Review

"The art of Carrie Mae Weems is as subtle and sublimely elegant as it is uncompromisingly political... she is among the most radically innovative artists working today." (Zoe Lescaze New York Times)"Carrie Mae’s photographs and videos take women as their central subjects and delve into their interiors, drawing out experiences of friendship, motherhood, memory and race in order to make visible the near invisibility and lack of understanding and documentation of the domestic lives of women, in particular women of color." (Laurie Simmons)This exquisitely produced monograph presents the series by itself for the first time. (Andrea Kirsh Artblog)…this is (surprisingly) the first book-length rendering of Weems’ seminal 1990 domestic study. The brevity of the project―20 images and 14 text panels―gives it room to breathe here, adding intensity to the stark self-portraits and mini-dramas and the startlingly frank prose. (Jack Crager American Photo)So elegant and understated. The photos get to do the heavy lifting, but the design is gorgeous. (50 Covers of 2016) (Gail Anderson AIGA Design Archives)Long before the age of the selfie, Weems embarked on an unprecedented exploration of interiority. Very often her own subject, Weems produced work that is raw and personal and in many ways informs how we understand self-imaging even now. (Kimberly Drew Lenny)Honest and raw, The Kitchen Table Series illustrates how we are all learning―from ourselves and each other―in our journey through this thing called life. (Liana DeMasi Musee Magazine)Selected for Vogue.com's Best Photo Books of Spring 2016 (Suzanne Shaheen Vogue.com)[Weems's] Kitchen Table Series... [is] enduring, making its way into plenty of books and museums over the years. It’s now finally getting a stand-alone copy. (Stephanie Eckardt W Magazine)In book form, Kitchen Table is more intimate… Unlike the experience of meandering through a museum, stepping back to appreciate the images and nearing the text panels to skim them, the pace of exploration is now in a person’s hands. [Weems] and Matsumoto spread out the series―and essays by the scholars Sarah Lewis and Adrienne Edwards―over 86 pages, supplying ample space to absorb it. Weems remarks, of Kitchen Table in particular, 'It has clearly touched the lives of a great many people. It touches a chord and speaks to something that’s fairly universal.' And, something that’s continuously fresh. (Hilary Moss T: The New York Times Style Magazine)

The recipes in this book are hit (meat with prunes!) and miss (freezing lemons and using the whole thing instead of just buying preserved lemons is awful!), but the hits have gotten my boyfriend to eat vegetables! AMAZING. I got a tagine for Christmas, and after buying this book spent a couple of weeks buying the various spice blends used in the recipes. We review each recipe, with the date, on a post-it, so that we know which ones we enjoyed, and if we had to make any substitutions. It's been fun so far, and we've been introduced to a lot of interesting flavors and fruits/vegetables we wouldn't normally use in savory dishes.

Had the most delicious meal last night. The Persian Chicken dish. I made a few changes in one of the mixtures as I don't like hot spicy food, but otherwise I followed the directions and it was better than any meal I have eaten in any restaurant. The book has wonderful info on use. Happy I read it as my Tagine did get a very fine long crack on the bottom and she says it is nothing to be concerned about. I think I got it as I used a diffuser that is 8 1/2" and the Tagine is 12". I ordered an 11" diffuser today. My husband was annoyed that I bought the Tagine, but now loves it as he also thought the meal was superbI am now stocking up on spices mentioned in the book and looking forward to making other delicious meals..

This is the 2nd one I purchase. It was a gift for my sister but I have one and feel it is a great starter cookbook for Persian cooking. I love the recipes in this cookbook. Have not made anything that's not terrific tasting and easy to make.

I would not part with this book, ever! Love the recipes and have made most of them several times, especially the unique spice blends that I use on a daily basis. I found the food in Morocco disappointing after cooking these recipes at home. The flavor is extraordinary and forces you to experiment with new vegetables and spices. One of my all-time favorite cookbooks in my giant collection. Easy to make too! Love it.

I bought this for a friend who had just bought a Tagine and he loves it. In fact, whenever I go visit, we choose a recipe and cook and eat it together. Excellent and easy to understand and do recipes.

I am new to cooking with a tagine and I really, really like this book. First of all, the few recipes that have been attempted has been really good -- even my wife whose tastes in food can vary from mine, has liked the few dishes that have been attempted. There is even a hummus recipe that does not use a tagine and it is outstanding. The other thing that I like about this book is the introduction that explains how to care/maintain a tagine, as well as some instructions to enable cooking on a stovetop and in an oven. The book is written for special tagines to be used on stovetops or flames, but the author provides information what needs to be done when the tagine is used in the oven (and possibly on a grill with in-direct heat). I appreciate some forethought by the author to give advice on cooking techniques to those of us not familiar with.I do not have other tagine cookbooks in my library to compare this book to. I cannot tell to how authentic the recipes are, but I do know what I like and I really like the recipes to have been attempted. I have even altered some of the meat recipes to a remove the meat and have a vegetarian dinner -- the food was nonetheless tasty.

Great Recipes. We have only tried about six recipes but they all came out perfectly. Can't wait until the next Tagine dinner!

The Golden Chicken with Potatoes and Chickpeas is worth the price of the book. The author also reviews the 6 most popular tagines and provides information on how to adapt the recipes for each tagine. Good background on spices and ingredients. Well written and illustrated.

One of the challenges with a book of this caliber is where to start...wow. Really esoteric, and became a source for investigation into many other areas and philosophies after reading. One of the benchmarks for a excellent book is how it starts investigations into realities and information that you didn't even know existed. I'm a better person for having had consumed.

Haraway, as usual, writes an incredible book that dismantles much of the workings of subjective, patriarchal biological traditions and perspectives. Am very much looking forward to her upcoming book.

Haraway, as usual

In some parts, groundbreaking. In others, a bit longwinded and roaming. But that's Haraway's work in general. She'll blow your mind and make you sigh in boredom in turns.

I want to apologize for this review, because it is less a review of Haraway's exceptionally important book than it is a few sentences on the question of why someone should review a book on Amazon and why one should perhaps not. If you feel that you can competently say a few things about a book that will help a prospective reader know what they are getting into. If you have any kind of lingering doubt about your competency to review a book, then don't.Most of the people who have reviewed this book to date shouldn't have. There are books that don't simply exist within a field of studies, but define and constitute that field of studies, and their value transcends any one individual's like or dislike of it. Giving such a book anything less than five stars is beyond ludicrous. I do not like Freud's INTERPRETATION OF DREAMS, but to give it less than five stars is simply silly due to its status as a classic. You don't review a collection of essays by the philosopher Donald Davidson and give them two stars, because those essays possess a centrality in the fields of the philosophy of language and philosophy of mind and philosophy of action that persists even if you think it the most disagreeable book ever written. You may find Jacques Lacan's ECRITS dense and unreadable (and many do, though, hint: read the seminars first; while the essays in ECRITS contain the same content condensed to the point of unintelligibility, the same themes lace the seminars in more accessible fashion). You may give Donna Haraway's collection of essays one or two stars, but all that does is make you look silly. It isn't quite a certification of idiocy, but it is a bit like soiling yourself in public.Donna Haraway's essays on women in science, on the status of science, on women's studies, and, perhaps most of all, her essays on Cyborgs do not simply exist within their fields. One of my fields of specialization is Cyborg Studies. If I were to produce an essay on the significance of Cyborgs in today's society - and I believe the Cyborg is perhaps the most important key to understanding the world into which humans now exist - it would look absolutely nothing like Haraway's. I am writing such an essay, and when it is published, I pray it gets one-one thousandth of the attention that Professor Haraway's essay on Cyborgs has gotten. But here is the main difference between my prospective essay and hers (apart fro the fact that mine is analytic and critical rather than programmatic - my reasons for wanting to write about Cyborgs is different from Haraway's reasons): mine would be a study within Cyborg Studies. Dr. Haraway's essay more or less created and largely constitutes the field of Cyborg Studies. Or put it this way. One sometimes hears the expression, "You can do philosophy with Kant or against Kant, but either way you must do philosophy through Kant." The same holds true with Donna Haraway on any of a number of subjects. If you want to talk or write about academic writing about Gender and Science, then you must encounter Donna Haraway. She is inescapable. And the same is true about Cyborg Studies. You do not rate a book by Donna Haraway like you would a Stephen King novel. You will never surpass her to the point where you will reach a point where you can dismiss her with a one or two star review. Even if you adore Donna Haraway's work, you will probably never enjoy her writing. She is needlessly obscure like most academic writers. Not everyone who writes on intellectual matters is a bad writer. Haraway is not as appalling as Homi Bhoba or Judith Butler (two atrociously awful writers), but worse than almost anyone else. But here is the thing: most bad writers aren't worth taking the time to understand; Haraway is. Why academic writing is so persistently bad is a matter not sufficiently discussed, but primarily people write badly because everyone else in their field writes badly. Most will make excuses saying that they have to write this way because the issues are so complex that they require a break from everyday language. That seems to carry weight when you are talking about, say, Wittgenstein, whose ideas really did represent a break with the common place. But a number of ultra heavyweight writers are marvelously clear writers. The philosopher J. L. Austin is one such writer, and by insisting on writing in everyday language, he stripped away the false sheen of depth that some writers acquire by writing so obliquely that people assume that they are deep. If you restate Derrida in everyday language, he becomes horrendously trite. Ditto Heidegger (though his neologism do allow a sort of shorthand for ideas that would have required a lot of commonplace words). Schopenhauer and David Hume wrote about enormously complex ideas. Anyway, this is a pet peeve of mine and as much as I respect and admire Haraway as a thinker, that is how little I think of her as a prose writer. A lot of this comes, I believe, from a disdain of everyday individuals. Immanuel Kant wrote in that hideous prose of his because Wolff and Thomasius employed the same kind of style, and they established the role models of German philosophers. So Fichte imitates Kant and so on through today. I love that historians generally don't feel the need to write badly, but there are a host of great role models within history. The first person who can generally be considered a modern historian is Gibbon, whose prose is frequently gorgeous. The same is true of Macaulay and a host of others. Some, like Simon Schama, are absolutely brilliant prose writers. For a example of someone who writes beautifully within the field of literary theory, look at Christian Thorne's THE DIALECTIC OF COUNTER-ENLIGHTENMENT. There are numerous passages in that work that are not only clear, but hysterically funny. How can you resist a book with a chapter that begins with the words, "There are two things you can count on a[n early modern] Hobbesean not to like: they are European civilization and space aliens; and we will have understood something important about Hobbes's political thought if we can figure out what the one has to do with the other." Or read in any book by the British literary critic John Carey. There are also bits that are hard to understand because she assumes that you and she shared a common set off issues, that you have read many of the same people and have a similar understanding of the surrounding academic controversies. She does not do the common reader any favors here. She assumes you are already a part of the club. She targets her essays at scholars within her fields and individuals who aspire to be scholars within the field. This bothers me, since I think the world is best serves by people targeting their writings at intelligent people in general (I am thinking of writers like Jane Jacobs and C. Wright Mills and Robert Darnton). I believe in a democracy of idea and while I don't blame people who write obscurely for the rise of Neoliberalism, I do think that they haven't helped matters by making their fields too obscure for the general reader. I don't recommend anyone read Haraway. She has chosen her target audience and I think that really only those in that audience are going to find reading her rewarding. I don't recommend her, but then, I don't recommend Heidegger or Julia Kristeva to nonspecialists. But Haraway's ideas are important. She may be needlessly convoluted in books like WHEN SPECIES MEET and THE COMPANION SPECIES MANIFESTO (both of which should and could have been general interest books), but the ideas are worth unpacking from all of the crud encasing them. I think the people giving this book one or two stars are confusing ideas with the way they are expressed. She is needlessly difficult, but that doesn't mean that she isn't also a brilliant thinker. Haraway is worth rereading, which is not something you can say about everyone. When I was first embarking on my study of Cyborgs, I made it a habit to read her Cyborg Manifesto at least once a week. Sometimes I would read through the whole thing carefully, a part of a sentence at a time; sometimes I would just read through the whole thing quickly. I've outlined the essay, made notes on the essay, and copied down important bits on 3x5 notecards. I have probably read that one essay 50 times. And I'll read it again. So find your own reason for reading Haraway. But please, if you are forced to read her because other people have their own reasons for wanting you to read her, don't do her and yourself a disservice by giving her books less than five stars. Low reviews say nothing about the worth of her books and just makes such reviewers look silly.

Donna Haraway's work in this collection continues to amaze me. Her intense critical engagement with the history of science is resolutely brilliant: she takes common conceptions of the body, objectivity, power, and 'nature' and pulls the rug of patriarchal metaphysics out from under them. These essays are concerned with unravelling origins myths, pointing out the pitfalls of political innocence, deconstructing our conceptions of the natural and the artefactual--you know, the usual. Her project is immense, but the she hones her points in each essay very well with dazzlingly astute political analyses and characteristic poetic phrases. If you're interested in oppositional antiracist feminist consciousness, Haraway's yr philosopher.

The writings in this book have influenced a lot of sci-fi stories. You can trace its theories on post-humanism through many much older literary sources. You can examine books such as: Frankenstein, Paradise Lost and Do androids dream of electric sheep? If you have no interest in studying interesting concepts of post-humanism and feminism or don't have much knowledge of either then this may not be for you. Post-human and feminist concepts are discussed in great length and detail. If you don't know the link between the two--it basically talks about an eventual kind of equality that transcends conventionally defined identity. If you still don't know what I'm talking about then I guess you either have to read more or just stop and turn around shamefully, just let it be. Oh and don't make bad reviews of books because you lack the knowledge or understanding required. One of the most interesting pieces in the book is Donna Harraway's Cyborg Manifesto. It continues to influence many writers, directors and scholars to come.

I need to preface this review by noting my biases: I am also a short, bald father employed by an NPR station who loves to run and who also loves the Boston Red Sox. So my affinity towards Mr. Sagal is a given. With that said: I really loved this book and would have loved it whether or not my affinity towards Mr. Sagal was an undercurrent in my thinking. As a runner, a father, a husband, a person who has questioned their lifestyle upon notice of love handles, a person who has gone through both triumphs and struggles, this book hits nearly every reason why I don't "go out for a jog," but call myself "a runner."Perhaps it's best to start with what this book IS NOT.It's not a Talmudic interpretation of Hanson's marathon training (although both the Talmud and marathon training come up in the book). It's not a self-help book on how to start running (although you'll be inspired to start running if you aren't a runner already). It's not a sojourn through Mr. Sagal's lifetime running accomplishments (although you do visit several periods of his life and he does note some of his accomplishments). It's not like any other running book I have ever read (and I've read quite a few). The best way I can describe the book is this: it's what I imagine it would be like if I bellied up to the bar with Pete (because it's a bar, I'd call him Pete and not Mr. Sagal, unless he insisted) and had a few beers while talking about life, running, fatherhood, marriage, heartbreak, struggles, and triumphs. There are funny parts (obviously), some great stories (especially his experience as a guide for blind runners at the '13 and '14 Boston Marathon), and some pretty profound moments. No offense to Mr. Sagal (notice we aren't at the bar in this situation, so I'm more formal), but I didn't think I'd have to read this book with a pencil for underlining purposes as I, perhaps naively, did not approach this book with the idea that there would be quotes or thoughts to which I would want to return. But there were many moments where I stopped to think about the profundity of a sentence or an observation or a quote.Every runner will feel a familiarity with some of the concepts, thoughts, and feelings about which Pete writes (I'm drinking a beer as I type this so I'm going back to the informal for this part). Every father, husband, mother, wife, sibling, aunt, or uncle will feel the same. The book not so much explores the life of a runner, but all of our lives: searching for meaning, for a goal, for security, for self-worth, for a life well lived.I highly recommend it for everyone.

This is an interesting book written by Peter Sagal ( host of NPRs “Wait, Wait ... Don’t Tell Me”). The book is about his running life with particular focus on the year of his divorce. The book varies between being funny, thoughtful, sad, insightful. It is an easy read ... part memoir, part running book.

If the key test of a running book is whether or not it makes you want to get outside and running again as soon as possible, then this book gets an A+. Also, Peter? Can I give you a hug?

I enjoyed the book, so much so that I started reading it a second time. There was a small portion that ran contrary to my personal beliefs, but i skipped over it. I enjoyed how Peter interwove his personal running experiences with events affecting running and how different people approach running. In particular, those for whom running poses additional challenges. Many have mentioned how much Peter's decaying marriage and subsequent divorce are mentioned in the book. I personally viewed it as a sad background story and sought to enjoy the merits of the book despite it. That aspect does seem to come to a happy ending.

Don’t be shortsighted or fooled by the (shoe) tongue-in-cheek cover. There’s so much more in this book than meets the eye. Sagal is nothing short of a marathoning mensch who goes long and strong on everything from his own discovery of running as a reluctant teenager, to his midlife rediscovery of it, to adolescent growing pains, family oddities (an oxymoron), how we see ourselves, meeting life’s difficult challenges, aging and, last but not least, truly caring about others, e.g., by always being there, looking out for, and “stepping up” for visually-impaired runners, among others. "Incomplete" in audio delivers the complete experience: Sagal’s familiar voice – smart, funny, and genuinely, likably humble – makes it a fully entertaining romp, and definitely a great run for your money…

From the title of the book (I am, of course, an owner of "The Complete Book of Running") to the anecdotal stories told in a self-effacing manor, this book was a joy to read. The author downplays his abilities as a runner. But as a repeat Boston Marathoner and runner of almost 40 years, I am impressed with his running and his perspective on running and yes, even life's ups and downs. Worth the read if you like a fun look at running and life in general.

This is a good book for anyone who also became a middle aged runner or is thinking of it. There are some great insights and anecdotes. I missed having a little more of the sense of humor Mr. Sagal provides on Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me, and I thought at times it was a little self indulgent but enjoyed it and would recommend it.

I would recommend this book to all runners, especially middle-aged, recently divorced men! A beautiful reminder of how this sport enhances all facets of our lives.

The Party of the First Part: The Curious World of Legalese, by Adam Freedman

From Publishers Weekly

Freedman, who translates legal jargon into English for an investment bank and writes the Legal Lingo column for the New York Law Journal, offers a cornucopia of hilarious, offbeat and downright bizarre examples of simple concepts contorted into words that defy understanding, often retaining centuries-old lingo like Further affiant sayeth naught (which means: this is the end of the affidavit). Freedman is as much reformer as humorist, and he ably demonstrates that legal documents can be written in understandable prose. He also skewers the contingent of lawyers and academics who resist such changes in the name of precision and lampoons flaws in the legal system, such as judges' refusal to explain instructions to jurors who are mystified by phrases such as Circumstantial evidence is evidence that, if found to be true, proves a fact from which an inference of the existence of another fact may be drawn. Occasionally the three-jokes-a-page approach is more cute than clever, but this lighthearted farrago of the follies of the law is sure to amuse and to convince readers that legal language can be made plain. “If you ever wanted to go to law school but thought it would be painful and dull, you were right. Fortunately, Adam Freedman's wit and insight will give you in an afternoon what you need to navigate a lawyered-up world—and more laughs than you'd find in class, too.”—Kermit Roosevelt, Professor, University of Pennsylvania Law School and author of In the Shadow of the Law "The Party of the First Part is a terrific achievement—a hugely entertaining book about a subject that is normally anything but.  Against all odds, it makes legal language come to life.  It's the kind of book I wish I'd read before law school, and the perfect read for non-lawyers who wonder what they're missing."—Jeremy Blachman, author of Anonymous Lawyer "A lighthearted but lucid explanation of legalese."—William Safire, The New York Times“A gem of a book: bright, lucid, and compelling. I found myself laughing out loud, and wondering why lawyers can’t just eat their torts and go home.”—Cameron Stracher, author of Double Billing and publisher of the New York Law School Law Review

"The Party of the First Part" is an erudite, hilarious tour through 21st Century American legalese. Alan Freedman leads us through the ankle-grabbing underbrush of redundancy, dead phrases, faux Latin, and mindless obfuscation into which every reader - and writer - of legal documents eventually must stagger.Freedman is a sure-footed guide who knows the territory. Time and again, he yanks up a hoary word or phrase and shows us its tangled roots.Sometimes we find, clutching a root with a deathgrip, an advocate of the so-called "Precision School" of legal drafting. These lawyers and profs fear that awful chaos would result if lawyers quit using ancient Anglo/French/Latin phrases, in favor of words used by 21st Century Americans in everyday life. Chaos? Well gosh, people might have to *sue* if they can't agree what a word or phrase written in 21st Century English means. Uh-huh, thinks I: as if they aren't already suing by the thousands over the meaning of Roman-numeraled legal documents bristling with boilerplate clunkers such as "witnesseth," "hereinabove," "aforementioned," "covenant and agree," and "hereunto."This book should be required reading for every law student, law professor, judge and lawyer in the United States. It encourages those among us who want to write clearly when drafting legal documents. I hope it will at least give pause for thought to our colleagues who never met a hundred-word clause in the passive voice, that they didn't like.

A slim volume, packed with interest. The chapter on Wills, Wives and Wrecks is worth the price of admission. Are you sure that your will can pass the Fertile Octogenarian Rule?Adam Freedman has assembled a menagerie of legal expressions, many dating back to Norman French, with very specific meanings forged in thousands of judge's decisions. It's tempting to scorn legalese as a way for lawyers to obscure what they're up to, but the truth is that careful use of legal terms is a vital part of our justice system. This book is well indexed if you just need to consult it in a pinch, but it's so entertaining that you'll want to read every word. The Party of the First Part: The Curious World of Legalese

Funny and informative, read through it pretty quickly.

This book is an easy read. Not only is the book written in a plain style, but also it is formatted well, which makes for a breezy read. Aside from its easiness, almost every word in the book tells. A major accomplishment indeed.

Loved this book because it shows you how to get your point across in a legal form of writing using the least amount of words

This book is a funny and expansive look at the origin of legal terms and obscure laws, ranging. Although a fun read, the book seemed to lack focus. At times, it read as an advocacy piece encouraging the legal community to abandon traditional legalese, supported by what is inexplicably called "The Precision School", in favor of simple and widely accessible plain English, supported the "The Plain English School." At other times, the agenda seemed to be purely entertaining or educational. Perhaps all three. My reaction to this book varied as I was reading it. Parts are laugh-out-loud funny. The author's treatment of sex laws and laws regulating sales of sex toys is as entertaining as any stand-up comedian`s monologue. For example, in describing an Alabama court's 2004 decision that "ordinary vibrators" not designed primarily for genital stimulation are not impermissible sex toys, the author notes that this leaves the door wide open for the "sale of vibrators designed primarily for making cappuccino." He notes that North Dakota's sodomy laws specifically prohibit copulation with a bird, and catalogues the various (and often humorous) terms used to describe impermissible sex acts in throughout the US.Alternately, sections of the book are a little tedious, with broad-brush descriptions of term after legal term. The author is quite witty, but occasionally the wit teeters on the edge of sarcasm and sophomoric humor. Throughout the book, he uses little snippets of created dialogue that show the humor of a particular usage in a particular setting. Some are funnier than other. There is much to be learned here. The author tells the stories of the origins of negligence-based tort liability (an engineer named MacAdam, who developed a system for paving), He draws from ages-old legal cases from the US and UK, and isn`t afraid the identify the judge or court responsible..WHAT I LIKED: Overall the book is funny, full of information, seemingly well-researched, and nicely indexed. I read a lot and often don't notice, or am critical of the font and presentation. The presentation is also very visually appealing. The font, page layout, and paper quality are nice.WHAT I DIDN'T: Occasionally tedious, references are not citedOverall, I would recommend this book to collectors of legal trivia or anyone interested in understanding legalese or learning about the origin of legal terms.

Mr. Freedman's "The Party of the First Part" is a much more humorous review of Law School. Freedman covers Torts, Contracts, Criminal Law, Wills, Trusts, Estates and a multitude of other subjects that can even confuse some of the most academically gifted among us. I for one spent Law School in a haze because I felt like I was not getting the big picture. However, when I realized that the `law' does not have a big picture, I felt much more relaxed. Our Anglo-Saxon, Franco-Norman, Old English influenced law, as Mr. Freedman demonstrates, is a series of compromises and half-measures and it has always been that way. `Legalese' can be used as both a sword and a shield. For instance, Wills can be written in a way that makes sense to people, without any mention of the words "rest" "residue" or "remainder." But since these sounds good and lawyerly, it keeps showing up in Wills and Testaments. (Testament also being a redundancy too as Mr. Freedman demonstrates.) Thus, the odds of challenging a plain English Will and winning is much greater then one that packs more and more legalese in. Since legalese protects not only the lawyer and the client, legalese can also be used as a sword. For instance, why hire a lawyer if you could understand the documents that you are reading and signing? I encourage anyone to read this book to get a humorous side to a very dry topic.

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Ceremony: Choosing the Perfect Words and Officiating Your Unforgettable Day

Review

Foreward Clarion Review    Rating: 5 out of 5This is a comprehensive resource for anyone planning a wedding who doesn't want to leave the details of this joyous event up to their officiant. The DIY movement hits the traditional wedding ceremony and changes things up in many artful and satisfying new ways in the revised edition of Dayna Reid's Do-it-Yourself Wedding Ceremony: Choosing the Perfect Words and Officiating Your Unforgettable Day. The author is a minister and has officiated at weddings for fourteen years; this experience with many different cultural and religious traditions gives authority to her suggestions for different readings, music selections, and other components so couples can tailor a celebration that most meaningfully expresses their interests and beliefs.Reid outlines potential elements that might be included in a marriage ceremony, from the procession to the recession, and delves into deeper examination of each so that couples can create a truly personalized event. It is empowering to have all the tools and templates needed to craft a celebration of the marriage union whether it is a spiritual or nonspiritual ceremony, a first wedding, a renewal of vows, or a ceremony uniting a blended family. The book describes wedding elements from many cultures, such as the Hawaiian exchange of leis, the African American tradition of jumping the broom, and examples from Jewish, Christian, Zen Buddhist, and Celtic wedding ceremonies. Couples can read about ways to involve children in the event, honor their parents, and recognize loved ones who are deceased or unable to attend their wedding. There is a chapter full of sample ceremonies and Reid even discusses how to become ordained or become a marriage officiant, in case a pair wants to have someone special in their lives perform a custom ceremony. Some of the examples of readings, prayers, and quotes will be familiar to wedding veterans, such as quotes from the Bible and Kahlil Gibran, but others are derived from a bouquet of surprising and unusual sources, such as Robert A. Heinlein, Armenian blessings, the Star Wars movies, classic children's books, and popular song lyrics. It would be fun to attend a wedding where the bride or groom recites a scene from the film Sideways, quotes a Beatles lyric, or murmurs the paean to love by an Ent and his Entwife from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Two Towers. It's easy to imagine how this book might look after a wedding couple got through with it: spine bent, replete with pages that are dogeared, stained, underlined, and packed with a rainbow of curly edged sticky notes. This is a comprehensive resource for anyone who is planning a wedding and doesn't want to leave the details of this joyous event up to their officiant. Others will welcome a book that outlines how to create a wedding ceremony that honors a couple coming from different cultures or beliefs. Whatever their background, Reid's book is a great reference for couples who want to devote as much attention to the significance of their vows as the selection of their wedding feast entrée or flower arrangements.

With two days to prep with my son and his fiancée, we put together a meaningful and satisfying very small wedding. I officiated. Not exaggerating: I could not have done it without this book. Now that I have done one, I feel well prepared to officiate for just about anyone. The book has many samples of ceremonies, a variety of texts suitable for religious (primarily Christian) couples and others for nonreligious couples, some pop culture quotes, and practical suggestions. We used bits and pieces of all that material plus original texts and some ideas from our families' traditions and came up with something unique that reflected their personalities, values, and interests. Great investment! Four stars is only because I think with more editing the organization of the book could have been tighter and easier to use. But it is easy to use, don't get me wrong!

Whether you are religious, spiritual or indifferent, or whether you are a heterosexual or same-sex couple (which we are) this book is a wonderfully helpful place to start to create your wedding ceremony. We read through the book, (Kindle Version) highlighted the verses/blessings/sayings that we liked, then we took everything that we liked and printed them on to index cards by section of the ceremony and then narrowed it down again to the ones that we really liked and then we edited the verses even further to our own liking and to something that was really fitting for us as a couple. Here is a hot tip: I ended up buying a second version of this book on iBooks because you can email yourself all the highlighted entries though iBooks and then I just copied and pasted all the sections we like into MS Word (or similar) and then printed everything thing on to index cards.

This was one of the books I purchased to help make script writing easier for me as an officiant. It offers step-by-step instructions, practical guidance for a variety of ceremonies (ranging spiritual to secular), and has many wonderful quote suggestions. The couple was able to thumb through this book and pick their favorite of each script component, which simplified the process tremendously, and made it less stressful for everyone involved. I would recommend it, and know I will be returning to for future weddings.

I'm acting as the officiant for a friends wedding and this book is very easy to use for planning purposes. Not only does it help with all the different segments of the ceremony, it provides sample vows, etc. It is helpful both for people planning a religious service or people who are planning a secular service. If you are wanting a very traditional and/or conservative Christian ceremony, this book will still be helpful but more for process than variations on vows. The book skews towards a less traditional outlook, which is fine by me. I just thought I would point this out for those who might be looking for something conservative.

Through all the hub-bub of trying to pull together my wedding, and make it memorable and beautiful, I was really struggling. A friend told me about Dayna Reid and her new Do It Yourself Ceremony book, and WOW, what a difference! The book is so easy to understand and the way she itemizes all the different aspects of the wedding process, I don't know if I would have been able to really pull it off had it now been for this book. IT IS AMAZING!!! I highly recommend this book for brides to be everywhere, whether you are getting married this year, or its not even for a few years... it is great tool to put your own signature and flair on what should be THE most important day of your life!! I am going to be buying a bunch of them as gifts for some of my single friends as well as the ones that are planning to take the plunge soon. AWESOME AWESOME !!! 5 Stars!!!

I conducted a ceremony for the first time last month (June 2015), and this provided to be an invaluable aid. I had initially wanted to write a wedding ceremony from scratch, but it was daunting to create it whole cloth. Not only did this book lay out traditional and non-traditional wedding ceremony formats and actions, but it also provided multiple examples of text and quotes to use for religious, spiritual, and secular ceremonies. So, while I still created a unique and personalized experience for the wedding party, using this for ideas and inspirations relaxed me and allowed my creativity to flow. It destroyed the "power of the white."Whether you are yourself an officiant or are planning a wedding, I can't recommend this more highly. My officiating was a resounding success, by the way.

I've found this to be a great resource for building our non-religious ceremony. Lots of different options to choose from and the book is well organized.I'd suggest sitting down with your fiance and reading through it together. It might seem like a lot, and you might have to break the whole thing into multiple sessions, but I feel like its worth the time. Use a pen, underline the sections you like and come back through later to make the final decisions.

This wonderful little book has everything you need to know about writing a ceremony script that wows...plus more. I highly recommend this book for the new and not so new officiant.
