This is the last I will read in this series. I loved the first two books. I gave them 5 stars. Would give higher if possible. The Third was a big let down. This last just destroyed it for me. First the characters are all changing. Rezkin was a confidant warrior with no issues. Now he is an emotional wreck! Was that really necessary? Where is written that a Hero can't be confident and stable? Where is it written that the hero always has to suffer misery? The way the story is handling his relationship with Frisha has turned into a complete soap opera. ( I hate Soap Operas and don't want to read them. Leave all the emotional baggage out of the story! A relationship does add to a story line so I have no issues with that. But this has gotten annoying) The way the problems are piling on Rezkin is getting old. Didn't he already have enough with a mad king? now you got demons piled on top of that. Has someone else taken over this story? The changes from the first two books to the last two is a total let down.

If you haven't read book 3, don't and then don't bother with book 4. The first 2 books of King's Dark Tidings were unbelievably good (I might even say great). Stop there and daydream the rest of the story yourself (you'll do a much better job). Book 3 and 4 are way out in never never land and don't belong to the story. I can only hope that book 5 will start with Res waking up from a dream (nightmare) and resume the story from the end of book 2. If you have read book 3 (I'm sorry - but your with me) then you might as well read book 4. There are a few interesting parts of the story that you might enjoy. I doubt I'll ever trust a series from Kel Kade again. I can only hope that he will put the King's Dark Tidings out of it's misery with book 5. When I started reading King's Dark Tidings I thought is was a trilogy. The series is really 2 different stories. Kel Kade should have made 2 series - KDT and whatever the other story is. I will say that the writing is good and interesting it's just a different story that doesn't go together.

I finished this book and grimaced. I love love loved the first book, but it seems that the author has forgotten what made the story good, or just run out of ideas. This book is a confusing mess that skips abruptly from scene to scene and leaves too much unspoken. Too often in this book there are mysteries hinted at, and then just forgotten about. While reading I have so many questions about what things mean, who people are, how magic and power work, etc, that I just get lost in a jumble of action scenes. This is an overaching organizational mess with a few cool scenes in it.---Spoilers below---Why was Tam alone? What was he doing when he got captured? Is it even mentioned? Why did Rezkin accept the Loreshi Queen's offer? He never seemed interested at all. The way that whole interaction was written, it seemed like Rezkin had some clever plan up his sleeve that would get him what he wanted without sacrificing anything. But no, I guess not. I guess it's just badly written. The character and relationship growths are boring. Frisha's arc kinda makes sense from her perspective, but not from the perspective of Tieran. What happened to that gardener mage she was flirting with? Oh not important I guess. What is the background of Wesson? Keep hinting, but never fulfilling just gives me blue balls. How is it remotely satisfying to push every female away from Rezkin and leave him "married" to a bitchy queen he never wants to see again?

This series had me from the first book. Kel Kades writing style is in depth but the pages fly by. I cant believe how great this series is. To be honest the 3rd book almost lost me, by far my least favorite. However book 4 has taken the cake. It really delves into the story and is also much broader and fast paced compared to the others. It expands on the relationships of the characters and also brings an end to a vexing one. In the end I cant wait for the next book, hopefully it won't take a year.However I do have a bad feeling that by the end of the story everyone's going to have a happy ending except for Rez who will probably be killed for the greater good.

The action sequences were so fun to read! Absolutely fantastic! However, and I understand this may be an unpopular opinion, I've been rooting for Rez and Frisha since the beginning and to see her end up with Tieran sent me into a whole new level of pissed off! I don't care to see Rez end up with some silver-eyed babe when I've been getting the Rezkin/Frisha dinamic since book one. I mean, why focus on Frisha wanting someone that loves her (and Rez definitely does), giving her more insight into Rezkin's past so she better understands him, and giving her opportunities to shine as a queen, only to throw her into a relationship with someone else just because he gives her a declaration of love. It felt like a giant cop-out and giant slap in the face! I was expecting a slower-building, budding love story that ends with Rez finally realizing that he has always loved her and getting that satisfying moment when he and Frisha come together. I want Frisha with Rezkin together, damnit!

About the Author

Sophocles was born at Colonus, just outside Athens, in 496 BC, and lived ninety years. His long life spanned the rise and decline of the Athenian Empire; he was a friend of Pericles, and though not an active politician he held several public offices, both military and civil. The leader of a literary circle and friend of Herodotus, he was interested in poetic theory as well as practice, and he wrote a prose treatise On the Chorus. He seems to have been content to spend all his life at Athens, and is said to have refused several invitations to royal courts.Sophocles first won a prize for tragic drama in 468, defeating the veteran Aeschylus. He wrote over a hundred plays for the Athenian theater, and is said to have come first in twenty-four contests. Only seven of his tragedies are now extant, these being Ajax, Antigone, Oedipus the King, Women of Trachis, Electra, Philoctetes, and the posthumous Oedipus at Colonus. A substantial part of The Searches, a satyr play, was recovered from papyri in Egypt in modern times. Fragments of other plays remain, showing that he drew on a wide range of themes; he also introduced the innovation of a third actor in his tragedies. He died in 406 BC.E.F. Watling was educated at Christ's Hospital and University College, Oxford. His translations of Greek and Roman plays for the Penguin Classics include the seven plays of Sophocles, nine plays of Plautus, and a selection of the tragedies of Seneca.

One needn’t be educated in the Greek classics to know that somewhere in this trilogy there is a man who gets intimate with his mom. However, the common conception of Oedipus —as in the Oedipal Complex—probably has more to do with Freud and Freudian psychoanalysis than it does with this story.The three plays of this trilogy are “Oedipus the King” [a.k.a. “Oedipus Rex” or “Oedipus Tyrannus”], “Oedipus at Colonus,” and “Antigone” [pronounced “an-tig-o-nee” rather than “anti-gone.”] Of the three plays, the first is the most well-known.In “Oedipus the King,” the titular character is facing a crisis in his kingdom. When the oracles are consulted about how the calamity might be brought to an end, Oedipus is told that he must banish the killer of his predecessor, i.e. the previous king of Thebes. Oedipus consults his own oracle to find out who the ne’er-do-well is who murdered the last king, and the fortune-teller tells Oedipus that he’ll never say who committed the killing —but acknowledges that he does know who it was. Oedipus mocks and threatens the oracle until the fortune-teller gets fed up and tells the king that it was he, Oedipus, who killed his predecessor. Oedipus doesn’t believe it at first, thinking it’s an attempt to facilitate a coup. Far ickier than the accusation of murder is the fact that —if true— it means that Oedipus has been getting busy with his own mother and has even sired children with her. Oedipus calls for an investigation. When a peasant who saw everything is called to testify, his story strikes Oedipus as disturbingly familiar. It turns out that Oedipus’s blood father (the previous king) had been told by his own oracle that his son would kill him and steal his wife, and so he had baby Oedipus sent away to die. Oedipus (who had been rescued from being staked up on a mountain) was coming through Thebes, not knowing it was his homeland, when he had a skirmish on the road with the man that he didn’t realize was both the king and his father. Later, Oedipus marries the queen (apparently there were no busts or portrait paintings of the last king anywhere) and becomes the king without knowing that the man he’d killed in self-defense was the last king / his father. When the truth revealed, everything goes south. The queen kills herself, and Oedipus’s response is almost as severe. Oedipus gouges out his own eyes and goes into exile. Antigone, one of Oedipus’s daughters, says she will be the ex-king’s guide, and because the old man is blind and not familiar with where he’s going, he doesn’t have much choice but to accept.In “Oedipus at Colonus,” Oedipus and Antigone arrive at neighborhood on the fringes of Athens, i.e. Colonus, and are planning to take up residency. The locals are welcoming until they find out the blind man is Oedipus. The story of the ex-king who killed his father and got it on with his mother has spread far and wide. The townspeople agree to call in their king, Theseus, and let him decide. Theseus decides to shelter the Thebean ex-king, being moved by his story of how Oedipus was unwittingly ruined and how the former king accepted his punishment when his offenses were brought to light. Theseus’s support becomes more complicated when Creon, a royal from Thebes, shows up and says they need Oedipus back because an oracle now says that the location of his burial will determine the outcome of a future conflict. Oedipus says no way, and Creon has Antigone and her sister (who joined them at Colonus to warn Oedipus) kidnapped. Theseus faces a serious challenge because now his actions might bring the city-state to war, let alone offending the gods. However, he sticks to his guns and rescues the daughters and agrees to personally oversee Oedipus’s burial (so that no one can grave-rob and move Oedipus’s body to a position that would create a more pleasing forecast from the oracles.)“Antigone” takes place after the death of Oedipus. The dutiful Antigone is now back in Thebes. When her brother Polyneices is killed and Creon orders that the prince not be buried, Antigone refuses to accept the decree. She steals the body and gives it a proper burial. Antigone was engaged to marry Creon’s son, Haemon, but Creon decrees that the woman will be imprisoned in a cave for disobedience of the king’s order. Haemon asks his father to be reasonable, but Creon will have none of it. Eventually, the words of an oracle convince Creon to change his mind, but he finds himself too late. Like Oedipus, various ruin then befalls Creon.While the details of the story may strain credulity in places, these works are powerful morality tales. The recurring theme is that one can’t make an end-run around fate by way of vice and neither can one otherwise manhandle events to achieve a desirable outcome. Oedipus’s father sends his son to be killed, but the outcome remains the same. Creon can’t plant Oedipus’s corpse where he pleases and neither can he deny a man proper burial. It’s almost a karmic tale. Perhaps, the path to pleasing the gods is through virtue, and not through finagling one’s way to compliance with forecasts.I find it fascinating how crucial a role is played by oracles throughout the three plays—and what that says about human nature. The fortune-tellers are always right and are always heeded. In a sense, this story tells one about humanity’s fear of uncertainty, what people are willing to do to allay that fear, and how the world is ultimately too complex for those attempts to work out. The law of unintended consequences remains ever present.I enjoyed these plays. They are brief, stirring, readable, and thought-provoking. I would recommend them for any reader—particularly those interested in the classics.

There’s a pattern with many of these Greek tragedies. Through the sad tales of cursed families, they illustrate the evolution of Western civilization. Fifth-century Athens was a light in the dark, a young democracy, and the Athenians used tragedy as a tool to preserve history, learn from it, and document their growth. With The Oresteia, we saw Aeschylus tackle the ideas of law and respect for the state, and Sophocles continues along those lines, but places the focus on another great philosophical problem–free will vs. fate.Though heady, the plays also had an entertainment value. The Spring festival celebrating Dionysus provided an opportunity for playwrights such as Sophocles to compete and put on a performance for thousands of spectators. Tragedies usually ran in the morning and the more lighthearted comedies toward the end of the day.Being tragedies, lighthearted these three Theban plays are not. They adhere to the Greek tradition of dramatizing the lives of a cursed family, but instead of the House of Atreus, we gain a jagged view of humanity’s affliction through the House of Oedipus.The first play, Antigone, is actually the last chronologically. Oedipus is dead, yet the curse continues. Thebes has defeated an onslaught of Argosian warriors, led by Polynices, the exiled son of Oedipus. He was killed, along with his brother, Eteocles. Antigone, daughter of Oedipus and sister of both Polynices and Eteocles, wants to bury the body of Polynices, but her uncle and Theban King, Creon, threatens anyone who does so with death. I think you can see where things are headed…Next comes Oedipus the King, the shining star of the three plays–the painting within the frame. Each piece has its own beauty, but we move back in time to that dreadful moment of discovery. It’s through Oedipus’ actions that we see an evolution in Greek theater. The plot builds perfectly according to Aristotle’s Poetics and is the cornerstone of many a modern story. Oedipus represents the everyman, marching forward, thinking destiny is within his control, only to discover that he is a mere puppet to fate.A plague has struck Thebes and the only solution is to bring the killer of Thebes’ last king, Laius, to justice. Through plot twists and turns, Oedipus dedicates himself to finding the killer, only to discover that he is the killer, and that he has fulfilled a prophecy which he has tried to avoid all of his life. The truth is too much. His wife and mother, Jocasta, kills herself, and Oedipus gouges out his eyes, his one act of defiant free will.Finally, we are presented with Oedipus at Colonus. Many years have passed and Oedipus has become a wanderer, guided by the loyal Antigone. He finds himself in the town of Colonus, just outside of Athens. The oracular prophecy makes its next move: Oedipus has arrived in the place where he must be buried. This play is an ode to Athens, and by being buried just outside the city, it will be protected for all time.Thus ends the Theban trilogy. Similar to my Aeschylus readings, I picked up the Robert Fagles translation. Sophocles’ writing flows easier and is less dense than that of Aeschylus, so if you had a tough time with The Oresteia, you may find Sophocles to be more in your wheelhouse. From Freud to soap operas, you’ll certainly begin to understand the many references to this bit of dramatic history.

If you are already familiar with the Oedipus Trilogy, this is a fantastic free digital edition. The formatting is easy to read, the text reads easily. My chief complaint with this copy is that there is no navigable table of contents to easily move from one play to the next. I have great admiration and respect for Prof. Damodaran, and I don't know anyone who doesn't. I have attended some of his conferences and they are usually packed. Not only does he explain things with great clarity, but he delivers his conferences with gusto and humor.This is a fabulous reference text. The author covers practically every aspect of valuation: big firms, small ones, private cos., real estate, m&a, etc. What I really liked were his methods for including option theory and use of options formulae for calculating value when there is no cash-flow, such as oil or mining reserves, or some sort of contingent claim on an asset.The section on use of estimates for cost of equity and capital are highly detailed, and don't miss any of the many aspects that can affect the variables involved: country risk, default risk, etc.Although the book is readable, and very clear and organized in the layout of the methodology, it is heavy reading. I for one, read at most one or two chapters at a time, because of the high level of detail, and the many sub-themes within the broad chapters. Also, I have had to read quite a few chapters once or twice because the material is abundant and the many formulae are easy to forget. That is why i would consider it a reference text, as opposed to other books of Damodaran on this subject, which are much more synthetic. His most recent book: "Narratives and Numbers" complements this text very well.

As a businessman and a student of business, I consider this one of the most important business books that I own. I consult it regularly and use it in every consideration I have involving valuation. This is a complex and subtle topic. I know people wish it were a straightforward topic that you could simply apply inputs and crank the handle and receive a sure valuation that everyone could agree to. But real life isn’t like that. This is why every deal has a buyer and a seller. We each have different approaches, different needs, different desires, and different expectations about what tomorrow will bring.Professor Damodaran has gathered together a vast number of valuation techniques and gives us great background and context for applying them and when they will tend to provide good information and when they can mislead us. I think this is tremendously valuable. But it requires work on the part of the student or the business person trying to come up with a useful valuation for some asset.In reality, we should use multiple techniques when considering any asset and see how well they agree with each other and where there are divergent valuations. We should then consider what is causing those differences and see if that analysis yields some valuable insight.So, if you want to think deeply and seriously about valuation, this is a great resource. If you want a simple machine to crank out a number, this is not valuation for dummies.I recommend this book strongly.Reviewed by Craig Matteson, Saline, MI

Many of the numbers have been updated since the 2nd edition of this book was published some 10 years ago. That is, many charts and tables have data going through as late as 2011 (although some still use old data). To be fair, it is very hard to find really good examples of things, so I don't really blame him for not updating some of the examples. Most of the topics though are still pretty much the same as the 2nd edition (this is also to be expected), but, in some instances, the discussion is updated to cover recent events.Overall, this is still an excellent valuation book. Especially for someone that has not read the 2nd edition, this is an excellent resource. I would describe Damodaran's writing style as "honest," which means that he gives you both the good and the bad. He acknowledges that valuation is inherently a subjective process, which, in my opinion, can only be really done well with experience. I find this book as kind of a road map to good valuation fundamentals, as Damodaran shows you what alternatives you can do and what things to avoid.

Aswath Damodaran is the master when it comes to valuing companies.No one does a better job than he does.Small growing companies making losses, large behemoths lumbering to extinction, Mr Damodaran has a way to value them all.His blog is really good and the fact that he makes his spreadsheets available to download is literally priceless.Deals with all kinds of issues in valuation such as Net Operating Losses, Operating Leases, Research and Development Expenses, Stock Options, RSUs, and Cost of Capital Calculations.Invaluable.

I bought this book to replace an older valuation book also by Damodoran. I'm a professional analyst and am quite familiar with valuations, and this book provides a very thorough and comprehensive guide. I bought it just in time to serve as guidance through a very heavy and comprehensive research project.Everything I needed for the project was in the book, however one thing surprised and disappointed me: the organization. I simply don't see much of a logical flow in the chapter structure, so I think it would be more difficult to someone who wasn't already familiar with the basic structure of the valuation process. Why is market efficiency jammed between unrelated chapters? Why is the discussion and examples of the pro-forma capitalization of R&D split between distant chapters? Throughout a single project, one would have to keep the book marked in several diffent places, not neccessarily in the order that one would have to deal with the questions if one were doing a valuation. The result is that this book is less easy to use as a practical guidebook than it could be, and will keep one busy in the index looking for where subjects are addressed.This is nit-picking however. Professor Damodoran is to be congratulated for producing such a high quality and comprehensive text on valuation.

You have to hand it to Lee Child. He obviously listens to his fans. Perhaps like me you are somewhat disappointed that Tom Cruise is the movie version of Jack Reacher. When you have the money to buy the movie rights to a character who someone else has created, I guess you have poetic license to recreate him in your own image. Unfortunately in this case it involves shrinking a 6'5" 250 pound man into a package that is only 5'7" and 170 pounds. Even though the movie rights belong to Tom Cruise, Lee Child has no reason to reduce the size and presence of his star character. In the first 28 pages of this novel, Mr. Child has clearly wanted all of his readers to know that Jack Reacher could be described as 'Bigfoot' or 'The Incredible Hulk'. In fact early on one of the characters in this excellent story calls him "huge", "not quite seven feet, but close." And he has "Fists like Thanksgiving turkeys." Mr. Cruise paid a lot of money to buy this character, but he doesn't "own it".I have read all 22 of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels and this one might arguably be his best. The longest journey begins with but a single step and Mr. Child takes his readers on what appears to be a simple quest to make things right. Nothing official, nothing legal/illegal, just simply Jack Reacher trying to do the right thing -- possibly to atone for some of his past actions. But of course his journey becomes more complicated the longer he pursues his goal. We are exposed to our current opioid epidemic and how the legal system of manufacture and distribution of pharmaceutical grade opioids has been corrupted and circumvented. And we are shown the horrible plight of our disfigured and disabled veterans. Interestingly enough these two timely problems are tied together and become a major part of the plot.Lee Child is definitely at the top of his craft. This novel is a perfect example of how someone's imagination has allowed them to create an interesting, insightful, and enjoyable read while informing us about two major problems affecting today's society. The fact that it is extremely well written doesn't take away from the snarky and cynical humor peppered throughout this book. The characters are all well described and their motives are crystal clear, even if they contradict one another's. When you finish reading it, and I'll bet that you won't want it to end, the artistry with which Mr. Child tied all of his subplots together will be wonderfully apparent. And at the end, while pondering what you have just read, you will consider once again who the real monster in the room is.

The Midnight Line is not a typical Jack Reacher story. Instead, Reacher, a former Army MP major, puts on his Military Police cap and does some serious sleuthing from the opening scene where he finds a West Point class ring in a pawn shot in Rapid City South Dakota to his search to find the rightful owner of the ring in Wyoming. Reacher is a West Point grad himself and knows that few graduates of the Point would give up their ring unless something bad had happened to them. He decides that maybe he can help the owner of the ring and immediately starts gathering clues to identify this fellow West Pointer. Of course, as the story develops, a simple lost and found case becomes dangerous as Reacher creates enemies in the oxycodone and fentanyl drug trafficking business. Reacher must use all his skills to protect life and limb.It doesn’t take Reacher long to get to Wyoming, where he thinks he may find the owner of the West Point ring. I was much impressed by Lee Child’s ability to paint impressive word pictures of the places Reacher visits in Wyoming. I never thought of Lee Child as a fine writer – I do now. Wyoming came to life for me in the pages of this novel thanks to Lee Child's writing skills. Additionally, Reacher teams up with a former FBI agent who is also searching for a missing person and the dialogue between Reacher, the agent, and other characters in the story is crisp, clear, believable, and often entertaining.The Midnight Line is a police procedural, something like a Harry Bosch novel by Michael Connelly. I am guessing some readers are going to be unhappy that there is less violent action in The Midnight Line than in a typical Reacher story. For me, I liked this change of pace and direction and was impressed with the new more cerebral Reacher, a man well educated and thoughtful. Don’t get me wrong, when mayhem is needed, Reacher is up to the task! When we finally get to the end of the story, Lee Child ties up all the details nicely and leaves us with a feeling of satisfaction that all loose ends are resolved as Reacher heads off for some new adventure.I may be in the minority, but I like this new Reacher and I think that Lee Child has used all his talents as a writer and story teller to best advantage. Unfortunately, Reacher fans are going to have to wait; the novel will not be released until November 7, 2017. The Midnight Line looks like a best seller to me and I recommend it without reservation to Reacher fans. 4.5 stars.Update: The more I think about it, the better I like this new Reacher novel. My wife is reading it now and she thinks it is excellent; she is a serious mystery story buff. Five stars.Update 2: I wrote this review two months ago and predicted this new Reacher novel would go right to the top of the best seller list, which is where it stands on this first day of publication. If you read this book, leave me a comment and tell me if you agree that this is one of the best books in the Reacher series. Thanks. Russell

Disclaimer: This is just my own personal opinion. As a Reacher fan, of course I had to buy this book. Unfortunately this time around the characters were less interesting to me; I preferred "Never Go Back" where Jack went to seek out Turner and the characters had more meaning, simply because Reacher's been calling Turner's phone starting two books before that. I guess I'm guilty of wanting to see more Reacher-beat-people-up, and in this book, there was not enough of that. There also wasn't enough of him outsmarting/witting people. All in all, I felt all the conflicts were resolved much too easily with little pushback. That won't stop me from buying the next Reacher book, but I definitely won't be reading this one again.
