "globalized capitalism." Of the books I've read on this side of the argument, this one is probably the most balanced, well-written, and non-accusatory. If you can handle depressing news, and you care about what direction the globalization era will take in the next few decades, this is a very worthwhile read.

This book is a very good introduction to vulnerabilities of our complex society. There are many challenges ahead of us from peak oil to climate change. Homer-Dixon's message is that the complex society we have build is prone to collapse if we don't act wisely. This book is even more timely nowadays than it was when it was written.

A key point: "in any complex adaptive system, breakdown, if limited, can be a key part of that system's long-term resilience and renewal."
