Bought this for a friend interested in joining the Freemasons, something that cannot be taken lightly. It is an excellent introduction to the craft. Like most of the "Dummies" series, it's also a great read and reference. I found much information that was a refresher to me, a Mason of 15 years and quite a few things that were absolutely new! Had to buy one for myself, both a Kindle version and the hard copy!

This book was recommended to me by a friend. He explained it would give me lots of valuable insight to what Freemasonry is all about and explain many of the things existing members just take for granted and forget to teach a newbie. He was absolutely correct. As I've progressed through the degrees, my mentor has been surprised at my understanding and grasp of symbolism he was supposed to teach me.I like the Dummies series. They are always well written, well organized and present their topic with humor. This one is no different.I can highly recommend this one to new brothers, or anyone who wants the real story on what goes on in Masonry. Mr. Hodapp is a Mason and as such, he doesn't reveal the really secret things like handclasps and such. But, that doesn't make this book any less valuable.

Gives a complete picture;background, history, and lots of extras other books don't give you without revealing the private aspects of the ritual. This is a great book, as other reviews have said, for anyone (mason or not) wanting to learn more about freemasonry. I read cover to cover and will continue to use this as a reference tool as this book is perfectly suited for either purpose.

Good book for anyone interested in finding out the real story of Freemasonry. My son and I became Freemasons together and we are going through the degrees. We will get our master mason degree in a week and a half. This book has been good reference.

As a person seeking information before becoming a Mason, I read this book and was given alot of useful information, debunking a lot of myths, if you are thinking of becoming a Mason this should be a must read, and for new masons to further their understanding of Masonry

Great book for those who are interested in the craft or have just petitioned or even been initiated and are a EA. This book is written by a Brother who has been and is still very active in the craft. It answered a lot of questions I had. Thank you for one of many great books Brother Hodapp.

I've learned a lot from this book. As an outsider that has no affiliation with the masons, I really appreciated that it was written by someone involved. It addressed ridiculous conspiracy theories, and gave you a great look at the history of the freemasons. I've had a chance to discuss this book with a friend that is a Mason and he was impressed with my understanding of things.

To begin with, I am not a Mason. However, I had many questions (prior to reading this book) that have now been addressed to my satisfaction. In fact, it's such a well-written book, that it brought to my attention things that I hadn't considered. It was at a friend's suggestion, who is a Mason, that I picked up this book to understand the fraternity a little bit better. In the simplest terms, Freemasonry is very much a FRATERNITY in the most noblest sense of the word. Unlike the drunken brawls typically associated with college fraternities when the word "fraternity" is spoken, which also summons imagery of a unkempt and dirty "frat houses", Freemasonry, as portrayed in this text, is nothing of the sort.As you might guess, I am considering petitioning (or asking) to become a Mason, which is something each individual must do of his own free volition. As I understand it, the fraternity does NOT extend an invitation to a man that he join the (local) Masonic lodge or the fraternity as a whole. I like this.To become a Mason, each man must decide for himself if this is an organization he wishes to associate himself with. Also, does the fraternity/lodge wish to associate with YOU. Are you a "good" man of reputable character and seeking moral and ethical improvement? This thing is a two-way street.Another major point of concern for me was whether Freemasonry is a religion. It is NOT a religion, but does place emphasis on acknowledgement of God as the supreme guiding force in one's life and that one should keep to the proverbial "straight and narrow" of one's faith (i.e., church, synagogue, etc.) - in other words, one MUST embrace the morality and ethical teaching within the tenets of one's own personal faith, and as such, be held accountable to those things by one's Brothers in the Lodge. Personally, I really like that as well. From what I read, if an individual Mason's conduct becomes questionable and inappropriate, after joining the fraternity, in regard to ethical and moral standards set forth by the Grand Lodge in one's jurisdiction, he can be permanently dismissed, disassociated, or terminated from the fraternity. This is usually a last resort, after having been given an opportunity to mend his ways and correct his behavior. The author has done a very good job in explaining a lot of the history and practices of freemasons around the world, but especially as it pertains to freemasonry in the United States and United Kingdom. I encourage anyone to pick up a copy of this book, as it is a marvelous starting point for addressing many of the concerns (and misunderstandings) people have regarding ceremonies, charities, appendant / related organizations, ethics, conspiracy theories, hoaxes, etc.
