#15,249 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I just took BIO 180 at the University of Washington for which this book was required. I have to say that although this was an expensive book, it is more than worth the money dropped. You can use it for all of the introductory Biology courses (180, 200, 220) and it's also a great book for satisfying personal curiosities about other topics in biology. The best part about this book is that it is impeccably organized and thorough. You will not get lost in dry, confusing blocks of text and there are chapter summaries which are great to include in your notes. I used the book extensively for the course that I took. As I continue through the series I will definitely hold onto this book. One quick note: the study guide is virtually a repetition of the chapter summaries and was not that helpful, so don't waste money on that. :o)

The book did not come as advertised, there was no eText Access Card included and now I have to buy one for 66$ from the textbook site. Do not buy if you expect to receive an access card because it wont come with the book.

This is a very good biology textbook. It reads easily and presents the material in a clear, organized manner. The MasteringBiology online quizzes and interactive exercises that accompany this book are unquestionably the most useful online learning tools that I've ever used. They are far more helpful than any online learning tools that I used in the course of three calculus classes, two physics classes, or four chemistry classes. If you are assigned this text, do yourself a favor and actually read it. You will learn. And make it a point to use the online tools that come with it. They WILL aid in your mastery of the material and improve your grades on your exams.

This textbook served as an excellent supplement to my biology professor's lectures. Although I was fortunate to have a great biology professor who loves teaching, certain concepts need to be thoroughly studied by oneself in order to actually understand them. This book had excellent explanations in a readable font and very colorful pictures and diagrams that served as alternate explanations for difficult subjects. I also appreciated the inclusion of a small chapter summary and review at the end of each chapter to reinforce difficult concepts. Overall, this was a very useful textbook and it actually made bland subjects very interesting.

I was suppose to buy a newer edition of this book for one of my collage classes, but this one is only different buy a few page numbers the rest of the information is the same. Buying the saved over 100 dollars getting this edition. Never buy a newer edition if you can avoid it because you save a ton of money. You will do a little bit of looking if you our trying to find something but it isn't that hard. buy this edition and go and spend the money you save on something you would like you will fill so much better at the end of the day.

I've only been using this book for 2 weeks and I already enjoy it, which is a big thing to say for a textbook. The last general bio book I had was full of information that drowned out the overall point each section within the chapter was trying to bring. It was full of biochem and technical talk that wasn't needed for this level of class.Freeman's book brings a refreshing approach to writing about biology. Each chapter and section within each chapter, provides the student with the "meat and bones" of what they need to know. It's not hard to comprehend the take home message and to see how each little component adds up to make a larger component. This book has made me love biology again and understand why I returned to school. Good job Scott Freeman!

Great book. Really enjoyed it. For a science textbook, it's not that "word-y." I actually had the Professor who is the author, and how he teaches is kind of like what this book does: it seeks to clarify, not muddle; brevity and concise for maximum understanding. Also has great illustrations. I wouldn't completely rely on only this textbook to learn everything about Biology, but this is a great start. Also for future UW students: No, I did not have to buy MasteringBiology. That was completely optional. Clickers were more important than MasteringBiology. MasteringBiology is not Alex/Connect Plus.

Um the current version of this text book is like $300. So thank you for saving me basically an entire car payment. Text book companies are evil, and I am a broke first generation college student. Thank you for not being evil. Now I know what a phospholipid bilayer is and can throw it into conversation at dinner with my parents so they know maybe college isn’t a total money pit.

#271,271 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I teach in an urban setting and frequently hand this to students who don't have or want to do work during study hall. They are AMAZED at what they call "white people rules." As they go out into the work world, it gives them an excellent understanding of what many might consider "normal" behavior and gives them access to the unwritten rules of proper social behaviors.

This was originally a gag gift for my younger brother, who has always been a troublemaker. But I skimmed through it and I believe it will be a valuable read! It has some very useful info on manners surrounding things you don't often think about. I think in some cases it's a good read for anyone, gentleman or lady.

My nephew was in dire need of guidance on how to be a gentleman, as he only has poor male role models in his life. I hope he takes the information to heart.

Good Tips, mostly practical, but I would have liked to see some more depth. At times, it felt a bit like you could find most of what's written here on the web and some info, like how to dress for a king or a president, seems nearly irrelevant unless you're working in diplomatic relations or some high post in the government, which most people are not.

Well, the question is this. Are manners still in style? Personally, I think that they are and that every young man (junior high and older) needs to read this book. Apparently, my son (who I gave it to 15 years ago) and my nephew (who I gave it to this year) disagree and were really not that concerned about the social graces. But perhaps I was vindicated when the real world of business and jobs came on the scene and my son was asking all the questions that this book answers. Fortunately, he had this book (and me) to solve his social and etiquette dilemmas and has launched a successful career. But a lot of stress and panic could have been avoided with the use and reading of this book. Good manners will always be in style and every young man should have and use this book. It is an excellent gift for high school or (better late than never) college graduation and will be the key to climbing the ladder of success in both social and business life.

Great book. Should be required reading for all men. Manners have all but disappeared and this book helps a guy stay on track and keep himself sitting high in a crazy world. Thank you.

Every PARENT should have this available for their young men. Some men would do well to read this book to learn common courtesy. There is a Ladies version also. I've seen some women who could use that book, immediately. Our younger generation seems to be lacking is social skills. If they don't know they are ignorant they can't change it. There are other books to compliment this selection. The book isn't but about a half inch thick and is easy reading. Get one just for the heck of it.

Just like any other well-meaning book merely devised as a guide instead of absolute gospel, Bridge's little opus sticks to the point and belays the details.Every single piece of advice and every single rule are valuable things to take heart. It's simple and quick, telling you what to do and/or how to do it yet seldom, if ever, explaining why. The whys and why-nots are basically all just common sense deductions anyway. It took me one night to go through every word. Now I can just keep it on hand for future reference. As a few other reviewers have mentioned, some of the entries are "take it or leave it," meaning don't follow whatever nuggets of knowledge you don't like. None of it is brain surgery anyway - but nice little reminders on how to do the right things are keys to following the straight and narrow roads hard travelled.

Okay, so when this book was recommended to me, I'll admit I was apprehensive. Huge mistake. I'm a huge reader, and it's hard for me to take longer than 1 week to read a book. So, you can imagine how hard it is to pick a FAVORITE. Not in this case. The notebook is one of my favourite books of all time. You feel transported into this magical world as Noah reads his journal to his dear wife to try to get her to remember him (I won't give any spoilers). As a writer myself, Nicolas Sparks has given me skills and tools I never knew before. All in all, you really should read this book if you are looking for a good romance that keeps you on edge.I would recommend this book for ages 13 and up, for there are some scenes which may not be sutible for younger children. Also, this book was made into an amazing movie. On a side note, if you enjoy this book, continue the story by reading The Wedding, the fabulous sequel to The Notebook.

I watched "Great American Reads" this week and one section was dedicated to this book, which everyone who read it absolutely loved. I knew it was about a woman with Alzheimer's and obviously that intrigued me. I was also looking for another quick read, still recovering from the Kavanaugh debacle. So I ordered it and finished it in one sitting.I don't know what to say about this book. It's a lovely love story--the kind of forever after love that everyone hopes to have, fraught with first love, heartbreak, and reuniting, but tinged with the tragedy of Alzheimer's. My problem is that the Alzheimer's just didn't ring true. I know everyone is different but Allie, who suffers from Alzheimer's after nearly 50 years of marriage, seems not to be able to recognize the love of her life, but accepts him as a new friend and their story is fresh whenever he tells it...but though she does not know his name or who he is, she has lost none of the ability to speak eloquently and that is SO contrary to what I am experiencing with my mother that I just couldn't believe that part of it. The letter she writes to Noah as they are about to enter a senior facility, knowing that her symptoms will inevitably become worse, was so perfect that it could not possibly have been written by someone whose Alzheimer's had progressed to the point of needing to move to a facility.

I wanted to read a romance. And The Notebook, a romantic novella so famous it is an Internet meme for romance and gender politics, was 1.99 on Kindle. There’s a lot to like about The Notebook. It portrays a universe that we don’t actually live in, a faith, a worldview, a set of beliefs—and you can let yourself believe it for a while. It declares that nostalgia, cliche, and life lived as a summary, with a soft lens filter, is the best kind of life.I don’t agree. I think life is actually much, much better than how it is depicted in The Notebook. Life is far more vibrant, with hot sauce and meaningless moments and the prickle of seal whiskers. The Notebook universe only has room for summary, cliche, and edges so rounded they aren’t edges anymore. There are no scenes in the Notebook, just a series of memories.Still, I read the whole thing, and cried at least once. So there you go. If you want to sing and pray in that church, you can. You don’t have to be a believer. It’s available.

I liked the book as much as the movie it gave more vivid details of their story how they found out about Allie’s illness and touched a bit on the children they had. It almost made you want more information like their was a true history behind the characters like they were real life people. I am about to read The Wedding and hope that I find it just as intriguing. Nicholas Sparks is a fantastic writer and I was sad to hear that there will not be anymore screen adaptations of his novels .

In so many ways this is my parents life. My Mom had Alzheimer's Disease and had to be put in a Nursing Home, but my Dad lives with my sister and he went to the Nursing Home every night for the past 11 years. He would spend time with her, feed her ice cream, help to bathe her and get her ready for bed. He would cover her in a quilt and whisper sweet somethings to her, told her he loved her, said goodnight and God Bless you. On November 8th, 2013, she passed away. The day of her Service before they closed the casket, my Dad tucked her in one last time. They both were 90 years old and both never dated anyone but each other. What an inspiration, honourable, devoted and loving parents we have. NICHOLAS SPARKS this book is phenomenal!!! Breathtaking story!

The first half is readable, lovely setting, predictable but satisfying. I had to skim the last half. It was too sappy and about as exciting as a made-for-TV movie. I guess that the reason it was written, for that and to sell lots and lots of books. I guess one is supposed to see it as an ode to a love story and, as that, it works. Just don’t expect originality.
