From Booklist

In 1939, at the start of World War II, Christophe was six years old, too young to understand the increasing legislation against the Jews of France. Christophe and her mother lived in Paris with the author's grandmother; her father, a soldier, was taken prisoner by the German invaders. In 1942 Christophe and her mother were arrested as they attempted to flee Paris for the unoccupied zone in southern France. They were subsequently interned in French camps. In May 1944 they were deported to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in Germany; in April 1945 the author and her mother were among hundreds of prisoners taken by train from the camp. After the SS abandoned the train, they were freed, and in June they were reunited with Christophe's father. Christophe's memoir can best be described as a series of snapshots--brief paragraphs, some no longer than a sentence, and written in the present tense. These simple "snapshots" relate cruelty in vivid detail. George Cohen

I had been searching for thos book online for well over a year, however, every option I saw had this book listed for close to $10,000!! Beautiful and profound and touching of a story as this is and as impressed I am with the story of Francine Christophe as seen in her video on human, I absolutely cannot afford that price. Who could! I asked a friend who is a teacher to help me try to find this book in the library as it was not in my public library, and she found it in a local College Library. But before I got to that Library, I found the book being sold at this site for approximately $25 at the time. So I immediately bought it. I am thankful to this seller for selling it at a reasonable price and not selling it for thousands and thousands of dollars, so that more of us can have access to it. As for the story of Francine Christophe, I'm thankful to her for sharing the story of her childhood. It is a profound story. If you have not yet done so make sure you search Francine Christophe and human to see the little video where she tells of the story about the chocolate, is what compelled me to get this book. The wisdom of Francine Christophe is profound, you truly do feel like you are in a concentration camp with her and observing this experience. You will probably cry when you read this book, so make sure you have some tissues or at least a good t-shirt to wipe your eyes. This will be a good book for anyone wanting to understand what being a concentration camp would be like as well as experience of refugees and the impact that we should try to be in the lives of our fellow human beings.

Francine Christophe's account of her experiences at the French Concentration Camps at Poitiers, Drancy and Beaune-La-Rolande, it is a very interesting book. She tells the story in a very personal way. She leaves nothing out and tells an honest story about her experience in the camps. Her honest writing helped me understand the hardship that a whole group of children survived during War World 2. I would want people to read the book and see what those people went through at those camps.

It is horrible, very real and at the same time beautiful.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up -In this fascinating account of the inventions and practices through time that led to modern film, Clee offers vivid descriptions of the key players from Giovanni Battista della Porta to Thomas Edison and their influences on the history of imaging from the 16th century to the silver screen. The story is complemented with trivia; biographical facts; and grayscale images of diagrams, film posters, photographs, and sketches, though the illustrations seem surprisingly few for a piece describing the history of playing with light, lenses, and projection. By demonstrating how early project kaleidoscopes and lighting and lenses combined to create original microscopes, Clee makes certain that readers understand that modern photography and filmmaking are rooted in both science and art.-Jodi Kearns, University of Akron, OH Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. For a lot of people, pre-film visual entertainments hold a nominal appeal. They're fun to look at and play with for a few minutes, but they can't command the attention like, say, a game where you crush candy on your cellphone by spamming the # symbol, or whatever it is the kids are doing these days. For a smaller, perhaps luckier group, the old technologies- the camera obscura, puppet theaters, magical lantern slides- continue to exert a dreamy fascination. If you're one of these people, this book is for you."Before Hollywood" takes the reader on a sumptuously-illustrated tour, from the days when science and magic were comfortable handmaidens and children could be amused by projected still images and shadow forms, up to about the time at the beginning of the modern era, where several individuals claimed a partial stake in the invention of the motion picture. The book does a good job of showing how history sometimes does a mean retconning on certain dreamers and scientists who don't get the credit they deserve (one Emile Reynaud is a truly tragic figure) while others are lavished with perhaps a bit more praise than they deserve (it would be unseemly to name names). The book concludes around the time that the bare bones of a film grammar emerged, with the likes of the Lumière Brothers firing their rocket into the eye of the Moon, and a gunslinger firing from the screen's canvas into the ranks of a distraught crowd, courtesy of Edison Studios. It's not taxing, revelatory history for the most part, but Clee's book provides ample and beautiful photos and illustrations (a definite must for the subject at hand) and regardless of how much you know about the subject, you're bound to come away entertained, if not a bit enriched by the journey. Recommended.

An invaluable book if you're a film buff. Here is essentially the birth and origin of hollywood as we know it today.

Very good introduction to early film and pre film history. The text hits all the important historical events and puts them in a very concise and easy to absorb order. The illustrations are excellent and they enhance this study.Perfect book to teach a class of younger students who really need to know more about how films at the superplex came about.

40 Years of Chez Panisse: The Power of Gathering, by Alice Waters

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Books of the Month, August 2011: In 1971, a young Montessori teacher with no cooking experience beyond having friends to dinner inspired some of these friends to help her open a restaurant in Berkley, serving one perfectly delicious meal each night. In 40 Years of Chez Panisse: The Power of Gathering, Alice Waters gives a lively history of how this modest beginning grew into a mecca that helped catalyze the rise of local food culture. Photos and ephemera that evoke each decade come alive through vivid little stories from 90 other collaborators and patrons—the chefs, waiters, fishmongers, farmers, winemakers, bakers, food writers, and friends who grew with the restaurant into an extended, cross-generational family. First galvanized by political action at UCLA in the mid-‘60s, Waters experienced a more personal revolution in Europe: Paris taught her how food “anchored life to the land” and café culture built community; in London, she devoured the culinary classics Elizabeth David, internalizing her ethic of seeking fresh, local ingredients and “leaving well alone”; and in Greece and Turkey, she awakened to the transformative power of hospitality. Backed by an inventive crew, Waters brought all these elements to life at Chez Panisse, buying directly from growers (giving them, for the first time, bylines on the menu) and cultivating a hospitality that extended into the community through incredible parties and initiatives like the Edible Schoolyard Project. Beyond creating four decades of memorable meals, Chez Panisse demonstrated how restaurants can shift America's cultural relationship to agriculture and eating, a change that gains momentum each year. Destined to become a food-lit classic, this gorgeous volume pays homage to the power of gathering around a table, culminating in this luscious truth: "ripeness is all." --Mari Malcolm

Even if you own the book version, don't overlook the audio version from Audible.com -- it's incredible. Hear the people in the book come to life. Even Marian Cunningham and others who have passed on are in there talking away, so they must have been working on it forever. It's wonderful, fascinating, and less than $5. Highly recommended.

Gave this book to a friend who just opened a restaurant called “Gather”.

This book is amazing. Buy it.Alice has modeled "The Power of Gathering" for 40 years. Her celebration of milestones on this journey are captivating. This book makes you want to mark the special moments in the passions you pursue. Don't let time click by, take the time to stop, invite the people who have shared in your work, and celebrate together your contributions to make an impact in the world.Alice models celebrating what you do in life, with the ones you do life with.

Would have lied some recipes.

This was a book club selection and it seems a rather odd one, since it's more a browsing book than a reading book, but having lived in Berkeley when Alice Waters was first starting Chez Panisse and having been part of some of the campus goings-on at the time, I found it a nice trip down memory lane. In truth, it becomes too "in-group" for me after awhile. Too many chefs, too many foods I'd never heard of, too many things that were obviously written to include all of her friends, but of little interest to the folks who can't afford to eat at her very expensive restaurant...and whose unsophisticated palate probably wouldn't enjoy it even if they could afford to eat there.

This retrospective of the famous 'Chez Panisse' is a delightful read. It becomes obvious that Alice Waters is only one player in the development of an entirely new genre of restaurants, indeed a new way of looking at the food we eat. Many friends pulled together to change the world of food. The locavore movement started here. Interesting that this bunch of radical-ish Berkleyites made a real change happen in the world that they never would have suspected in the late 60's and early 70's.

Wonderful Tribute to Ms. Waters

thanks was great gift
