My all-time favorite history-and-disease book. First read it as a teen many many years ago, and it probably played a part in focusing my interest in biology. Dr Zinsser shines through on every page, making it highly readable as well as good science (and sociology) history.I highly recommend it.

Interesting and witty read. For anyone interested in the history of Typhus Fever, or just the transmission of disease in general. And/or for people interested in history and/or science. A one-of-a-kind book.

This book met all of my expectations, and more. It was interesting to read the stories of how diseases and parasites had played major roles in the history of the world. A fascinating book.

Even though this book was required for a class, I found it to be entertaining and informative. This book is about how "vermin" have influenced humans throughout history, and why we have certain perceptions about rodents and insects. The book is pretty comprehensive, covering human history from the birth of agriculture to the industrial age to the present day. I think of rodents as misunderstood, so this really resonated with me and helped me understand why some people hate them so much. This book is a pretty short, quick read, so if you're interested in the history of rodents, bugs, and disease, check it out.

I love this book! Originally published in 1934, it has withstood the test of time. Clearly, the writer loves his subject. His writing is sly, witty and informative, as he draws the reader in to a growing appreciation of this unusual subject.

You can tell they tried. Just screams look at us, we're fun and zanny and off the wall cute!!!! Then it falls so short of the mark. Jokes bomb, adventure uninvolving with characters who have no character. Most of the time the team just stands together and make snarky comments about the events going on around them. Like the Mystery Science Theater crew do when watching a movie. But that's not the Avengers. Not horrible just not worth it.

My new favorite super team book.

I think the title is pretty self-explanatory, but essentially this is a phenomenal series. I was sold the moment I learned Kelly Thompson was going to be writing the two Hawkeyes again, to say nothing of the rest of the cast which includes a number of fantastic characters such as America Chavez, Gwenpool, and Quentin Quire. From the first issue, this quickly became one of my new favorites with Thompson's always fantastic writing and Caselli and Di Nicuolo's great art. This series is just pure fun, manages to capture all of the characters personalities perfectly, and starts with an attack by Sharks with legs.

While this isn't the cast I would have chosen to lead a relaunch (No USAgent? No Living Lightning?), Kelly Thompson and Stefano Caselli tell a fun story with reverence to the past, an eye to the future, and plenty of humor. These are the Wackos you remember... but they are memorable just the same! Thompson and Caselli make characters like America Chavez shine!

Yeah, this book is weird. It’s not your typical superhero book. It has some characters that a lot of readers might not be familiar with. It does not deliver the same experience you might expect from a book with “avengers” on the cover. THESE ARE ALL THE REASONS YOU SHOULD LOVE THIS BOOK.Kelly Thompson writes with so much heart. She loves these characters. It’s so evident from reading just a few pages. Any time she writes Kate Bishop, it’s an automatic buy for me.Buy this book. Buy 2 and give one to a friend who might be sick of the usual Capes and Cowls brand of comics. This book is funny and exciting and it deserves to be recognized.

This story is like the Avengers but also not like the Avengers, it has a lighthearted tone and really showcases the importance of friendship and extended family in these superhero stories. Really easy to get an old school Fantastic Four vibe from it, Kate Bishop really steals the show here as does writer Kelly Thompson. If I had one knock for the series I would say I wish they were able to acquire more well known characters and villains but for what they have they worked wonders with!

I’ve been making mine marvel for over 25 years and this book easily makes it into my top 10. It’s the perfect blend of fun and feels and endeared me to characters that I hadn’t previously followed. I originally picked it up for the art, which IS GORGEOUS. The writing is pithy, fast-paced, and funny. Kelly Thompson (writer), Stephano Caselli (artist), Trionna Farrell (color artist), and this motley crew of marvel characters make a perfect cocktail for madcap mayhem. Buy it if you want to laugh.

West coast avengers is such a breath of fresh air for me in comics right now. It such a interesting team dynamic book with people you wouldn’t expect and it works. The art by Caselli and coloring by Farrell really brings that sunny L.A. vibe the book radiates all together.

I found this guide inadequate for a novice forager to learn to confidently identify any of the plants listed. There is one picture for each entry, and only a few words to describe what to look for and how to distinguish it from poisonous alternatives. I would have preferred more descriptive identifying language and less ruminating about all the fond memories each particular plant brings to the author from his formative years.I also found the recipes uninspiring and unnecessary. The author could have saved a lot of space by simply writing in the beginning "everything in this book can be steamed or boiled for ten minutes and served with butter" instead than repeating that same basic formula on every damned page.This guide was also clearly written for the Maine forager in mind. Though it is marketed as a guide for edible plants "from Maine to the Adirondacks to Long Island Sound," I get the impression from that this was a titling decision meant to expand the customer base. Every written description of the plants refer to their abundance in Maine, and one gets the impression that the calendar dates for when to harvest are geared toward northern New England, not coastal New York.What really made me decide to return this guide, however, was the passage on willow trees, which, in relevant part, read: "Another youthful memory is of my grandpa using a freshly cut willow branch as a dowsing rod. Grandpa found water with ease, and he taught me the skill. And not surprisingly, my favorite medium for a water-dowsing rod is willow. (A water dowsing rod is a forked stick that dowsers use to locate water. They hold the stick in both hands and walk about, waiting for the end of the stick to dive down, indicating a source of water.)" Dowsing is pure pseudoscientific folklore which has been proven to be baseless by many reliable studies. I was hoping to buy a field guide from a scientist, and instead I got a guide written by somebody who I now picture walking around while wobbling a forked stick in the air with two hands. I understand respect for ancient traditions, but I'm not going to trust my health to a guide with such casual disregard for scientific reasoning.I've given this guide two stars because it seems to have a decent list of abundant plants for foragers to look out for, and because the author shows a clear passion for the art of foraging and a deep connection to the edible plants of New England. I have no doubt that more experienced foragers will find this guide to be good reading, but I strongly disagree with everybody who recommends it for beginners.

Excellent book with a few minor suggestions for improvement.The Good: This is really, really readable. Unlike other books on the subject that I've tried to read, the prose is interesting enough that you don't find yourself reading the same paragraph four times and realizing you've still not retained any of it. Mr. Seymour is somewhat flowery in his descriptions (yes, yes, it's a terrible pun), but his mastery of prose is quite good. He does an excellent job conveying mental images with minimal words.The Nitpicky: Pictures. My kingdom for more pictures! Mr Seymour makes a point of explaining how the plants will not look the same throughout their growing seasons, but each entry is only afforded a single, albeit lovely, picture of the plant in question. While it would make the book substantially larger, I would love to seeA. Pictures at each stage of the plant's life.B. Up close images of tell-tale portions of the plantC. Contrasting pictures when he indicates there is a look-alike plant not fit for consumptionD. Pictures where necessary indicating how the plant is preparedThe Ugly: Nothing. Very well doneSummation: I purchased this book in advance of a planned family 6 week trip up the Long Trail this coming summer and it does not disappoint. I recommend it and hope to see an updated version with more photographs; I will certainly purchase it if such an edition is published.

I was disappointed in this book. I thought I was getting something that would guide me in foraging for things like elderberry, mullein, wild local weeds that could be eaten or used for medicinal purposes. Don't get me wrong, there are a few but not what someone interested in wildcraft herbalism is looking for, also the pictures do a poor job on helping you properly identify a plant, this book will only have one picture of the plant, mostly when in bloom. Which is tough because you might be looking to forage something pre-bloom and the plants can look very different.

We have some experience with local edible plants and have a friend who's a pro. This is a wonder carry-along version. The illustrations are excellent, showing the key parts of the plants for identification and for eating. The pictures are right in the body with the text too.

Good little book. I found almost all the plants around my house. Would like to see more mushrooms.

I am an avid Baldacci fan and have read all the Camel Club books, except 'Bullseye'. This one is not a "page turner". At times I thought "did Baldacci really write this?"Annabella took a back seat in this novel. That's sad because she is the gutsy cool character. Caleb and Reuben also were minor characters. This novel takes lots of twists, perhaps too many. Anyway I finished it. Please David, if you are reading this go back to the characters that made the "club" so enjoyable. Do a prequel with Milton and the originals, but sadly that would leave Annabella out? Can't do that!!I'll still keep my Baldacci library growing like Caleb's famous library.

This series is the first I have read of David Baldacci's writing, and the characters, plot, pacing, etc. are very good. This book does keep your interest right to the end, and there are a few unexpected occurrences. What is not unexpected, and begins to be a little monotonous, is the graphic violence surrounding our deadly-assassin-with-a-heart-of-gold main character. Likewise the recurring theme of evil people rising to the top, having basically run amuck with the power they have been given. While there is a measure of revenge that may satisfy some sense of justice, it does little to relieve the depression brought on by the situation as a whole. That the characters in the book are drawn to each other and are unfailingly loyal to each other in spite of the knowledge that they easily engage in behavior that is reviled by most civilized people (the end always justifies the means, each person is their own judge of right and wrong, life and death) is vaguely heartwarming but mostly disturbing. So the quick summary is that the writing is technically good, the story gripping - but you don't want to think too deeply about the world view embraced by these characters that we are supposed to like.

This is a good, page-turner read. I enjoyed this book even though I have not read the other Camel Club books in the series. I read this book for a Book Club discussion, and I was worried I would not understand the characters since I did not have the Camel Club background. But, that was not the case. Baldacci does a good job of getting the characters' traits and dimensions across even for the first-time reader. Plot, setting, and action are all well developed. The reason I chose 4 stars instead of 5 is that the novel seems to have one too many "twists" toward the end. Most of the reverses and surprises were thoroughly fun and heightened the reading experience. Overall, this book offers reading time well spent.

I've been a Baldacci fan since time began and just recently discovered this fourth novel in the Camel Club series, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. This novel returns protagonist Oliver Stone (John Carr) to government service to halt a nefarious plot to spread drugs through the US and kill a bunch of people initiated by the Russians.... or was it the Mexicans ..... or the Russians ....Determining who the bad guys are working for and exactly why they want to blow things up and kill the president is Stone's job, He solves it of course, despite government interference, and catches the bad guys with help from the Camel Club, but it's a wild ride. Oh, and the Camel Club gets a new member. Go for it!

If you are at all interested in how things ARE suppose to be and not what you may have been taught or told they mean, then read this book. I think anyone with the ability to read will understand it all, and have the intelligence to work out for themselves where they stand on a topic, not only now but in the future. I have given away so many of this book and others to both old and young and while they haven't all enjoyed each one, they have come away with a slightly different view of things regardless of their political leanings.

Given all the "legislating" and "law-making" done by the Supreme Court especially since the '50's (a task that the Constitution assigns to Congress, not the SC) this is an important work to read by an attorney who is a scholar that specializes in Constitutional issues. The book was written in 2005 but it is even more relevant today than it was then.

This book was given as a gift and how can you not like a Mark Levin book! He is a very informative about what is going on in the USA....I also bought two other of his books as gifts as well. Good reading....

One of the best books describing how we've begun to lose control of our country and our freedom. Mark cuts right to the heart of the issues, and explains everything clearly with research to back up his assertions. A wonderful book for a true patriot from a true patriot. You'll never go wrong with any of Mark Levin's books: Men in Black, Liberty and Tyranny, Ameritopia, The Liberty Amendments, and Plunder and Deceit.

Though somewhat dated all of the information was well written, easy to understand and explained in some detail how air rifles are used the differences between them as well as information on how to use them for the control of pests. Written primarily for the benefit of shooters in England, Scotland, and Ireland most, if not all, of the information is just as important here in America or, I imagine anywhere in the world.

This book is really good for those people new to airguns and are entering the sport with a focus on small game hunting. The author is clearly vastly experienced at hunting with airguns and does a pretty good job of explaining what to look for in a hunting airgun setup. I like the emphasis on practice and field craft rather than needing to have the latest high tech gear.There are quite a few typos which detract a bit from the overall writing standard of the book and there are also a few comments that seem illogical to me (eg. how one sub 12ft/lb rifle could hit harder than another). Otherwise a great book that I regularly refer back to.

This book breaks down the basics of airguns, scopes and hunting with them and is a good read. Very informative and a MUST READ for folks interested in air rifles or hunting or both. Diagrams are good and well described. I learned a lot from this book.

Information was accurate and well presented. The perspective of using one brand of air rifles made this more useful to owners of that brand, but still worth the money.

Well written if you are from England or that area. Very little about American rifles or repairs. Basic shooting knowledge for beginners but not for serious shooting.

Pros:1. It explains the most mundane and basic air rifle information. I suppose this is good if you literally know next to nothing about air rifles or shooting.2. Ummm... It's written in English, which is great if you only speak English.3. I bought the $12 Kindle edition rather than the $40 hardcover.4. The book doesn't contain any dead babies.Cons:1. It's a gigantic advertisement for BSA (Birmingham Small Arms, an air rifle company of some repute). Seriously, every photo of an air rifle in the book is a photo of a BSA. There's a section that deals specifically with how to load a BSA magazine, a section on how to tune a specific BSA rifle, and many, many pages describing in great detail all the wonderful qualities of various BSA arms. I don't think any mention was ever made of a single rifle manufacturer except BSA. Heck, even the Appendix is one giant ad for the BSA XL Tactical .25. I have nothing against BSA (except that they obviously compensated the author for writing this book, which in the context of this book seems unethical), but when you sacrifice objectivity and detail so that you can try to sell the purchaser of this book a BSA branded rifle, it irks me.2. The lack of depth is shocking. Appendix 2 is labeled "Kill Zones". Know what that entails? A sketch of a rabbit and a rat with black dots on their heads. Oh, by the way... If you're hunting something, you should try to be quiet and avoid letting it see you. Seriously?!? Oh, and it's easier to aim if you rest the rifle on something. Duh!3. The book shoot be titled "Air Rifle Shooting for Pest Control and Rabbiting IN THE UK ONLY" because the FAC 12ft/lb limit (aka power limit) basically only applies to the UK. So he spends the entire book giving you advice on how to hunt from an "absolute max of 40 yards" and insisting that you should "never" hunt from any further than that. And that might be true if you are only legally permitted to hunt with relatively anemic 12fpe rifles. Meanwhile, for most of the world, there's no reason why they can't hunt at 100+ yards if their rifle, skills, prey, and conditions allow them to.4. He offers instructions that are ill-informed or uselessly obscure. For example, he offers instructions on how to use a Hill PCP pump to pressurize a BSA PCP rifle, information that a tiny fraction of readers might benefit from knowing, and the few that would could just READ THE MANUAL that came with their pump. He informs the reader that we "should lube our pellets" because lubed pellets "are 50% more accurate". What?!? Says who? Granted, there are some gun/pellet combos that benefit from lubing, but to claim that we should all lube our pellets is blatantly untrue and could even result in terrible damage to our guns and DECREASED accuracy in some cases.5. There are, I'd say, about 30 photos in the book. About a third of those are photos of BSA rifles, a third are of him shooting BSA rifles with slain prey in the fore/background, and the remaining third are of him holding a BSA rifle while wearing a ghillie suit... To hunt rabbits and rats. I don't need ten pictures of a guy in a ghillie suit unless I'm taking a course on using ghillie suits because I'm about to be put into live combat. If you wanted to know what to buy him, get him another ghillie suit. Or a photo of him wearing one. He'll love it.6. I suspect the positive reviews for this book and the book itself have the same author.

This book was great. it gets into the nity grity of airgun hunting. It also is very informitive on products and maintenance that the airgun hunter should be awair of. It also realistic about airgun hunting. I have read of people shooting tiny groups at a hundred yards with air guns and i have always doubted it. I have always thought that most of those claims are either outright lies, or they are just a really poor judge of distance. This writer puts things in the proper prespective. The usual for airguns is between 15-25 yards, after that in the hands of your typical marksman they arnt powerful or accurate enough. I appreciate this imput being fairly new to the air hunting scean.

This was useful for a quick trip and it's surprisingly the only tour book for Nashville.Very concise and helpful.

Overall, this guide is as good as one would expect from a major source like Frommer's. However, there were a few instances where the author opening bashed how cheesy certain aspects of Graceland and other popular sites can come across to visitors. In general, when I buy a guide I look for the author to have a love of the place they are writing about, but at times the open distaste the author showed toward some sites was a bit off-putting.

We were specifically looking for golf courses and didn't find this guide helpful at all. I will say, however, this is the first of many Frommer's Guide we have ordered that has disappointed us.

This was a great guide to cut to the chase of what is worth seeing in Memphis. We only had a couple of days on the trip and this guide was our "bible" for planning our days to make sure we got the most bang for our buck while we were there. Has so much information and things that are off the beaten path that we would have never known about otherwise. Excellent resource -highly recommend!

I read this before making my first visit to Nashville, but upon arriving, found that I didn't really use it much. It's got your standard stuff -- hotels, restaurants, places of interest, but it was a bit more fun finding places on my own.

This book was perfect to plan our wonderful trip to Nashville. We did countless things while there and checked them off in the book as we went along.

Although we are not going to Memphis, this guide has all the ins and outs and must sees for both cities. Allowing visitors to choose the C&W, jazz and blues, Southern hospitality or all possible variations.

A little harder to follow in kindle form. Much easier to find things in the real book. Will take it with me on trip.
