I can't say enough good stuff about this book! It is a nice quality hard-bound book with many color photos. The author is clearly an avian expert, and her opinions and ideas make sense. The techniques the book teaches mainly center around positive reinforcement and avoidance of situations where the bird might display aggression. I'm going to try to use her suggestions to hopefully work through my 9-year old Amazon parrot's fear/dislike of my boyfriend. I would recommend this book to both novices and experienced bird handlers alike.

came in great condition. still reading it.has great information since I am a first time bird owner it helps me. Has info on lots of problem people come across with their birds and what people do. I have a problem with a bitting macaw who I got as a rescue. I wanted to book to help me stop the bird from bitting me everytime I tried to get him out of his cage since he was cage bound. I found a technique instead of pressing him to stepup and bitting me. I now get him to come to me and reward him when he does with treats. He now comes out of his cage in the morning on his own and steps up on my arm I take him to his perch and reward and praise him. So the book has helped me with my bird. I am still reading it to learn other things about birds to prevent problems with them. Very happy I purchased it.

THIS BOOK HELPED ME OUT A LOT, I HAVE A BIRD THAT WAS DISPLAYING AGGRESSION. I FOUND OUT WITH HIS TERMINAL ILLNESS THAT THIS IS NORMAL AND EVEN WITH THAT, I HAVE MANAGED TO USE SOME TECHNIQUES IN THE BOOK AND HE IS LESS AGGRESSIVE. THANK YOU

I'm repeating my review of Ms. Heidenreich's other book, Good Bird! because I think both books work together as one great resource. They are the best books I've come across dealing with companion parrots. If you understood why your bird is behaving as it does, you can deal with it more effectively. Kindness and reward go far with a companion bird (and, even though Ms. Heidenreich didn't mention it, 11-12 hours of covered cage/darkness a day does, too) than all the reprimanding in the world (which a parrot does not understand). A parrot, much like a cat, is not going to do anything he doesn't want to do, but unlike a cat, you can convince a parrot to want what you want, too. Tell him he's a good bird when he's quiet. Give him a reward when he says something nice. Understand you are his teacher, not his mate and not his slave. Punish him by turning your back, reward him by giving attention and praise. Parrots are a lot like toddlers - they need to be constantly taught how to be good and their companions need to be able to recognize the behaviors (sometimes extremely hard to see) that signal overexcitement, frustration and anger. Excellent book I'd recommend to any bird "owner."

A few months ago, I was having problems with my green cheek conure, Mugsy. He had become very aggressive and would bite me, hard, seemingly out of the blue. It was getting to the point where I didn't want to interact with him anymore. I'd planned to purchase another book on solving parrot behavior problems, but after reading the reviews realized it wasn't for me. Thanks to other people's recommendations, I went with this book and the change in Musgy has been night and day. He's now very affectionate and eager to please. I've been teaching him tricks to provide more positive quality time with him, and he loves the tricks. He'll still bite occasionally, but immediately stops when I tell him, "be nice." I would recommend this book to anyone who's having difficulties with their parrots. Thanks to everyone who recommended it.

Excellent reference for owners of large parrots. This book will explain why your bird does what it does. It is absolutely the best book I have purchased so far concerning the behavior of my macaw. It takes the mystery out of your birds aggressive behaviors. It explains your bird's natural daily routines. I found it most enlightening. Once you understand how parrots behave in the wild, your bird's behaviors will make a whole lot more sense to you, and that truly helps you provide the best for your companion. This book is a real jewel for owners of large parrots and I think it should be required reading for all who own one. Well written and highly informative, it is by far the best book that I have found on parrot behavior to date. It will really help you understand your bird.

This is one of the best books I have read on parrot care and training. It was especially helpful because I have a "second-hand" parrot who was coerced into stepping up and as a result is very aggressive with hands. I found it helpful that she addressed this particular problem. I also liked that she gave references and examples of training. I would have liked step by step instructions or details for example Barbara Heidenreich said she worked 20 minutes each day for two weeks to train a bird and I was curious to know what she did each day for 20 minutes and how she began and ended those sessions. Maybe she will write another book where I can learn more. I also liked her philosophy of building a relationship with the bird rather than trying to dominate the bird. Thank you for this book.

Covers the most common problems parrot owner face and always gives advice from a trust building instead of trust destroying point of view. Parrots are not domesticated animals and do not react to us like dogs, cats, and other types of pet do. Parrots are very independent mentally and are socially flock animals; so they need a different way of handling than our usual pets.Great book.
