I loved reading this book! Ecologist Lauren Oakes takes the reader on a moving journey to understand the causes of the decline of a tree—the yellow cedar in Southeast Alaska—and what the loss of this species means for the Alaskans whose lives are bound to it in myriad ways. Through Lauren’s story, we are drawn into the mind and heart of a sensitive, intelligent young woman as she comes into her own as a scientist. We learn from her about forest ecology and climate science as she takes us into her classrooms and then tromps through the cold, wet forests of Alaska—right along with her team of spunky, adventurous field hands. We learn from the people she interviews—natural resource managers, foresters, indigenous Alaskans, and other ecologists as we come to understand their deep connections to the Alaskan wilderness—and what they have to teach Lauren about holding grief and love at the same time. As Lauren begins to sleuth out the causes of yellow cedar’s demise, she must confront her own grief, first as she discovers the extent and speed with which the yellow cedar has retreated from its historic range, and then again when her own father dies unexpectedly. Ultimately, though, Lauren buoys us with her indefatigable spirit as she finds a way to hold hope close in a world ravaged by climate change—and uncover what actions she can take in the face of this enormous challenge. I thoroughly enjoyed the highly readable Canary book. I’ll disclose here that I worked with the author during her studies in Alaska, and continue to admire her in this new effort in communicating science so broadly.Dr. Oakes tells her compelling story of a scientist who explores the long-term changes ecological changes and social impacts of an Alaskan forest directly affected by climate change. There’s no need to speculate about possible future changes wrought by climate, the yellow-cedar forests that she studies have already been highly altered, and now appear as broad landscapes of dead skeleton trees.The author has obvious credibility, given her remote and grueling field studies in the wilds of Alaska, her publishing in top scientific journals, and perhaps especially in her open and honest writing style for this book. The Canary gives a personal glimpse behind the scenes of science.Graduate students and young scientists would benefit by her narratives on selecting a meaningful research topic, adapting to the many challenges and setbacks of pulling off field studies, and bringing research to fruition.The Canary is an excellent choice for book groups or readers interested in the people and landscapes of coastal Alaska. Particularly notable is a section on how a diverse group of Alaskans value the yellow-cedar tree, mourn its losses, and comment variously on what could be done to assist in its survival.I feel more optimistic just knowing that there is a new generation of people like Dr. Oakes to guide us forward in a changing world.
This is my favorite genre, and Oakes sits with the best of them! I'm thrilled to have discovered her work and thoroughly enjoyed every page, every step, she brought me on through her journey to understand how our world is changing and how it affects us. She brings Alaska to life with beautiful imagery and multi-dimensional characters while at the same time showing how the story of the Yellow Cedar is a story for the world. It's a book that makes one rethink any automatic reaction to the phrase "climate change." Oakes deals with this complexity with grace, humility, and humor. I'm excited to read it again!
Amidst all the gloom about climate change, this book offers a surprisingly change, this book offers a surprisingly hopeful perspective by describing how both a tree species and the people who rely on it in southeast Alaska have adapted to rising average temperatures.The book is a great mix of ecology, social science and personal narrative. I've never been to Alaska's outer coast, but I can now imagine the challenges of doing fieldwork (or really anything) there. I also appreciated how the author started with a focused view of her own work and then broadens to a more general discussion of adaptation to climate changeRecommend this for anyone interested in ecology, Alaska, PhD students trying to find their way and really anyone who wants a climate change story that goes beyond "its happening and its bad"
