This book is a treasure trove of furniture types, woods and styles to be found typically across every Asian country. The book is laid out in countries from the classics of China and Japan to Philippines and Tibet. There are two amazing chapters on Woods and Tools. What stands this book apart is that it is a glossy picturesque viewpoint of furniture as artwork rather than colonial things that were unnecessary or too expensive or (probably correct) an abuse of natural resources. In some respects, the book leaves gaping holes about the decisions our colonial masters took in their pursuit of native excellence and craftsmanship. Doubtless there was child labour, exploitation of plantations, forced slavery in low-paid jobs. There are no judgements but as such that is what gives the book its charm and accessibility. Quite obviously it is not meant to show how normal Asian families live today and even the well-heeled would be hard-pushed to collect and find most of the pieces listed in their country's section, given the sheer cost, rarity and availability. Its purpose is not to judge, not to contextualise the circumstances these pieces found themselves, but rather to take an historical audit of the furniture in the region and to assess the styles, motifs and vocabulary in each area.I would recommend this book to someone who just wants to lose themselves in the romantic possibilities of Asian antique furniture and to luxuriate in the possible rather than dream about the impossible. It is a book that rewards soul, that nourishes the creative workmanship that these people imbued in their works and that is ultimately a tribute to the human race, endeavour and how some rich people used to live. It is a directory and sourcebook indeed, but as you leaf through its wide crisp beautifully-illustrated sheets, dwell a little on the people behind these images and the sheer imagination, insight and narrative they wanted us all to see and believe in. I truly loved this book! It's something like "Lost in Space" meets "Star Trek Voyager". Amazing characters that draw you into their lives and take you on their journey towards a new world! It has humans, externals, AI as well as a terrorist organization trying to stop them. Action-packed and full of some crazy things happening! I can't wait to read more! Great read!

What is not to like in this book Back alley brawls, who is actually doing the sabotage? What will happen when the Orion is damaged beyond repair? The characters are solid and well intruduced as the book progresses and The only thing I hate is the cliffhanger ending. So when is that next book due out.

Although there are hundreds of stories of space adventures aboard ship, there are not a lot of well developed space colony adventures. I have hopes of this series helping to fill that void. The main character, Dean, is one of those reluctant heroes that is dragged into play without his consent. I can see him doing great things for the colony and I look forward to seeing his relationship with Stacey grow. Will keep a watch for Book 2.

Another well written story! The next book in the series is scheduled for December. I look forward to reading this next chapter. I enjoyed reading this prequel!

This was a solid book overall. Chaney and Yanez are both good writers with other series that I've enjoyed, so I was excited to check out their combined effort and wasn't disappointed by the technical aspects of the writing itself. The premise was good and the narrative was well-paced, but I found that the characters lacked depth and I had a hard time getting really invested in them. The antagonists were actually far better developed and more interesting to me.

As if Cheney and Yanez weren’t enough on their own, you put the two together and the story reflects their innate talents as storytellers.I’m not going to give away anything in this book, but I’ll just say I read it quickly because it was excellent.

This story introduces to the "before" universe of the Renegade series. The story is informative, but lacks something in the way the characters are developed. The characters are too involved with each other too soon without any sign of wariness or distrust. There needs to be more development each major character. The plot line is good in concept and draws the reader into the story.

Both Chaney and Yanez are are decent writers. Working together requires some kind of extra effort and they seemed to have put it together. The book is fast placed, lots of action and decent character development. At this point it seems to me that the best character development is not with the main characters. We will see on the next book. I am looking forward to the next in the series

What great potential existed in a story of two female postdocs competing within a group of men for two positions on a groundbreaking research project led by the esteemed Dr. Severin, also a woman! And a mystery story, too!Kit Owens and Diane Fleming meet in high school. Both exceptional students, they are inspired when the elegant Dr. Severin addresses their school about the wonders of scientific research. Despite socioeconomic and personality differences, Kit and Diane become study buddies, spending many evenings at Kit’s humble home poring over science homework. Kit is described as the more typical teenager who favors cutoffs and tee shirts, while Diane wears prairie skirts and blouses with high neck collars. When Diane begins to share a dark secret with Kit, I assumed it was of a sexual nature. Unless I missed it, the author never explained Diane’s bizarre choice of clothing.The secret IS the story. Kit carries the burden with her even as she achieves the first rung of her prize. She postdocs for Dr. Severin with a group of male chemists. To her shock and dismay, Dr. Severin brings her now-nemesis, Diane, into the group soon before the prestigious project will be staffed.As I learn more details of Diane’s secret, I remembered a television program, FORENSIC FILES, that told the same story a few years ago. A quick Google search turned up the story of Marie Robards, a Fort Worth high school student who shared the identical secret with her friend that Diane told Kit. Even stranger is an identical English class on Hamlet that plays into the secret. Stranger yet, the dialogue I found between Marie and her friend detailed in TEXAS MONTHLY was also identical to the words exchanged between Kit and Diane. I then assumed that GIVE ME YOUR HAND was a fictionalization of the Marie Robards story.As the Kit, Diane and Dr. Severin story slowly progresses, it bears no resemblance to the Marie Robards story, but I began to lose interest. I have no idea why Ms. Abbot used minute details of the Marie Robards story (which might have been more interesting than this book), but after comparing the actual dialogue to the words exchanged between Kit and Diane, I was more than confused, especially when I found no attribution.The description of life as a chemistry postdoc was accurate, but Ms. Abbot should have minimized the narrative about the actual lab work. Most of it is superfluous, and a key part of the story is flat wrong. The competition among the postdocs for the research slots is spot on. The chemists who have toiled for years, barely scraping by financially, know that careers are predicated by prime research positions, and the competition is cutthroat.I was disappointed by a book that held much promise. The story began to drag, and the ending was predictable. I expected more.

This book is supposed to be a thriller? It was disjointed and unbelievably dull. The descriptions of lab work were so tedious I started skipping whole pages in hopes of finding some action. The characters felt forced, as if they were supposed to be interesting but just weren’t. About 50 pages in I gave up and skimmed through the rest so I could learn Diane’s big secret. It’s not that shocking. Save your money unless you need help falling asleep. This book will do it!

As with every Abbott book I've read, this has at the core an interesting relationship between two women. Abbott's books are only nominally mysteries, they tend to be about the culture of women in whatever field she happens to be writing about. In this one, it's science and as always, she's really good at creating the surrounding environment in believable detail. That said, there's something a little flat and inevitable about where this book goes; Diane, who is the friend and rival of the main character Kit never fully comes to life and by the end, it all feels a bit pre-programmed. That said, it was still a fun read simply because Abbott is such a good, smart writer.

It’s as if any book with a woman as the antagonist is compared to Gone Girl. It is annoying and misleading. Bottom line, this book lacks any characters to like—not the bad girl, the “good” girl or the women they are both obsessed with—and that makes the whole thing unlikeable. The best part of the book is the selfishness laden letter from the bad girl’s mother to the good girl. It is so filled with self-absorption that you can’t help but feel even more sorry for the bad girl. That is literally in the last 10 pages of the book. Everything up until then is unsuspenseful and boring. The ending was uneventful and a big let down. It is almost impossible for me to stop reading a book I’ve started because I only read things that have mostly good reviews so I’m always waiting for the book to get good. This book completely failed to ever get good. I do not recommend this book and I’m very confused by anyone who would...

Reviewing this book, filled with confessions as it is, I have one of my own: I am a huge fan of Megan Abbott. “Give Me Your Hand,” is compelling reading, perfect for Summer on the beach or a cold Winter’s night.GMYH displays Abbott’s consummate skill as a weaver of guilt and innocence, of naivety and jadedness, of then and now. And, of course, of irony and unintended consequences.I won’t try to summarize the plot, thick as it is with twists and turns and multiple meanings in so many scenes. Abbott’s brilliance is everywhere throughout this book; her stunning capture of the mysteries of human behavior adorn this story in a way most compelling.I will not lie, there is a moment when I found suspension of disbelief difficult, but the story is so urgent and captivating I just didn’t care and let it go.This is a great read, steeped in Dostoyevsky and Freud, that simply satisfies and rewards the reader.

When you write a novel as great as The End Of Everything, it’s gotta be tough to match it. I subsequently read The Fever, which was somewhat absorbing, but tedious. Next, Give Me Your Hand—more absorbing than The Fever, but like The Fever, with characters that don’t penetrate too deeply. Kit becomes aware of a secret held by the ultimately inscrutable, diaphanous Diane. The secret is pretty well telegraphed. And it’s not even that interesting a secret. Sure, it’s a disturbing secret. But we’re supposed to believe it tormented Kit for years, who presently deals with her involvement in a gruesome horror with a weirdly non-traumatized, detached equanimity? I found that to be a bit psychologically contradictory, not so reconcilable. The novel is pretty gripping, although, as with The Fever, it drags on at least 30 pages too long.

About the Author

Eliza Griswold, a Guggenheim fellow, is the author of a collection of poems, Wideawake Field (FSG, 2007) and a nonfiction book, The Tenth Parallel: Dispatches from the Fault Line Between Christianity and Islam (FSG, 2010), a New York Times bestseller that was awarded the J. Anthony Lukas Prize. She has worked with Seamus Murphy in Africa and Asia for more than a decade. She lives in New York City.Seamus Murphy has photographed extensively in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa and Latin America. His photography from Afghanistan, begun in 1994, chronicles the tumultuous life of the Afghan people. A collection of this work, titled A Darkness Visible: Afghanistan, was published in 2008 and was produced as an award-winning film. He has won seven World Press Photo Awards. He lives in London.

This is a terrific collection of poems from women whose work is rarely noted. I'm an avid fan of the works by Middle Eastern women and teach a course on this literature at my university. There is an amazing body of work from the women of this region.

The landays and women who wrote them are enlightening and inspiring. I went to a reading by Eliza Griswold and was so moved by the amazing prose these women have created and the lengths they go to in order to share them with each other, often risking their lives. It's devastating how these women and their voices are oppressed by the Taliban. Hearing these poems makes a great case for funding more education for girls in Afghanistan and other Taliban-run areas.

Beautiful, moving and mesmerizing language. Courageous research. Stunning, haunting photographs. A work of great beauty. A book to read and re read over and over again.

Womens' oral poetry from Afghanistan--The explanatory sections weren't quite as seamless as I would have liked--Although they were necessary for understanding the Landays

Real, alive and full of spirit and hope. It gave me a much better understanding of what the lives of these women are like.

I liked the book and thought it was nicely put together. It had a few great pictures and the price was fantastic, you shouldnt have to mortage the house for a book of your favorite band. Personally I think the sellers of some other DL books need a serious reality check. That being said the flip side to this book is that it consists mainly of info that any DL fan would already know and have known for many years. I also found several bits of info in it that were wrong! As a diehard DL fan for over 20 years I found that annoying. If your going to put a book together commemorating a group that has been around as long as DL has you should at least be able to get the facts straight, and I say that because it was things that a DL fan would know to be wrong having heard the facts from the band themselves. I dont regret buying the book it is a nice little addition to my DL collection, I just wasn't very wow'd by it.

Great book a little out dated now but has a lot of information and pictures.

very disappointed in this. I knew from the reviews that it wasn't great but it almost seemed like the author really didn't like the band.

I like this book on DEF LEPPARD and the price also. There should be a lot of books on DEF LEPPARD since they are one of the greatest rock bands of all time when nobody is bearing false witness with a bunch of narrowminded gossip and lies about what kind of music they play.

I ordered this along with a new King Jame Version Rainbow,verses are highlighted, Study Bible.This cover was larger than I expected and actually leaves about an inch space from the bibles edge but that's fine. This looks identical to leather and the two tone looks very well and complementing. I'd easily recommend this book/ Bible cover.Also has a small inside pocket with a zipper, also a pen holder strap and the outside back cover has a large pocket but no zipper on that just a large pocket

We just received this, so I don't know about the durability. However, it looks cheap. Really cheap. From the picture, it looked like the lighter brown was an imitation suede, (since the whole thing is imitation leather,) but it's not. And the item doesn't come close to imitating leather. Imitation vinyl, maybe. Appears as though you could probably cut it with your fingernail. I still may return it, but it's a gift. Since I have no time to get another by Christmas, I wrapped it, and it my husband curls his nose at it, too, it's going back.

Very pleased with this purchase. After looking all over for a reasonably priced bible cover, I took a chance on this one and was not disappointed. The quality is nice and the size was large enough to cover my husband's large study bible.

I ordered this for my husband for Valentine's Day. He & i were both very pleased with it. Definitely looks like it's a more expensive cover than it is. Very sharp!

I bought this bible cover along with a nvi bible and cover is too big for the bible even though its a large bible. Check measurement before purchasing. Design and material are great just sizing is a little deceptive.

Size fit perfect PER MEASUREMENTS -I was a little leery because of all of the comments stating that the sizing was off. Size 'large' fit the Reformation Study Bible in perfectly which measures 9 1/2 x 6 3/4. Color also was exactly as pictured. According to the description it should have two pen loops -but as was pictured it does only have one. Wish it had a zippered outter pocket somewhere -but that would just add clutter to a fine case. The case is rough and tough and can't see what anyone would see wrong with it. It's just my style too which is drab and never too flashy -but high on functionality. Can't beat a 10 dollar price tag for this one.

Looks good, but I expected a slightly better quality 'feel'. Has stood up well and still looks good however.

Looks great, very good quality, and a great value. I'm glad I purchased it and recommend it for others to buy.
