The accuracy of prices were good in the book, but general information was lacking. Could be much better with hikes, maps and direction as well as more off the beaten path things to do in areas. All of the best places we found were from word of mouth, and were not listed in the book even though they were popular spots (visited by locals and expats in major tourist destinations). We spent a total of 2 weeks in the northern parts of Costa Rica and peninsular. The lonely planet guide let us down this time - overall I have found these guidebooks to be very good, just not the one for Costa Rica.

Lonely Planet guide books are the standard, in spite of the small print, focus on commercial establishments, and authorship by hip tourists rather than knowledgable locals. All these held true for the Costa Rica edition. Still, it's the standard, and if you are going to take one guide book, I suspect this will be the one. It is after all a terrible amount of work to collect and keep updated such a large body of material in a rapidly changing world.I use guidebooks to select regions, but seldom to select lodgings. I find that having a print guide is especially helpful in areas with limited connectivity, and even brief descriptions together with costs (important to me!) allow me to prioritize destinations and itineraries. In the event of a travel emergency, of course, such a guide is a lifesaver (not literally, just literarily.)

Poor quality printing. Does have a lot of history that Frommer's doesn't have. Not nearly the guide book Frommer's is. Lonely Planet seems to concentrate on hotels, eating places and night life while Frommer's is far superior in describing attractions and things to do.

Well studied and documented with accurate insights, this guide was indispensable on our trip. Everything was true to the areas we traveled and we enjoyed our trip so much more having been able to navigate directly to the most authentic spots, the best restaurants (all-in or on a budget) and the most beautiful off-the-beaten-path places. We also love the information they include as asides so we better understand what's going on in the area, which gave us talking points with locals on palm oil plantations, insights on the region and local cultures, etc. As always, the Lonely Guide delivers.

Spent 2 weeks in Costa Rica. This book was a godsend! Between this book, a waterproof map waterproof backpack & a booklet of wildlife we were set! Great detail on where to go & what to see. But don't forget to ask the locals too!

We bought this before staying in Uvita for about two weeks in the fall of 2017. We rented a car and did a lot of driving to other parts of the country, and this book was really cool to have with us along the way at different times when we were trying to decide where to go and what to do. All of the advice contained therein was accurate and concise. Format is cool and easy to find things. No complaints.

Have read every page for upcoming trip and made reservations a breeze, as we have never been to Costa Rica previously

I loved the layout- information was divided into sections of the country. The information and maps were up to date which was a plus. Make sure you keep the publishing date in mind when using the travel guides because things are constantly changing. I'm glad I had this with me on my trip.

I would definitely recommend this book to a friend. It has everything one needs to know when planning a trip to Colorado.I liked the places you can go to see the cliff dwellings and where it talks about the Anasazi Indians being the first settlers. I enjoyed the whole book as there is so much to see and do in Colorado and this gives you all the info needed.Jack Chekijian is the narrator of this guidebook and he does a great job and speaks clearly.Yes. I love the Rocky Mountains and several other places that the book talked about.

I am ambivalent about this book. The parts about Mei Lien and her family 100 years ago are gripping and very well written. The modern-day events often made me think I was reading something slightly above a harlequin novel. The characters felt flat and the modern-day plot would have been at home in a romance novel (minus the bodice-ripping.) Inara's agonizing that she cannot tell Daniel and his family about her ancestor's actions seemed especially contrived. This could have been a great novel if Estes had just stuck with the long-ago story. Such great characters to build on! How about telling us the life story of the child instead of the Inara story - that could have been riveting! A great editor could have coaxed a great novel out of this, because the raw material and skill is clearly there. Instead, we got great history and - forgive me - sappy presence. I really would like to give 3.5 stars, but that is not possible, so I'm going with three - because in my book, it does not rise to the level of 4 stars because of the modern-day part.I appreciate Estes shining a bright light on the way the Chinese were treated in the late 19th century.

The storyline is good enough. I wish the story itself weren't so depressing, but not all stories can have happy endings, and I accept that.The thing that really kept this from being a good book, in my opinion, was the lack of character development. I had no sense of Inara's or Daniel's personalities, or even what they looked like. Inara's dad was a jerk, but that was never addressed, and Inara didn't even seem to realize it. I found their romance to be ridiculously fast-paced and disappointingly bland. Not really knowing the characters, I was unable to get emotinally attached to them, which just made the dating part so boring.The modern-day ortion of the book was boring and trite...the historical part was interesting at first, but then became so tragic, I was tempted to just stop reading. The lack of character development actually helped in that area, as I was able to separate myself from the worst, saddest part.The storyline is interesting, though. With better story-telling, this could be a great book.

I can't even begin to say how much I loved this book. It brought out emotions in me that I never would have expected. This is the story of a young Chinese-American woman whose family is forced to leave the United States. All the Chinese in Seattle, US citizens or not, are rounded up one morning and made to buy passage on a ship that's said to be heading to China. (Sounds similar to current events in the United States.) It isn't. Overhearing a conversation between the ship's owner and it's captain, the girl rushes to tell her father the fate that awaits them, and it's not a good one. He takes action and makes her jump into the water in the hope that at least she will survive and make it back to land. She's seen "falling overboard" and rescued by a kind and caring man who takes her back to his farm and nurses her back to health. In time, they marry and lead a fairly happy life, having a child. Water, however, is always a malevolent character in this story.The take of Mei Lein is juxtaposed with that of Inara Erickson. Inara has just received finished school with a degree in International Business and has recently inherited the family's estate on Orca Island off the coast of Seattle. While her father insists she take a job with Starbucks, Inara has other ideas, wanting to develop the estate into a luxury, specialty hotel. While on the island, she discovers a loosened stair tread. Curious, she moves it away and discovers a small package wrapped in fabric. She opens the package and discovers a silk sleeve with remarkable embroiders. She researches this unusual finding online and discovers a professor at a nearby university who specializes in such things. She seeks him out and, as easily as that, the story blooms into a full and fulfilling book.This book did what few can, it made me cry, deep, bone-shaking sobs, and made me miss my parents more that I can say.If you want to read an excellent novel, filled with true emotion and history that may well be repeating itself, this is the one.

Interesting but disturbing info about the mistreatment of Chinese in early Seattle, however, the story in the novel was only fair. The writing was uninspiring and the ending predictable. I finished the book because it was for my book club but I skimmed over entire paragraphs to get to the ending.The author based her story on her findings of the murder of several Chinese during the forcible removal of Chinese from the west coast. She extrapolated this into the murder of an entire boat-load.of Chinese. I thought that might be a stretch. However, the treatment of the Chinese girl, Mei Lein, who was left behind rang tragically true and I am reminded that our history includes some deplorable events.I don't regret reading the book but would hardly call it "brilliant" as the did the Amazon review.

On one hand this book was a page turner and a quick and easy read. On the other hand it was predictable and often far fetched. I found it unbelievable that a whole life could be depicted in embroidery, even with face recognition, etc. Mei Lin's struggle with her illness toward the end also was not believable. In the present time, I also had trouble with the whole renovation project, how quickly it came about without detailed planning, etc. There were also too many far fetched coincidences. Overall, it's a good, entertaining book to read.

I read alot I started this book and I couldn't put it down. I spent my whole life here in Seattle area I grew up on Beacon Hill my father worked in resurants in and around Pioneer square. My family has ties to Chinatown it was an amazing story. The characters jumped off the pages like you were in story. This is the kind of story you wait until a great storm is coming then you snuggle down in your recliner with a throw and hot cup of tea and read until you finish you wont be able to put it down.

I am a college adjunct faculty English teacher and I wanted a simple edition with notes for my class to read in the fall. I was going to order 20 of these for the class, but I am so glad I first bought one for myself. The paper edition doesn't have any spaces between the speakers, either, so it is difficult to read, even if it were written in language my students, mostly college freshmen, could easily understand. They would give up on this edition. Also, there are absolutely NO NOTES for students that define and explain some of the more obscure vocabulary and written expressions. The text underneath this edition on Amazon did NOT say that there were no notes. It is not helpful AT ALL for a new reader of Shakespeare or a reader who only read it in high school unwillingly. I am going to order something else for my class.

As noted by other reviewers, this edition provides but a fraction of what it promises. There are no annotations, no photographs — a historical impossibility of monumental absurdity — of the author, nor any of the other promised features. Beyond that, it does not even include a dramatis personnae, a hallowed standard for any dramatic work. Even the ratings provided by Kindle were for other Shakespeare plays. ... Is there no quality control for works published by Kindle? This was such a sham that it makes me very leery about future purchases from Kindle, especially for editions with which I am not familiar.

This is probably the worst book I've ever received. Characters are not marked. There is no formatting. It is just a wall of text. Don't buy this. Get a different copy of this play.

When I saw Romeo & Juliet in the theatre -- on its opening weekend -- after the film in the lobby I saw dozens of teenaged girls sobbing in each other's arms. I've never seen anything like that before or since. That alone marks the film as a masterpiece, and nothing any critic can say is relevant next to that emotional reaction. Those sobbing teenagers are absolute proof that any critic who panned this film is a fool.Di'Caprio wasn't very famous at that point (though I believe he'd already been nominated for an oscar for an indy film). Later that night, I had dinner with friends and predicted that this boy would become the biggest star in Hollywood -- by tomorrow! I was off by a couple of years. We, as a class, will read a portion of the play and then I will show this film to help cement ideas, dialogue, and characters. The students love the film, laugh, and respond better to the play than without!

I did not want to see this movie for years after its release. I consider myself a purist where the Bard of Avon is concerned. I adored the films Henry V & Much Ado About Nothing, both directed and starring Kenneth Branaugh, Richard III starring and directed by Olivier. Period costumes, true to Shakespeare's lines, etc. I began to change when I realized (fairly early on in watching it) that 10 Things I Hate About You, was a delightful retelling of The Taming Of The Shrew. Eventually I watched this and found a gem. From the factions portrayed as rival gangs, to the outstanding delivery of the lines. The true crowning jewel is the over the top performance by the inimitable John Leguizamo. As Tibalt, John is amazing.

I cannot say too many good things about the dealer and this book to do it justice, it is written in such a way that even a beginner will leave knowing all of the inner workings of the computer, it also gives the reader historical information that is both interesting and educational, the book consists of written material, diagrams and photos, which when combined makes it easy to learn a lot about the computer

I'm a professional programmer and I wanted a book to brush up on the hardware knowledge I learned back in college. I found this book to be an appropriate level for what I wanted and I enjoyed the real world examples, diagrams and clear neature. My only complaint is that it could use an updated edition with some of the more modern architectures.

This book wonderfully breaks down computer architecture into bite sized chunks. Also a very enjoyable read. Very good to read before you take a course on computer architecture. My book came in very good condition.

I liked the simplicity in the book. It is very easy to read and understand things written on it. I classify the book as introductory level in computer architecture giving an overview on the today's microprocessors. I would recommend it for those who want to learn something about microprocessors on their own, outside the class or want to read some brief details about the most current microprocessors (i.e. Core 2 Duo) or architectural comparison between different microarchitectures (i.e. IBM and Intel cores).I don't think that the book is good as a text book for computer architecture. Instead I would recommend the Hennessy and Patterson "Computer Architecture - Quantitative Approach"I personelly enjoyed reading this book.

Great intro to the hardware aspects of a CPU.Goes into great detail on optimizations of modern CPUs.Highly detailed.

I started with very limited understanding of computer architecture. What I had was a jumble of marketing terms I had picked up from reading popular PC magazines. This book helped me understand the basics of computer architecture, and quickly took me on a fun and insightful tour of major 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.I have gained enough understanding from this book to move on to more quantitative treatments of processor design.

Bought for my son as he is interested in learning about PCs under the hood. Exceeded his expectations in tandem with But How Do It Know? Together both books have piqued his curiosity and satisfied his questions.

High quality paper, clean and neat exercises to learn cursive, also plenty of extra practice pages. Just what I was hoping for. Only one tiny bit of feedback...I would have liked to have seen more sentence practice in it. If a kid is old enough to learn cursive, then they have a larger vocabulary than what's shown here. It only gives them very basic words to use as if it's trying to be a younger grade primer for learning vocabulary. Other than that, it's exactly what I was hoping for my grandson who badly wants to learn cursive since it's sadly not taught in schools anymore. And yes, I do write training materials myself, so I am a little bit critical here.

This book had a page for each letter, first to trace, then lines to write your own. It has an example of each letter with the numbered dots and directional arrows.Once you get through the alphabet, there are words and then sentences to trace and practice on your own.

Bought this for my granddaughter, who will start penmanship in the 3rd grade. Excellent, easy to follow book for beginners. I can't believe our school systems don't want to teach our children long hand penmanship. I feel that's a big mistake. I'm glad I found a book like this, so my granddaughter can have beautiful hand-writing.

I'm using this to teach my 8 year-old cursive, since they don't teach this in public school until 4th grade. It is very helpful because it provides the arrows on how to properly write the letters. I also purchased a blank pad so that he can continue to practice, as there is not a lot of practice space in the book. Overall, I would definitely suggest this book.

This booklet has lots of practice sheets. My 5 year old found it entertaining as she was interested in learning cursive writing. I think it's a great buy if you are looking to teach a child how to write cursive as the child can use this booklet autonomously. Great price and quality with plenty of activities to practice.

The material is good for a student that already knows cursive, but it doesn't really teach the steps to each letter very well. Otherwise, it's great practice material, though, and cute illustrations.

Bought this book for my daughter to help her practice her cursive since it is not taught in school anymore. She liked it and has been using it like crazy. She liked that the fact the it had long letter words that helps her but all the letters together.

Since cursive has been a backburner in my daughter's school, we got her this. (She wanted to learn cursive) it has helped her learn quite a bit.

About the Author

Lizabeth A. Allison is Chancellor Professor of Biology at the College of William & Mary. She received her Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Washington, specializing in molecular and cellular biology. Before coming to William & Mary, she spent eight years as a faculty member at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. Liz teaches introductory biology for majors and upper-division molecular biology courses. She has mentored graduate students and more than 100 undergraduate research students, many of them coauthoring papers with her on intracellular trafficking of the thyroid hormone receptor in normal and cancer cells. The recipient of numerous awards, including a State Council for Higher Education in Virginia (SCHEV) Outstanding Faculty Award in 2009, Liz received one of the three inaugural Arts & Sciences Faculty Awards for Teaching Excellence in 2011, and a Plumeri Award for Faculty Excellence in 2012. In addition to her work on this text, she is author of Fundamental Molecular Biology, now in its second edition, with a third edition underway.   Michael Black received his Ph.D. in Microbiology & Immunology from Stanford University School of Medicine as a Howard Hughes Predoctoral Fellow. After graduation, he studied cell biology as a Burroughs Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellow at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. His current research focuses on the use of molecules to identify and track the transmission of microbes in the environment. Michael is a professor of Cell & Molecular Biology at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, where he teaches introductory and advanced classes for majors in cell biology and microbiology. In addition to his teaching and research activities, Michael serves as the director of the Undergraduate Biotechnology Lab, where he works alongside undergraduate technicians to integrate research projects and inquiry-based activities into undergraduate classes.   Jeff Carmichael received his B.S. in Biology from Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and his Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of Georgia. His graduate work focused on sexual reproduction in an intriguing group of seed plants. Scott’s current research focuses on how active learning affects student learning and academic performance.   Greg Podgorski received his Ph.D. in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Penn State University and has been a postdoctoral fellow at the Max Plank Institute for Biochemistry and Columbia University. His research interests are in biology education, developmental genetics, and computational biology. Greg’s most recent work has been in mathematical modeling of how patterns of different cell types emerge during development and how tumors recruit new blood vessels in cancer. I just took BIO 180 at the University of Washington for which this book was required. I have to say that although this was an expensive book, it is more than worth the money dropped. You can use it for all of the introductory Biology courses (180, 200, 220) and it's also a great book for satisfying personal curiosities about other topics in biology.The best part about this book is that it is impeccably organized and thorough. You will not get lost in dry, confusing blocks of text and there are chapter summaries which are great to include in your notes. I used the book extensively for the course that I took. As I continue through the series I will definitely hold onto this book.One quick note: the study guide is virtually a repetition of the chapter summaries and was not that helpful, so don't waste money on that. :o)

The book did not come as advertised, there was no eText Access Card included and now I have to buy one for 66$ from the textbook site. Do not buy if you expect to receive an access card because it wont come with the book.

This is a very good biology textbook. It reads easily and presents the material in a clear, organized manner. The MasteringBiology online quizzes and interactive exercises that accompany this book are unquestionably the most useful online learning tools that I've ever used. They are far more helpful than any online learning tools that I used in the course of three calculus classes, two physics classes, or four chemistry classes. If you are assigned this text, do yourself a favor and actually read it. You will learn. And make it a point to use the online tools that come with it. They WILL aid in your mastery of the material and improve your grades on your exams.

This textbook served as an excellent supplement to my biology professor's lectures. Although I was fortunate to have a great biology professor who loves teaching, certain concepts need to be thoroughly studied by oneself in order to actually understand them. This book had excellent explanations in a readable font and very colorful pictures and diagrams that served as alternate explanations for difficult subjects. I also appreciated the inclusion of a small chapter summary and review at the end of each chapter to reinforce difficult concepts. Overall, this was a very useful textbook and it actually made bland subjects very interesting.

I was suppose to buy a newer edition of this book for one of my collage classes, but this one is only different buy a few page numbers the rest of the information is the same. Buying the saved over 100 dollars getting this edition. Never buy a newer edition if you can avoid it because you save a ton of money. You will do a little bit of looking if you our trying to find something but it isn't that hard. buy this edition and go and spend the money you save on something you would like you will fill so much better at the end of the day.

I've only been using this book for 2 weeks and I already enjoy it, which is a big thing to say for a textbook. The last general bio book I had was full of information that drowned out the overall point each section within the chapter was trying to bring. It was full of biochem and technical talk that wasn't needed for this level of class.Freeman's book brings a refreshing approach to writing about biology. Each chapter and section within each chapter, provides the student with the "meat and bones" of what they need to know. It's not hard to comprehend the take home message and to see how each little component adds up to make a larger component. This book has made me love biology again and understand why I returned to school. Good job Scott Freeman!

Great book. Really enjoyed it. For a science textbook, it's not that "word-y." I actually had the Professor who is the author, and how he teaches is kind of like what this book does: it seeks to clarify, not muddle; brevity and concise for maximum understanding. Also has great illustrations. I wouldn't completely rely on only this textbook to learn everything about Biology, but this is a great start.Also for future UW students: No, I did not have to buy MasteringBiology. Um the current version of this text book is like $300. So thank you for saving me basically an entire car payment. Text book companies are evil, and I am a broke first generation college student. Thank you for not being evil. Now I know what a phospholipid bilayer is and can throw it into conversation at dinner with my parents so they know maybe college isn’t a total money pit.
