This book is a wonderfully detailed account of a needless tragedy. Faulty design, bad science, poor engineering, lack of oversight, and some extremely bad decisions all contributed to the deaths of these unfortunate men. To say " I couldn't put this book down" is an understatement. The author brings you right into the tunnel with these men. You can actually feel the cold, the dampness, and the cramped, claustrophobic conditions that they had to endure. Highly recommended.

The story provides a snapshot of the five men who accepted the challenge of meeting the requirements of so many government agencies to accomplish a difficult task. The book is an example of the lack of flexability and understanding of government officials tasked to oversee projects which they don't understand. Equally responsible for the disaster and success of the outcome is the workings of big business. Delegation of authority and lack of responsibility appeared regularly as each obsticle was approached. The waste of tax payer money to complete the harbor clean up project in Boston shows how good men can get caught up in taking chances, disreguarding safety and accepting risks which they knew were not reasonable. Luck was depended on to get each part of the job done.After the disaster the lives of the remaining crew were presented with the examples of how some overcame events and memories and others failed and suffered as well as those that were close to them.The book provides a great factual timeline with major evolutions fully discussed and leaves the reader to draw their own opinions as to who was at fault.

I stumbled upon this book after researching the Deer Island treatment plant, as I have a fascination with all things engineering and infrastructure. The engineering feat of the outfall was impressive and when I learned that 2 divers died inside a dry tunnel, I needed more answers. Naturally it led me to this book and I couldn't put it down. I often look at structures we use everyday; that people may have lost their lives building. I think of how tragic it is that their sacrifice often goes unnoticed, while we just drive over a bridge to get to work. This book pays respect to all of those people. I think Neil did a great job of capturing the personalities of the people in the story and you feel a personal connection with them. And let's not forget the depictions of the fascinating engineering that needed to take place to foster this disaster. It's a fantastic book, it should be a must read for anyone in engineering, construction diving, project management etc.

This was an interesting read and turned out to be something a little different than what I'd expected. My expectation was a book about a harrowing mission gone bad and the rescue of the workers in the tunnel. Well, of course it was that, but that part of the story was the smallest part of the book. Swidey spent most of his narrative laying the back story and aftermath out in detail. And that's what made the book interesting. The construction efforts and story of the tunnel, the divers and project managers, etc. were/are all interesting characters, and how the events of the failed assignment affected all of them. Turned out to be a very compelling story, and tragic in terms of how the people's lives were impacted by what happened in the tunnel. All in all this was a very readable and interesting story, mostly about people's lives before and after the tragedy, and well worth the read.

As others have remarked, this book is a page turner. Most of the credit goes to the writer who clearly knows his craft.The storyline is not new. Worker safety taking a back seat to other priorities, lax governance, shirking responsibility, wishful thinking, incompetence, and arrogance. The physical set-up is unique (9 mile construction tunnel under 100+ swf), but whether workers are killed in mines, building dams, offshore oil rigs, related factors collude to create catastrophic events including deaths. And "ordinary heroes" as quoted in the book may draw the short end of the stick.In less capable hands, the story could easily have been matter-of-fact, monotone, factual, but void of spirit. The author, through extensive interviews and leg work, brings the characters to life. Workers become pawns in games played by competing factions, big and small. And we invariably root for the five divers, two of whom perish in the tunnel due to inadequate equipment and safety procedures. And Massachusetts lacks effective criminal means to prosecute such potential wrong-doings, still as the author noted in the epilogue. A familiar state of affair in many parts of the world.

My dad called me and told me to read this book. Donald (one of the divers) had worked with my family in Idaho before he went on to become a diver. Donald had a rye sense of humor and a solid human. He was wonderfully entertaining to a little kid around the property. Somehow, we always kept track of Donald as he progressed through life. As for the book, it was well written. The depth of research and writing was fantastic. Extraordinary what situation the divers were put into and how they survived. Many of the reviews are much more detailed. Read their reviews then, read this book.

Great trilogy I really recommending this books 📚 the moment I start reading the story it's hard to stop. Filing 😞 because the end of the story

Happy because I love the women of this series! They are strong, empowered and loving. Their adventures have been so much fun to follow. From a nurse to a tough as nails ex-army sergeant, they all come together to overcome the darkness. They fall in love and build lives together, while danger lurks in the darkness. If you have read the other two installments, you probably feel the same way I do, I love these stories and wanna have these women as my friends! Now to the sad part. When you find an author that can captivate you and make you feel as if you are living the story with her characters, you will be sad to read “The End”! KC has built a world that scares you at first, but then makes you want to be a part of it. Rebuilding and finding ways to survive, the women in this trilogy draw you into their world, learning and loving with them! I have enjoyed their adventures and I am sad to see their stories end. I wanna celebrate their successes with them and see where life takes them. But KC has to move on to her other projects and leave the ladies of the Darkness trilogy (hopefully not forever) behind. I enjoyed this series and I will reread it several time, I’m sure. Thanks for taking us on this ride, KC!

I waited till this book came out to read this series and it was definitely worth it!!! This is a story to read and I totally loved it. There is so much that was great to read about. The characters had depth and so loving. The second chance Lexi and Anna got was wonderful. At a time when things were scary the characters stuck together to get things done. I loved the series so much I recommend it to one of my Aunts, we tend to like the same kind of books, well non lesfic ones but I think this series can be read by anyone. It has so much in it. So I would recommend reading this series and this book, but start at Darkness Falls. Enjoy!

I really don't want this story to end. This book is the third of a trilogy and from word 1, book 1 I have been immersed in an adventure of women surviving what seemed like the end of the world. While I hope it never happens in reality, this story is very plausible and entirely entertaining. I cheered the characters on and cried with them at times. It truly is a happily ever after tale.

A very satisfying end to Anna & Lexi and Taylor & Jackie's story. The four of them, with Alice, traveled through Washington state to arrive in Astoria. Which, was the oldest city on the West Coast. The story continues with people hearing about the safety and provision in Astoria and with new people there is tension and fear. KC Luck weaves the story through overcrowding, a health crisis, panic at the fear of outsiders, and it's a beautiful story.Read this story and the first two books in the series and be amazed with great storytelling.

Will KC this was an excellent story. I am happy that the bad guy got it with a frying pan - love Alice! Meg and Grace and Henry and Shauna made wonderful additions. Hoping for the prequel with Alice and Charlie. Thanks for all of the hard work and effort! Lisa Tina

I must have been living under a rock when Molly Bloom’s story came out because it wasn’t until I saw the movie Molly’s Game that I heard about her. Then I came straight home and read her book MOLLY’S GAME: THE TRUE STORY OF THE 26-YEAR OLD WOMAN BEHIND THE MOST EXCLUSIVE, HIGH-STAKES UNDERGROUND POKER GAME IN THE WORLD like my life depended on it. Ok, wow. Molly’s got game and then some. Here is what I can tell you because, no spoilers. Plus, Molly is the storyteller here.Molly comes from a family of high achievers. She is no slouch. A champion skier, brains to match, fresh out of college with plans to attend law school. She has been on the go since she was a little girl and wants a break in between. Her parents don’t agree. She heads to LA, on her own, and lands jobs to pay the bills that lead to her first poker game with the big boys and she likes what she sees. Molly is not a gambler, nor does she have any interest in the game. It is all about the connections and she knows an opportunity for a legitimate business is looking right at her.With equal parts passion and drive, Molly achieves more than she imagined. Then things came to a crashing halt. Find out what happens after that. I have much respect for her. She is protective of people, to a fault, and most likely you will come away from the book, with a very, very bad taste for some people, who are named. As Molly tells her story, you will be turning pages as fast as a dealer pitches cards in the air.

Saw the movie before reading the book. I must say that as usual, I should have read the book first then see the movie. Nevertheless, the book is much better and gave more details and actual people than the movie. Jessica Chastain is a great actress. Her body of work is a testament to her talent. All in all, the book written by the actual Molly Bloom is a joy to read. I learned a bit about poker but really, I don’t gamble so it’s for knowledge only.

Molly’s Game by Molly Bloom is, from the author’s point of view, a true account of one woman’s remarkable ability to see opportunity and innovatively carve her own empire out of a niche previously dominated by males. Many of the males were hustlers, conmen, professional poker players, and members of criminal enterprises such as the Mafia or the Russian Mob. While male members of the mentioned groups all seem to have shadowy or incomplete backgrounds with little regard for anything described as a moral compass, Bloom decided to take a higher road. She did not employ criminal enforcers to collect a player debt. She did not resort to vicious gossip strategies to destroy the reputations of reluctant payers. She took a more relaxed, feminine approach. She simply cut off their rights to play. Sounds like a stern Mommy figure.Why should she be telling the truth in this novel? We don’t completely know that she is but we have indications that lead one to believe what she has said/written is the truth. Without an independent investigation, we might never know if some things were left out. Lying by omission is still lying. This is a work of non-fiction. There are names of high-profile celebrities, sports figures, and wealthy businessmen which can aid those who want to investigate further to corroborate or refute information Bloom claims. For me, Bloom’s credibility rings true after a look at the final plea agreement and sentence imposed. Some in the judicial system believed her because the only jail time Bloom served after initial arrest was while she was waiting for bail to be posted.Many people do not realize that in a nation with fifty states and a federal system there are at least fifty-one systems of law that cover different activities, in this case, gambling. Violation of federal rules brings a suspect into a federal court anywhere in the United States. A person can violate State law and be brought into State court but there are fifty different standards which are why lawyers pass State licensing requirements. Bloom consulted lawyers and was careful not to violate laws against illegal gambling. She did not take a portion of winnings (gambling term: “the rake”). She did not charge management fees. Those kinds of things might be illegal. She did, however, accept gifts or tips. Essentially, Molly Bloom was an event organizer.Bloom does not write of her plea bargain as far as probation, community service, or fines. For that, go to Wikipedia and the sources listed at the bottom of the Wikipedia page. As with others who deal in vast sums of cash money (millions) Bloom seems to have attracted the notice of the IRS. The fine levied against her was small compared to the cash flow she indicates took place during her event organizing. Any account of dealing with the IRS belongs in my favorite genre: Horror.Bloom recounts her childhood in a family of superstars, super performers, and a controlling, demanding father. Molly claims that she just wanted to be acknowledged as being good in her own right. Placing on an Olympic Ski team might seem worthy of accolades. This memoir reveals that her accomplishment, after recovering from serious disabling surgery such that doctors said she could not do what she in fact accomplished, did not garner the positive reinforcement she desired. She decided to listen to a different drummer.I found her story amazing. There is no course or set of instructions she could follow to accomplish what she did. It was personal bravado, persistence, and chutzpah that allowed her to succeed. What brought her down was a combination of petty jealousy and true criminal activity on the part of some of her acquaintances. She was truly judged on the basis of the company she kept. I gave this four Amazon stars.

Absolutely loved this book. I saw the movie first with my family and we all left the theatre completely obsessed with Molly Bloom. We spent the entire dinner afterwards reading her entire Wikipedia page and that night I bought the book on kindle. I wholeheartedly recommend this book - it was an incredible story full of power dynamics and strong boss ladies. It's impossibly to not become fully engrossed in Molly Bloom's story!

Molly's Game was an easy and interesting read about Molly's unexpected but skillfully managed rise to the top of the private poker world in LA and NYC. The book's title however should have instead been Molly's Cautionary Tale since it was very apparent that Molly put herself in the middle of a world of greed and materialism where she was in way over her head and very fortunate to have survived with her life (although almost didn't!). In doing so she sold her soul and ultimately became consumed by greed and materialism. The FBI indirectly did her a huge favor by pulling her out of the middle of a world where it was destined to not end well for Molly. Hopefully this will serve as a major wake up call for Molly so she can now use her considerable talents to do good in the community as an executive director for a non-profit organization serving the disenfranchised rather than wasting her time managing poker games for the morally bankrupt rich and famous.

This book gives details to help any homeschooling mom. I recommend it to anyone who is homeschooling or thinking about homeschooling. I raised 3 sons on homeschooling. I recognized a lot of what Amber Fox is talking about. She does have a lot of ideas and plans that I had never thought of. I had no choice but to home-school my sons because we were missionaries. It was the most rewarding time. I learned so much teaching. Thank you Amber for your ideas and work.

Its full of practical advice, no nonsense included! I would recommend this book to all housewives, whether they work away from or stay home, homeschool or not. While the examples used center around homeschooling, it's easy to translate into most other situations! There's only 1 chapter that is specifically about homeschooling, the others cover your relationship with God, marriage, friends, housekeeping, church, finances, etc.The goal here isn't how to do it all, all the time. It's about organization of priorities, so you can be present in each one, when it's supposed to be the focus.
