Fantastic book, easy read.More than 50% of my life I've been a runner. I'm a white Caucasian male who is trying to always get better and I look up to East Africans in the sport of running because, quite frankly, they're the best. I'm always curious to know what kind of training they do differently, or what kind of food helps them. Obviously I'm aware that genetics plays a large role and no ONE THING will make me into a superstar outside of more training. But, I like learning about new cultures and seeing how I can implement changes into my running regiment using Kenyan tradition!This book is a fantastic read because it's a story about the authors journey to kenya to uncover secrets about kenyan success. What you find is that there are like 10+ "secrets" that, when all put together, lead to kenyan success. Not ONE thing like going barefoot, being at altitude, etc.

After reading "Born To Run", I purchased this book to learn more about why people run! This book is interesting - the best part being the final chapters. I learned why and how Kenyans strive to be athletes, how they train, the foods that sustain them, the trails they run on (with lions and other wildlife watching!) and what they do with their prize money as the best runners compete in worldwide competitions. The author and his family traveled to a Kenyan training camp, lived in a rented house in the town. and made many friends. The author met and ran with the top athletes in world competition including those who won olympic medals.Seventy years ago my husband ran long distance track in high school - he was a farm boy, spent early childhood in the mountains of West Virginia, and ran in school competitions barefoot! He won medals and enjoyed himself. Others wore sneakers but remember, they did not have thick soles! So now, with a son-in-law who runs triathalons and is training for an ultra marathon, I am amazed at how running shoes are changing to near barefoot status again.If you like to keep up with track competition and enjoy running or just watching from the sidelines like me (wishful thinking!) enjoy the book.

I'm one of the growing legion of US-based readers who makes it a regular practice to read The Guardian UK's web. There, I learned of Guardian writer Adharanand Finn's book. This enjoyable tale captures the enthusiastic spirit and genial disposition of its author and the willing, "let's go for it" all-in cooperation of his wife, Marietta. [Without her support, no trip, no book.]Finn's recounting details his decision to up sticks for Iten, a town in Rift Valley Province - the epicenter of Kenyan running dominance for the last decade or more. Ostensibly, this book is about Finn's 'game improvement' plan: having tasted a bit of success as an undergraduate runner, he takes up a friend's counsel to train hard for a year and reap the benefits. Being a good journalist, why not do that in the Rift Valley?In truth, the book is more about an exploration of Kenyan running dominance. What makes them such astonishing world-beaters? Finn's neat writing approach is to look for "the secret," all the while taking note of - and tallying - one factor after another chapter after chapter. The secret? After piling on the evidence, he concludes rightfully that there's no one thing. Here's his well-considered summary:"For six months I've been piecing together the puzzle of why Kenyans are such good runners. In the end there was no elixir, no running gene, no training secret that you could package up and present with flashing lights and fireworks. Nothing that Nike could replicate and market as the latest running fad. No, it was too complex, yet too simple, for that. It was everything, and nothing. I list the secrets in my head: the tough, active childhood, the barefoot running, the altitude, the diet, the role models, the simple approach to training, the running camps, the focus and dedication, the desire to succeed, to change their lives, the expectation that they can win, the mental toughness, the lack of alternatives, the abundance of trails to train on, the time spent resting, the running to school, the all-persuasive running culture, the reverence for running."I love the construction of the story: instead of formulating this list and studying the factors, it's the reverse that happens - Finn encounters each of these factors in turn in his daily life and training and then thinks, hmmm, that's another thing to add to the list. Well done.One disappointing note in the book is Finn's admission of an odd gap in his knowledge of running history and culture. It involves a neat serendipity in his book: one of his co-runners in Iten is a "young American student named Anders" (we're never told his surname although - hint - it's 'Samuelson') Eventually, he "work[s] out that Anders' mother is Joan Benoit"...a fact not easy for Finn to work out because he gets a jumbled tale from his host, Godfrey, and - unstated - Anders is a humble kid (the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree).Later, upon the occasion of a visit to Iten by "Anders' Mom," Finn relates that "not knowing much about her career, I looked her up on the Internet and managed to find a video of her Olympic victory in 1984." He then proceeds to school his readers about her 'amazing' breakaway run in which she "plow[ed] on with a look of steel on her face..." Huh? By most accounts the seminal event in the history women's running and you have to look it up on the Internet to see what it was about? Seriously? Then, two pages later he recounts an episode with her while driving in Iten and describes her as a "small, elderly white woman with short gray hair." Elderly? Joan Benoit Samuelson is an attractive, 55-year-old woman who, yes, wears her hair short and naturally gray.That irritation aside, "Running with the Kenyans" is a delightful book. Anyone with an interest in sport should pick it up.

I thoroughly enjoyed the highly readable Canary book. I’ll disclose here that I worked with the author during her studies in Alaska, and continue to admire her in this new effort in communicating science so broadly.Dr. Oakes tells her compelling story of a scientist who explores the long-term changes ecological changes and social impacts of an Alaskan forest directly affected by climate change. There’s no need to speculate about possible future changes wrought by climate, the yellow-cedar forests that she studies have already been highly altered, and now appear as broad landscapes of dead skeleton trees.The author has obvious credibility, given her remote and grueling field studies in the wilds of Alaska, her publishing in top scientific journals, and perhaps especially in her open and honest writing style for this book. The Canary gives a personal glimpse behind the scenes of science.Graduate students and young scientists would benefit by her narratives on selecting a meaningful research topic, adapting to the many challenges and setbacks of pulling off field studies, and bringing research to fruition.The Canary is an excellent choice for book groups or readers interested in the people and landscapes of coastal Alaska. Particularly notable is a section on how a diverse group of Alaskans value the yellow-cedar tree, mourn its losses, and comment variously on what could be done to assist in its survival.I feel more optimistic just knowing that there is a new generation of people like Dr. Oakes to guide us forward in a changing world.

This is my favorite genre, and Oakes sits with the best of them! I'm thrilled to have discovered her work and thoroughly enjoyed every page, every step, she brought me on through her journey to understand how our world is changing and how it affects us. She brings Alaska to life with beautiful imagery and multi-dimensional characters while at the same time showing how the story of the Yellow Cedar is a story for the world. It's a book that makes one rethink any automatic reaction to the phrase "climate change." Oakes deals with this complexity with grace, humility, and humor. I'm excited to read it again!

Amidst all the gloom about climate change, this book offers a surprisingly change, this book offers a surprisingly hopeful perspective by describing how both a tree species and the people who rely on it in southeast Alaska have adapted to rising average temperatures.The book is a great mix of ecology, social science and personal narrative. I've never been to Alaska's outer coast, but I can now imagine the challenges of doing fieldwork (or really anything) there. I also appreciated how the author started with a focused view of her own work and then broadens to a more general discussion of adaptation to climate changeRecommend this for anyone interested in ecology, Alaska, PhD students trying to find their way and really anyone who wants a climate change story that goes beyond "its happening and its bad"

This is really a project book more than general techniques. It is not as well put together as some others, such as Donna Kato's work, and Christie Friesen.

The photos in the book or not formatted properly and were blurry and distorted. Content is nothing you can't find on the Internet for free.Very disappointed and not worth the money.

Not sure what I expected but maybe not this. I really wasn't looking for a crash course on polymer clay food etc so maybe that affects my opinion. Some small items of interest but not what I was really interested in.

This book was interesting to read, held my attention from start to finish. However, needs better editorializing. Many errors of typographical nature found. Could use better proofreading.But overall, taught me a lot about miniatures, may use these lessons to make something of my own, as I've always enjoyed finding something surprising when opening a box, book, or small container. Right up my alley!!

I'm more interested in caning and big projects, so I'm glad this was a kindle unlimited and I got to read it for fee as non of the projects were for me. It all depends on your taste. I'm sure she is a great artist and teacher. It just wasn't for me

Great book, and it arrived ahead of schedule!

Very good book. It covers the ins and outs. But it's the tip of the iceberg. I could add: Your immune system is the problem. Candida is an effect of something else, not a cause. They key lies in your Adrenals. If they are damaged, there goes your immune system's ability to fight Candida. Candida is like a cold. It's not really an illness in itself, rather, a way in which your body warns you to slow down. Your body warns you by stages. Candida could be considered stage 2. Don't let yourself get so immuno-compromized that you get to stage 3 (because it could be Crohn's or Cancer).A lot of people think they go on this diet for a year or two, and then all is well and we can dive right back into the world of McDonald's, ice-cream and booze. It's like a cocaine addict saying "I'll get clean for a year or two." The fact is: Your body didn't like the ice-cream, fast food and boooze because it was NEVER MEANT to have it. If your car needs 93 octane and you give it 80 it will work at first, then it will start to knock, and eventually you'll damage it. And if you give it 100 octane, you'll burn it. Same goes for your body, pal. If you can no longer tolerate Candida (plain old yeast), it means that YOU NEVER WILL AGAIN (and you never really did, so it was just a matter of time before something went wrong). That is what this book fails to tell you. You have been consuming yeast and refined sugar all your life and you never should have. I read this book from cover to cover recently and found it very helpful. Most of the books out there on Candida are written by doctors and they write about what they know NOT what you need to know. The authors spent a lot of time including the tidbits of knowledge that you won't find anywhere else and the book is truly geared toward helping solve the entire problem. I have read all of the other books on this topic and this one is much more helpful and resourceful. Thanks.

Like others I was duped into being this on false advertising. It is not harry Potter, not even close. It is written for a very young audience. I would have liked this in sixth grade. The characters and never developed. The story doesn't have a complex quest or overarching good vs evil. There is just young innocents and evil. I would not have minded much as I can read anything with magic or fantasy. But to be tricked into buying this perhaps even lied to is an insult. This is no Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, insert your favorite fantasy here. This is more like the hardy boys find a bad school or the diary of a wimpy kid sees a scary clown. Want an intro to fantasy, read the Hobbit.

This book was a bit slower to get through as there was more back story to the characters and glimpses into their past. I was frustrated with all the different Pov as I would read a chapter from Harley's point pv view and the next chapter was someone else. I felt disconnected and this style of writing does not work for me. I found myself skimming the chapter to get back to Harley. The action picked up towards the end and I hope the next one in the series uncovers more about Katherine's plans and how she is always one step ahead of Harley, talk about family feuds.

This tugged at my heart strings, made me vibrate with adrenaline, and bite my nails with anticipation. You won't be able to stop from the moment you start the first page! I had to keep checking the status of pages read to make sure I wasn't about to hit the end. Thankfully it kept going when I feared terribly painful cliffhangers. I'm so excited we don't have long to wait for the next!!!

The story concept & story is intriguing enough that I put up with this garbage writing for 3.5 books. If your looking for paperback novel quality without even a steamy make-out session as pay off, by all means, be my guest.For more stars, the author needs to expand her vocabulary, pay much closer attention to time, and mind character details better. I feel like she needed about 4 more edits to have a quality story.

Harley & her associates continue with their bad language, impulsive behavior, stupid actions that somehow manage to come more or less right in the end. Not sure this book, or others in the series, are a good example for young people. Harley regularly flouts authority and "gets away with it", never really being punished. That said, it is fun to read how the clues get put together and will be interesting to see how the story finally ends .... if it ever does.

Bella Forest delivers, again, a tightly woven suspense filled mystery. The world she sends us to smells, feels, sounds and looks, mostly, like our world. The magical world is well thought out, fun and interesting. I enjoyed the first book. I loved the second one and I can’t wait for the next one. The rag team is one I hope to read about again and again.

I am in love with this series!!! First book done in a weekend, this one done in a little less than 24 hours (I forced myself to sleep and work). I wish I could make them last longer but I just can't stop reading. I can't wait for the next one to come out and hope we get many more stories with Harley and Wade and the "rag team"!! 💖💖💖💖

I love how Harley is coming into her own and fitting in with her magical group. Her and Wade.... Im waiting for more heat, tha same goes for Tatyana and Dylan. It seems like even Santana might have a budding interest in Raffe? Time will tell.
