I wasn't expecting anything too exciting from a children's mad-libs book. I bought this for my husband as a cute Valentine's gift and we've completed several of them together. We get a good innocent laugh out of the stories. If you're up for something more romantic, they make other mad-libs books that are more risqué.

This Lusitania book is about people who were on the fateful voyage. Mostly first class, some second class, no third class because they didn't leave many clues about their lives.The German U-Boat commander has always been vilified, but he was in a catch-22. The British were not playing by the rules of the sea. They carried contraband and put neutral flags on their ships. They ordered their ships to ram U-Boats. Walther Schwieger was within his rights to torpedo the British ship. It was in the war zone, carrying contraband, unmarked. Lusitania was unarmed, but could have tried to ram U-20.Captain Turner bears much blame for his irresponsible handling of Lusitania. The Admiralty bears much blame for their carelessness in safeguarding the ship. The passengers knew they would travel through the war zone on a belligerent nation's ship.Morally, should Schwieger have torpedoed Lusitania? Did he feel any remorse? His war diary was altered, and he died in the war. We'll never know if he did, in fact, fire a second torpedo.Many other books have been written about the Lusitania. This one is strong on the human interest and light on technicalities. I found it totally engrossing.

A century ago the guns were blazing across Europe. World War I was the largest conflict humanity had seen, and by the spring of 1915 hundreds of thousands had been killed and wounded. In the spring of 1915 an event took place that came to symbolize for many the waste and desolation that war brings: the sinking of the Cunard liner Lusitania by a German submarine. Greg King and Penny Wilson's fine new history not only tells what happened at the sinking itself but also why it had such an impact on so many people.The Lusitania and its sister ship the Mauretania were known as the Greyhounds of the Seas, famous for making the Atlantic crossing in record times while accomodating most of their passengers in a luxury that was ostentatious even by the standards of the day. They were tall, narrow beamed ships which gave a sense of spaciousness even in the relatively restrained Second Class sections. Built by the Cunard Line with loans from the British government, it was understood that if war came they might be requisitioned and put into military service. In the event, when World War I broke out in 1914 the Lusitania was allowed to continue its passenger service between Liverpool and New York, her cargo holds often filled with ammunition and other military equipment that was, legally speaking, barred from civilian ships. In the spring of 1915 Germany, frustrated by a British blockade that kept military and civilian supplies from reaching its shores, announced a policy of unrestricted submarine warfare in a zone around the British Isles. A number of ships were sunk before the Lusitania, but the Cunard liner was the largest and best known of the German submarines' victims.King and Wilson spend the first half of the book describing the Lusitania and giving short biographies of some of its best known passengers on its final voyage. Inevitably most of the material available deals with the wealthy First or Saloon Class passengers, like Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, but King and Wilson also focus on many of the Second Class passengers, who tended to be middle class. There was also a Third or Steerage class, but most of the people holding those tickets left little or no records, and thus their tales had to go unreported. It's entertaining to read about the luxurious quarters the First Class passengers enjoyed, as well as their often scandalous careers before they boarded the Lusitania for the last time.But the most compelling part of King and Wilson's book begins about half way through, when they reach the fatal day May 7, 1915, when shortly after lunch the German submarine U-20 (whose career and commanding officer Walter von Schwieger is also chronicled) fired one or two torpedos at the Lusitania off the southern coast of Ireland. The ship began to sink at once, with at least one mysterious explosion within the cargo hold causing fatal damage to its hull, and it went down in 18 minutes. King and Wilson draw from memoirs and newspaper descriptions of the survivors to provide an almost minute by minute account of the terror and confusion, abetted by poorly maintained lifeboats, incompetent and untrained crew members, and a captain who made a series of poor decisions. Those who survived the sinking itself then had to spend several hours in open lifeboats or in the water before rescuers could arrive. In all over a thousand people died, most of them civilians, including many young children and infants.The sinking of the Lusitania was not the "turning point" some have tried to make it. The US was outraged but remained out of the war for another two years. The Germans kept sinking ships without warning,and the British maintained their blockade, while the terrible battles went on and on. As King and Wilson tell it, the biggest result of the sinking was the harm done to Germany's international reputation by the descriptions of the terrible suffering and death toll. As for the surviving passengers and crew, King and Wilson provide an excellent epilogue in which they describe how the sinking altered their lives' courses and inflicted lasting physical and emotional damage.The Lusitania tragedy has always been somewhat overshadowed by the Titanic sinking three years earlier as well as by the fact that it took place in the middle of an ongoing bloodbath. Now that a century has passed King and Wilson's fine book serves to remind us that hundreds of lives and a remarkable piece of engineering were lost to the world that spring afternoon in 1915.

The large cast of characters used to move the story along are well-chosen and are so well-drawn that it gives the book an intimate quality as if we are peeking in on them. An impressive array of photos of the people and the ship help us as we try to picture who and what the authors are describing. The fact that several Lusitania families helped with information for this book shows the hard work of the authors.The glamorous backdrop is the ship itself and the readers are treated to vivid descriptions of the Lusitania's luxurious interiors. Life at sea is not what it is today. As there were no commercial planes it was really the only way to get to another land. We follow this group as they make friends, sip tea, read, play cards, and dance, while trying in vain not to worry about submarines and torpedoes. The suspense of what is about to happen carries readers to the fateful day. The authors show the agony of trying to abandon the ship in 18 minutes. Many heroic deeds are recorded and sad tales of overturned lifeboats, parents separated from children, and strangers helping strangers in moments of peril.The story does not end as the waters close over the stern; King and Wilson use their impressive research to show what happened to the survivors and the families of victims in later life. Some fortunes change for the better, others for the worse. I can assuredly say that this book will be very useful as a research tool in the future and highly regarded by lovers of history. Having read the authors previous works, I knew to expect a well-written book and I was not disappointed. I eagerly await their next work.

This book lays out a complete year long training plan and functions as a notebook to log your progress if you like. You should definitely look at THINNER, LEANER AND STRONGER before starting this training plan.I bought this book for my wife who was looking to change up her workout this year. I had recently read Mike Matthew's book for men and have really been enjoying and finding success with his suggested training program. I loved how simple and straightforward the workouts are. This is all stuff that you should be able to do in an hour at the gym, and there isn't any silly, confusing nonsense. Strength training is really not that complicated. As Matthews explains, so many people are just confused by all of the misguided, contradictory information we're bombarded with.My wife has been going to the gym fairly regularly for the past few years, but her time there hasn't been very organized or focused. Occasionally she would ask me to write out "something to do" at the gym, and she would do that routine for a while. Its good that she has been going, but at some point you need practical advice and a program like Mike Matthews offers here to really get the most out of your time. i.e. Do these things on this day, this number of times, this many weeks, etc;I was really impressed by this book. She won't be asking me to write out "something to do at the gym" anytime soon. The day's training plan is written out clearly, page by page here for the entire year. She is set! More importantly, I was happy to see that she read through THINNER LEANER STRONGER and seems to have picked up a better understanding of both WHAT she is doing and WHY she is doing certain things.Fair warning: I kind of laughed during the first week when she was complaining how tired she was at the end of the day. She couldn't understand it. I had the exact same reaction when I first started Mike's program last year. For a week or so, I was incredibly wiped out at the end of the day. It was very disconcerting because we're both pretty active people and no strangers to the gym. Don't let it slow you down or worry you. My body adjusted and caught up to the new training, and I haven't felt that level of exhaustion since.I can't recommend this book highly enough. Every day I see people at the gym paying $50/hour to have a personal trainer do goofy, not especially effective exercises. For about $20, you can get the two THINNER, LEANER books, save yourself hundreds of dollars through the year and get way more out of your time at the gym. Be patient, follow the advice here and good luck!

I struggled between 4 and 5 stars.I recently purchased this book to start my one year challenge. I've already been weightlifting for a few years. I wanted to really make some better progress. I'm a total fan of Mike's books. I have both his cook books, thinner leaner stronger (on audio) and his fitness myths book.I have really attempted to use the information he provided to change the way I eat even more then I had, and to hone in my fitness routine. After two weeks I am already seeing improvements.The workouts seem easy and pointless but the next day you feel the burn.Just don't forget you have to push yourself to make the progress and be willing to challenge bumping up the weights.My only beef with the book is that it's geared to people with a gym membership. I have a home gym I've been slowly building and refuse to go back to the meat market where you can't get your hands on the good stuff (because of all the Meatheads hogging it while taking selfies)Some of the exercises I simply don't have the equipment for and there is not substitutions or modifications. I've tried to look some up but really.. there is not much I can find to be the equivalent to the leg press. But even so 90% of the exercises I CAN do!My only other beef is there isn't much on Max Rep. You need to know what that is to know where to start with his guide. It took me a little while of research outside his book to really understand that. It's not difficult or anything but kinda the key to unlock the rest of it.Otherwise I highly recommend it for people struggling on what the heck to do for a workout.It's certainly helped me fix my plan, and honestly simplify it.

I love having everything planned out! A years worth of workouts! Come on! That right there is incredible! 3 different splits ( 5,4,3 days) to fit your schedule! Use this with the TLS book and change your body forever! I’m only a few months in and my results have been spectacular!!

I bought this book at the same time I bought Thinner, Leaner Stronger (TLS) and once I bounced around from chapter to chapter I dove right in to lifting heavy. I began lifting (again) in early January and I did make some progress. But once I understood lifting "heavy" I was on a roll. I am only at the end of week two of Phase 1, 5 Day Split and I feel so much better about myself. I feel stronger, healthier from eating right and I am an already down a size in jeans. Lovin it! I lift in the mornings and have found that I am ready to work out again in the evenings and there's been a time or two where I had to keep myself from doing so.If your not sure about it just take the plunge and buy the books. At 61 years old this hard work is already paying off.

I LOVED all of RA Salvatore's books, until I read this. I got through this book and halfway into the second before I stopped reading it. The main character is whiny and awful. I can't stand the character. Even the characters that I liked from past books became unloveable in this series. I realize that RA is not the main writer and it shows. I was truly sad not to finish the series, but I was so tired of the little rude punk that I couldn't take anymore of him. I can't imagine anyone in the story putting up with this kid the way it was portrayed. I'll give RA another chance on his other books, but no more on this series.

I love R.A. Salvatore's work and have been following his stuff since the Crystal Shard. This book may have been glanced over by him, but he had nothing to do with the writing. It is simplistic at best and states the obvious so many times that it becomes annoying. I haven't a care in the world what happens to the main character, Maimun, because he has no depth. The only way this book makes it close to 300 pages is that the double spaced font size is large enough so grandma doesn't need her glasses to read it and the text is surrounded by generous 3/4" columns. I am doing my best to complete this book but may pull the plug as other reviews have stated, it ends in a cliff-hanger. I'd rather just throw Maimun over the cliff and be done with it!

Amazing as always. Salvatore senior & now his son are truly genius'when it comes to fantasy. Keep it up. Eagerly looking forward to more.

The Good: I really did enjoy the 3 books in this series. Did a great job tying in old friends while not making them part of the story. Typical great Salvatore books that you can't put down.The Bad and the Ugly: This book and its 2 sequals are very short. It should be a 1 book volume, not a 3 book series. Listed as ~300 pages, but must have been VERY large font. I read this on my Kindle, so the 3 together where $25.25...

This quality of writing is good for younger readers, however it lacks the pop that successful artists targeting the youth sector have. For instance lets look at the character depthness:Main character: Inquisitive and blandMain characters father: Quiet and BlandMain villain: Typical bad guy. Overcocky, and ultra powerful.There is no character development really. You read it almost devoid of emotion that RA has been able to put through even the shorted pieces of work.The cameos by Cattie Brie and Drizzt seem forced. The dialoge between the main character and Drizzt seems bland. Drizzt during the era was going through profound emotions about his heritage, etc. It seems bizarre that hes seemingly a copy of the main characters father. A robot that parrots a few phrases.The introduction of Robillard seems to be a completely different person. Robillard was supremely cocky. I was sure surprised to see him working as a guard in memmon. The attempt at cocky demeanor was there, but it was without Robillards typical spark. I am also confused as to how he and Dudermont forged a strong relationship that is seen later in the various Drizzt series. I will have to reread to see when he was brought on, but him being a dock worker/guard seemed out of place.As stated by another reviewer, the book is an extremely quick read.And what I am not used to seeing is the generic cliff hanger that sounds like it came from a saturday morning cartoon "Find out what happens next"However, regardless of its flaws, the story is based in a world with some of the best fantasy characters ever penned. It is worth reading.Perfect for a plane ride :)

A fine book for the youngsters.As for the adults, I got it to complete my Drizzt collection.

It was a good book but just didn't seem to as good as the other RA books I have read. I'm hoping the next one picks up a little more.

Love that I can share my author with my younger reader.

As my daughter is nearing her eighth birthday in only a few more months, I'd been seeking age appropriate resources to help guide and grow her faith in the Lord. She's getting older and more childish things seem to be passing away in her life. She's beginning to ask a lot of questions and thinking about what her purpose in life could be.My search however was proving a bit difficult with most books and magazines being geared more toward older pre-teenagers. Things like boyfriends, cellphones, and fashion which most other devotions are filled with didn't really fit her criteria.However after I came across The Plans I Have For You Devotional and Journal set by ZonderKidz my search ended!The hardcover 160 page devotional is meant to be gone through over the span of 90 days. It's based upon the Bible verse Jeremiah 29:11 " For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.". There are six sectors; I've Got Big Plans For You, I've Given You a Purpose, I Don't Do Small Things, There's Nothing You Can't Do, Find That One Thing, & What I Created You To Do. Each sector focuses on something different that all ties together beautifully.The illustrations throughout the book are awesome! The text and devotions give one something to think about. There is always a Bible verse for each day and questions to go along with each devotion if you pick up the corresponding journal. My daughter has seemed to enjoy this devotional and feels that it appeals perfectly to girls around her age. I personally think it's wonderful that it is not overwhelming to her. She'll pick it up all on her own and really contemplate and share her thoughts whether with me or in the journal. It's growth in her walk that I am so very proud of!This devotion overall guides the reader through their present each day and encourages them to look to the future in discovering God's purpose for their life. In turn, they will find peace, security, and the love and acceptance that we only can receive from the Lord.
